We believe hope for children in foster care begins with the simple
thread of connection. Together, we can help Oklahoma children living
in foster care find the sense of belonging most of us take for granted.
letter from the director
Over the last year, Citizens Caring for Children has provided more
than 4,800 children in foster care with everything from their first
pair of new shoes to play in to a teddy bear to hold onto at night. We
are working to build a brighter future for these children every day.
What a year! Citizens Caring for Children (CCC) was incredibly blessed over
the last year. We continue to experience enormous growth, even breaking our
own records. It all started with the Resource Center, where over the course of
the fiscal year, more than 3,502 children were provided with 37,819 articles of
clothing and 578 duffel bags filled with toiletries and linens. In addition, more
than 817 children were paired with a personal shopper to pick out the perfect
first day of school outfit, a backpack and all of the school supplies they needed
through the Back- to-School program.
We also experienced enormous growth in the mentor program. More than
eighteen adults signed up to be new mentors to a child in need bringing our
program to 56 matches. When a child is placed in foster care, they often have
to change school systems, live with people they may not know and interact
with an inconsistent stream of people working in the child welfare system
including social workers, counselors, judges, foster families or staff working
at a shelter or group home. This inconsistency impacts all facets of their lives.
Our mentor program strives to match a child with a mentor who can provide
stability and be a lifelong connection.

Finally, the momentum of growth was topped off by our “Joy 4 Kids program.”
Youth in the child welfare system move as often as three times per year,
and they often wonder if Santa will know where to find them on Christmas
morning. “Joy 4 Kids” ensures that these children are able to experience the
spirit of Christmas that every child deserves. KFOR’s “In Your Corner” team
stepped up, once again, and partnered with CCC to provide gifts for more
than 1,000 children. In addition, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard, Russell
Westbrook, attended our annual Christmas party and provided 80 children
with a new backpack, t-shirt and Jordan tennis shoes courtesy of his “WHY
NOT? Foundation”!
We are incredibly grateful that we have been able to grow our outreach and
serve more children than ever. However, in just the last fiscal year, more than
1,100 children entered the Oklahoma child welfare system. There is still more
that must be accomplished. If you know a potential mentor, volunteer or donor
who is devoted to the well-being of Oklahoma’s most vulnerable children,
please take a moment to tell them about our mission. Invite them to tour our
facility to see firsthand how we are all working together to plant the seeds for
a brighter future for these children each day.

resource center
Children in foster care are often removed from their homes with nothing
but the clothing on their backs. The Resource Center and “It’s in the Bag”
programs help alleviate this sense of loss by providing NEW clothing, shoes,
socks, undergarments, pajamas, books, coats and a duffel bag filled with
toiletry items and linens to children up to four times per year. By meeting
basic needs Citizens Caring for Children aims to build self-confidence among
some of Oklahoma’s most neglected children.
Needs in the Resource Center are ongoing and range from sorting clothing
and shopping with foster families to hosting a drive for clothing and/or
toiletry items.

back-to-school
On average, a child in foster care moves at least three times within their first
year. This can make going back to school a scary time. Citizens Caring for
Children’s “Back-to-School” program pairs children and young adults in foster
care with a personal shopper to pick out the perfect back-to-school outfit and
school supplies. Each child receives one new outfit, a new pair of shoes, new
socks, new underwear and a backpack filled with school supplies.
We invite you, your organization, company or church group to host a drive for
school supplies or volunteer as a personal shopper for “Back-to-School”!

“Joy 4 Kids” provides presents to children in foster care during the holidays,
allowing them to experience the spirit of Christmas. As these children move
from home to home they often wonder if Santa will know where to find them.
Through “Joy 4 Kids,” Santa manages to warm the hearts of more than 1,000
children in foster care each Christmas.
We rely solely on community support to fulfill wish list requests and welcome
you, your organization, company or church group to help by adopting a
wish list, holding a toy drive or donating the cost of fulfilling a wish list this
holiday season.

mentor program
Once a child is placed into the custody of the Department of Human Services
(DHS) their support system fluctuates frequently. In order to provide lasting
relationships the Mentor Program matches a child in foster care with a mentor
who serves as a constant, positive role model and friend. The Mentor Program
is a key component in planting the seeds for a brighter future, working oneon-one to change behaviors and providing these children with a life they might
otherwise not have known.
As the number of children in DHS custody continues to rise so does the need
for mentors. The rewarding experience of mentoring a child can be summed
up with the following quote from a CCC mentor:
“My Mentee seems to be doing really well with our time together.
Our rapport together is stronger and stronger with each of our
visits. I enjoy our time together; assuredly it’s always one of the
brightest spots of my week.”

Think about your childhood. You likely recall a favorite toy, watching cartoons
or playing with friends. Now imagine a police officer who comes to your house,
puts you in his car and takes you to a shelter. Everything you knew and loved
is left behind. This is the experience of more than 11,000 Oklahoma children
currently in foster care. For many, their formative years are dominated by
feelings of fear, neglect, uncertainty and loss. Citizens Caring for Children
focuses on four programs to provide hope, change lives and create healthy
futures for some of Oklahoma’s most vulnerable children.
