Quote of the Day Cocos (Keeling) Islands News (cont’d) Berita Pulu Cocos (Keeling) (seterusnya) ‘The best way to succeed in life is
to act on the advice we give to
others.’ ~ Author Unknown
Thought for the Day ‘We become what we criticize’ Capt. Ronald Cobley
Jokes of the Week Boss’s Headache
My daughter came home from
school one day complaining
of stomach pains. I told her maybe
its empty, so put something in it.
Later that evening my boss came
by to pick something up and
complained about having a
headache.
My daughter was standing there
and told him, “that’s because its
empty, try putting something in it.”
Feedback Wanted
The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the Cocos
Islands CRC are organisations that are passionate about
the environment. We are currently looking at ways of
reducing the use of paper and printer consumables.
Funny Doc
A man walks into the doctors office
and hands him a note that says, “I
cant talk!!!”
“No problem” says the doctor. “Put
your toe on this chair.”
The doctor picks up a paper weight
and drops it on the mans toe.
We are seeking your feedback on the possibility of
receiving your copy of The Atoll electronically in the
future.
“AAAAAAAA!!!” the man yells.
“Great,” says the doctor. “make
sure you come back tomorrow, and
we’ll work on B.”
Apple Tree Joke
There was a farmer who planted
apples. He was disturbed by some
local kids who would sneak into his
farm at night and eat the apples. He
came up with a clever idea that he
thought would scare the kids away
for sure. He made up a sign and
posted it in the field.
The next day the kids showed up
and they saw a sign hanging that
read,
“Warning!! One of the apples
on these trees has been injected
with cyanide.” So the kids ran off,
made up their own sign and posted
it next to the sign that the farmer
made.
For those without access to an email address, The Atoll
would be made available for purchase from either the
Shire or CRC.
Please email or phone your comments through to either
the CRC or the Shire Office.
Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.
The farmer showed up the following
week. He looked over the field and
he noticed that no apples were
missing, but a new sign hung next
to his. He drove up to the sign and
read: “Now there are two!!!”.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands News (cont’d) Berita Pulu Cocos (Keeling) (seterusnya) At my recent visit to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands I noticed that a number of spa pools did not comply with the Building Regulations 2012.
The Health (Aquatic Facilities) Regulations 2007 under its term of reference states the following:
“(1) WATER BODY
Means a spa pool, swimming pool, swimming bath, water slide, wave pool
and any other aquatic amenity or facility that is controlled or used by or in
connection with any club, school, business, association or body corporate.”
Fencing of pools is covered by the Building Regulations 2012 and in Part 8
Division 2 Private Swimming Pools, Regulation 50 Enclosure of Private
Swimming Pools.”
“Regulation - 50 Enclosure of private swimming pools

Failure to comply with this regulation has a penalty of $5000.

For the purposes of sub-regulation (1), the immediate surrounds of a private swimming pool that is at the rear of premises may include
any part of the rear portion of that premises.

(a) It consists of a fence, wall, gate or other barrier, or a combination of them; and
(b) Any fence, wall, gate or other barrier included in the enclosure is in accordance with –

The requirements of AS 1926.1; or
(ii)
Approved alternative requirements;
And
(c) Any wall comprising the enclosure has no means of access through a building other than –

A window that is in accordance with the requirements of 1926.1; or
(ii)
An approved door.

clauses 2.3, 2.6 and 2.7 of AS 1926.1 if all those requirements are satisfied in relation to either side of the fence.”
All owners or occupiers of premises on Cocos Island must comply with the above, on my next trip to Cocos (Keeling) Islands I will be checking
on all spas and pools on the islands and if any are found not to comply with the above then I will under the Acts and Regulations above be
issuing work orders requiring the work to be carried out.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands News (cont’d) Milkfish (Chanoschanos) occur in the Indo-Pacific region,

Milkfish are a silvery coloured fish distinguished by a

Milkfish migrate on a regular basis for reproductive
reasons. The young fry live at sea for two-three weeks
and then migrate to protected areas (such as the lagoon
at Cocos (Keeling) Islands), and then return to sea to
mature sexually and reproduce.
Spawning is often correlated with the new or full moon
phases and takes place mostly at night during the warmer
months of the year. During spawning, fish show increased
swimming activity and exhibit chasing, occasional leaping,
and waterslapping behaviour.
Milkfish are a very popular eating fish in Southeast Asia,
the Philippines and Indonesia where these fish have been
farmed for centuries. They are found at both the Cocos
(Keeling) Islands and at Christmas Island.

Public Notices (cont’d) Notis‐notis Umum (seterusnya) Restraining orders law I – Violence restraining orders and police orders
These are short articles about legal issues that may interest you. They are not legal advice. You should always obtain individual legal advice
for your situation.
A restraining order is an order from the Magistrates Court or Children’s Court to stop someone behaving in certain ways towards you. There
are three types of restraining order. This article is about violence restraining orders and police orders. The next article will be about misconduct
restraining orders and breaching (breaking) a restraining order.
All types of restraining order usually stop a person from communicating with you in any way (eg speaking to you in the street, telephoning you,
sending you letters, emails or text messages, or contacting you by social media), or coming near you, or coming near where you live or work.
A restraining order cannot be made against a child under 10 years of age.
Breaching a restraining order is a criminal offence. We will deal with that in the next article.
Violence restraining orders
Violence restraining orders are to stop family and domestic violence against you or violence against you by a person with whom you are not in
a family and domestic relationship.
Family and domestic violence is where you are, or were before, in a family and domestic relationship (eg present or former spouse or de facto
spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, child or other family member, flatmate) with someone.
Family and domestic violence includes assaulting you, depriving you of your liberty (eg stopping you leaving the house), kidnapping you,
damaging your property (including hurting or killing your pets), ongoing intimidating, offensive or emotionally abusive behaviour (eg swearing
at you, calling you ugly names, shouting), stalking you, or threatening to assault you, or damage your property, or threatening to kidnap you or
deprive you of your liberty.
You can apply for a violence restraining order against someone that you are not in a family and domestic relationship with if that person is
assaulting you, depriving you of your liberty, kidnapping you, stalking you, or threatening to assault you, or threatening to kidnap you or
deprive you of your liberty.
You can apply for a restraining order through the Magistrates Court (or if the person you want one against is a young person under 18 years of
age, the Children’s Court). If it is urgent, you can apply for an “interim” order first.
The person that you are applying for an order against has the right to object to you having a final order. If there is an objection, your application
will eventually go to a trial (a hearing). This is where the Magistrate will decide whether you can have a final violence restraining order after
hearing all the evidence.
A final violence restraining order is usually for 2 years against an adult. A violence restraining order against a child cannot be for more than 6
months, except where one is made against a child in criminal proceedings against the child.
Violence restraining orders for children
You can apply for your violence restraining order to cover your child if:
 there has been family and domestic violence against them, or
 they have been exposed to family and domestic violence (this means your child has seen or heard domestic violence or seen injuries on you or
 there has been violence towards them or the sort of behaviour set out above by someone that the child is not in a family and domestic
relationship with.
If you are applying for a violence restraining order for your child against another child, the application must be made in the Children’s Court.
Police orders
Police can make an “on the spot” violence restraining order, which is called a police order. A police order can be made where the situation is very
urgent or it is not practical for you to apply to a Magistrates Court immediately for an interim violence restraining order (eg it is out of Court hours or
you are somewhere where you cannot immediately apply to the Court).
Police orders are to stop family and domestic violence only. They can be made for adults or children. They cannot be made in a situation where the
people are not in a family and domestic relationship with each other.
They are for 72 hours or can be for such lesser time as the police officer thinks is needed to allow you to apply to the Court for an interim violence
restraining order. The idea of them is to protect you until you can get to a Court to apply for an interim violence restraining order.
If you think that you need a violence restraining order against someone, seek legal advice, but if it is urgent contact the Police, or contact the
Magistrates Court or Children’s Court to immediately apply.

Cocos Snippets Keping‐kepingan Cocos Healthy Living Tips Avoiding and Treating Muscle
Strains
Do the warm-ups
You can’t expect your body to
immediately kick into action when
you want to do a workout, or play a
team or other sport. Bodies don’t
work that way, even if you have a
good level of fitness.
Your sport or workout should
always begin with a warm-up. You
are preparing your muscles for
much harder work, so warming up
gets your heart rate increased
gradually and loosens the muscles
and joints. Simple warm-up
exercises include riding an exercise
bike – start slowly and then build up
to where you are comfortable with
the physical work -– or doing some
simple jogging in place, for up to 10
minutes.
Do the cool-down
You’ve done the work – and we’ll
get to that work shortly – but then
you need to cool down. Your heart
rate after exercise will be
accelerated so you need to bring it
back to normal. Walk for a while to
wind down. Try a few stretches,
both before and after your main
exercise.
Avoid muscle damage
It’s so easy to think you can push
your limits but you really need to
think your exercise and sporting
regime through. It’s especially
important to work out a good
regime when you are older and
perhaps need more time to develop
your fitness levels.
There are now very helpful
products that can assist with this.
Take compression shirts for
example; there have been
many positive reviews of the
compression shirt . These can
make a significant difference in
relieving muscle and joint soreness
throughout the day and night, and
the soft fabrics used give you
maximum comfort and mobility.
Treating a strain
If you’re unlucky enough to get a
muscle strain then take it seriously
or it could get worse.
Protect the injured area. Rest the
injured muscle until it feels right.
There’s no harm in checking with a
doctor for treatment.
Listen to your body
Sometimes you think that you are
invincible and that your body will fit
in with what you think and do. It
won’t. Be realistic as to your
exercise goals, take care of your
body and enjoy whatever sport you
want to be involved in. Just
remember, you only have the one
body, so look after it.

Crossword Sudoku Station How do I do it?
The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and group of squares
enclosed by the bold lines must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once.
The rules for different size and shape puzzles are pretty much identical. The different size puzzles simply require a different
set of numbers.
