En las Punas En las Punas is a children’s story written by the “Centro de Documentación en Información de Literatura Infantil." Through the story, the students will visualize the way of living for a family in the “Punas”, the cold, Andean regions of Peru. The story depicts family life, shared work, a love for animals, frugal foods, and the beauty of nature within the context of the Andean culture. The students will predict, paraphrase, analyze vocabulary and grammar, answer questions about the story, compare and contrast the lives of the people of the sierra and their own as well as write their own story. The teacher will set the time for the lesson, two days or more depending on vocabulary. Pre-listening and pre-reading: θ Play some Andean music. You can choose to teach more about music and the instruments of the Incas, and even study the Incas. But for the context of this lesson, if the students ask about the music, tell them you are setting the mood for a story (music from the general source for the web site) θ Show a map of Peru and the Puna region (southern Andean). It’s an “altiplano” 3500 to 4000 meters. The climate is cold and dry, and there is a lack of oxygen. However, during the summers (December through March) it does rain frequently. There are extreme changes in temperature. The nights can be intensely cold and the days can be warm. There are extensive plains flanked by glaciers (graciares y nevados) with peaks of more than 6000 meters. Here are the crystal blue lakes that are the origins of the rivers that water the deserts of Peru. Few species of animals and plants have adapted to the extreme temperatures. Humans who live there live the way they have lived for hundreds of years. (Check the National Geographic, and Videos of Peru). θ Teach “Asserín, Asserán, los maderos de San Juan” Explain that this is a rhyme from Spain that is repeated to children in all parts of the Spanish-speaking world. The father in the story we are going to hear today repeats this same rhyme to his baby. Be sure students have a copy of the rhyme for their notebooks. Present new vocabulary: Prepare props for the vocabulary. Try to stay all in Spanish. Put samples of the foods in baggies. Go over with the class. Have students write the vocabulary in their notebooks. Vocabulary: Foods: charqui = dried meat of llama; fideos, tallarines = noodles (very cheap and staple for the poor); morón = type of corn; choclo = ear of corn; cancha = roasted kernels of corn; bizcocho = sweet muffins frequently made of cornmeal; chu?o = dried potatoes that they prepare in the high Andes; ají = chili pepper (picture is in the cooking section); fiambres = cold cuts Clothing: chullo = cap; chalina = scarf; manta or poncho = cape; Miscellaneous: grass used for making roofs and also used as food for llamas = ichu; atado, bulto = pack Listening Activities: Show the pictures to the students, and tell an abbreviated version of the story. See below suggestions for each page. Again, students should write new words as they come up during the following discussion of the pictures. You might want to use TPR activities to teach new vocabulary words. Cover: ¿Qué ven uds. en este dibujo el papa, su hijo, el perrito, y las llamas; la sierra or los nevados; (Note: los nevados only refers to the snow covered peaks) Las llamas pastan y el papá las cuida. ¿A qué refieren “las punas”? (las punas refers to the highest part) Page 1:¿Qué pasa en este dibujo? ¿Cómo es la casa? ¿Qué tiempo hace? Nuevo vocabulario: soplar , arrear, cargar, comestibles Page 2: ¿Qué pasa? ¿Quiénes salen de la casa? ¿Qué hacen? ¿Tiene algo el papá para su hijo? ¿Cuál será? Nuevo vocabulario: abrazar, fideos, azúcar, harina, bizcochitos. Have the students brainstorm what the story might be about and put their ideas on the board. (Let students guess as to the contents of the atado.) Page 6. ¿Qué dice la mamá al padre y al ni o? ¿Cómo se llama el ni o? ¿Cuándo van a regresar a casa? Nuevo vocabulario: despedir Page 7. Ademas de las llamas, ¿qué otros animales van a pastar? ¿Cuál animal le ayuda al papá con los animales? ¿Qué hace la mamá después de que el papá y su hijo salen? ¿Qué hace su bebé? Nuevo vocabulario: hilar, tejer Students speculate as to what a mother’s jobs might be here in the sierra and also what a father’s jobs might be. (The name of the flower on the plant next to the house is the national flower of Peru, the catuta. Listening Activity: Read the story to the students. Have them get in a circle around you and tell them the story about Nicolas and his family. Have the pictures on the wall. You can tell it more than once or twice, and you may want to ask questions during or after telling the story. You don’t have to read it exactly as it is written. You can change it to present tense if you prefer. You can have students act it out. You could also do it with puppets. Reading and Guided Interaction: Give the students copies of the actual story to read. On each page have students write what happened. If your students are not able to do this without help you may give the following exercise. However, it would be a more challenging and realistic activity to have them do this without the guide below. You may need to review the preterite and imperfect before they attempt this activity. (See activity sheet 1) After students complete the activity sheet with the preterite and imperfect. Teacher retells the story using the preterite and imperfect so that students can hear the verb forms used in context. Speaking Activity: Review the new vocabulary words and cultural information presented in the story. With the pictures on the board, tell the story again using what the students have written. Then put the students in pairs or groups of four, and pass out a set of pictures to each group. Have them practice retelling the story until they are ready to present their stories to the class. Have one group volunteer to tell the story to the class. Personalization: Part 1: Students compare their lives to the lives of the family in the story, En las punas. (Use Student Activity Sheet II) To summarize this activity, make a Venn diagram on the board to compare students lives and those of the characters in the story. Part II: Using the above information, write a very short story about your own family that contains the following information: Someone returns home from a trip or from work, the family eats a meal then someone leaves the house along with another member of the family to do something else, and the rest of the family does typical chores. (Use the questions on the activity sheet as a guide.) EN LAS PUNAS Centro de Documentación e Información de Literatura Infantil (el ** se refiere a la página del libro) **1.
