Major Plot Point: Jack’s Fixation on the Pig
• Jack develops an obsession with a pig on the island
• He justifies his obsession, by saying it will provide us with food
• His true intentions are to murder the Pig for power, and status.
• Civilization vs. Savagery
• “If Jack was chief he’d have all hunting and no fire. We’d be
here till we died” (Golding 93)
Major Plot Point: Ralph’s Struggle with Power
• Ralph realizes that people are not taking their situation seriously
• Ralph is engulfed with the stress of being leader
• After giving commands, and consistently being ignored, Ralph
considers stepping down from power
• “We nearly set the whole island on fire. And we waste time,
rolling rocks, and making little cooking fires. Now I say this and
make it a rule, because I’m chief: We won’t have a fire
anywhere but on the mountain. Ever.” (Golding 81)
Major Plot Point: Tension Between Piggy and Jack
• As Jack becomes more barbaric, the animosity between him and
Piggy begin to build
• Piggy gives precedence to order, while Jack prefers anarchy
• Piggy lacks physical appearance while Jack does not
Major Plot Point: Tension between Jack and Ralph
• Both Jack and Ralph have respect from others, as well as
physical appearance
• Jack still has resentment towards Ralph, because he became
Chief
• Jack feels he is obligated to beat Ralph
• Ralph believes Jack is patronizing him, because he never
completes a given task correctly
Significance of the Conch
• The Conch represents order and status
• When Piggy uses the Conch, he is not taken seriously because
his physical appearance.
• Jack refusal to use the conch when speaking, demonstrates
disorder and need for anarchy.
Significance of the Beastie
• The beastie represents the evil that exists between all human
beings
• The belief in the beastie becomes more credible as the boys drift
deeper into savagery
• The belief in the beastie becomes stronger as time proceeds and
is constantly brought up during the meetings by littluns
• The Beastie leads to discord and throws the group off
Freudian Psychology Theory
• The idea that personalities are made of three interacting parts: Id, Ego,
and Superego
Id: Jack
• “Bollocks to the rules! We’re strong—we hunt! If there’s a beast, we’ll
hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat—!” (Golding 91)
• Impulsive
• Unorganized
• Selfish
Ego: Ralph
“…‘all this I meant to say. Now I’ve said it. You voted me for chief.
Now you do what I say.’ They quieted, slowly, and at last were
seated again. Ralph dropped down and spoke in his ordinary
voice.” (Golding 81)
• Keeps everyone civilized
• Restrains from animalistic behavior
Superego: Piggy
“I got the conch! Ralph, they ought to shut up, oughtn’t they? You
shut up, you littluns!” (Golding 83)
• Obsessed with morality
• Has to do everything the correct way
• Strives to achieve the ideal solution to problems
