Part I
A. Ozymandias\ Percy Bysshe Shelley
1) 1. He met a person who had seen the statue of Ozymandias.
2) a. Two large legs.
b. A broken face.
3) We can learn that Ozymandias was a cruel and arrogant man who was
used to commanding people and saw his subject as inferior to him. The
statue's face has a sneer which is a sign of disrespect to people.
4) a. TK I chose: comparing and contrasting
The quote is surprising because Ozymandias had a huge kingdom and was
sure it would last forever but in the present nothing is left of his kingdom
except for the broken statue.
b. I chose this TK because I compared between how Ozymandias'
kingdom looked in his time to how it looks now.
5) a. When Ozymandias lived he had a large kingdom and he was sure that
people will look at it in the future and be impressed with how powerful he
was. Instead, all that remains of his kingdom is the desert and broken
statue.
b. The idea described in the last lines is that all great kings and
kingdoms will decay and fall. The main idea of the poem is that people and
their memory do not last forever and that they shouldn’t be so proud.

B. A Summer's Reading\ Bernard Malamud
6) 2. He spent most of his days doing nothing.
7) a. He wanted to have a good job.
b. He wanted people to respect him.
8) George wanted Mr. Cattanzara's respect because he looked up to him
and liked him. Mr. Cattanzara is shown to be one of the smartest people in
the neighborhood (he reads the New York Times) so George wanted to
impress him.
9) a. TK I chose: Explaining patterns.
Mr. Cattanzara sees George as a younger version of himself. Mr.
Cattanzara is a smart man who didn’t get an education and that caused
him to have an unhappy life. Mr. Cattanzara wants George to use his
potential and make a change in his life.
b. I chose this TK because I showed how Mr. Cattanzara doesn’t want
George to repeat the same mistakes he made in life.
10) a. George was ashamed to leave his room because he thought that Mr.
Cattanzara told everyone in the neighborhood that he lied about reading
the books and that they no longer respect him.
b. This behavior is typical of George because he prefers to avoid things
rather than to deal with them. He dropped out of school because he felt
the teachers didn’t respect him and he left every job he took.

Part II
C. All My Sons\ Arthur Miller
11) 3. They shouldn’t have let her believe Larry is alive.
12) This conversation makes George realize that Joe lied about being sick
on the day that the faulty airplane parts were shipped and that he is
responsible for the deaths of the 21 pilots.
13) Sue means that Chris is only idealistic when it comes to other people
but no to himself. Chris works for his father's company even though he
thinks the money is "dirty" but he tells Jim to do medical research
because he loves it.
14) a. TK I chose: Inferring
Chris tells Anne that he is ashamed of taking money from his father's
company because they made a profit during the war.
b. I chose this TK because I had to infer this information from Chris'
conversation with Anne.
15) a. Joe says this because he feels that his family no longer supports
him. When Chris finds out the truth he loses respect for his father and
moves out of the house and Kate also tell Joe he has to face what he has
done.
b. Before reading Larry's letter, Joe justifies what he had done by
saying he did it all for his family. After reading the letter, Joe realizes
4
that his son killed himself because of his crime and that it is not enough
to only care about your family, you need to care for other people as well.
D. The Wave\ Morton Rhue
16) The student had to address Ben as Mr. Ross.
17) 1. He wants them to feel that they are all equal.
18) I think this statement is true because Ben becomes obsessed with
the experiment. He feels like he has power over his students and spends
all his time researching the Nazi party to learn about propaganda. He
even lets Robert be his bodyguard.
19) a. TK I chose: Explaining cause and effect.
I think that Ben didn’t make a mistake in starting the Wave experiment
because in the end he taught his student a valuable lesson about critical
thinking, fascism and following a leader blindly. By the end of the
experiment the students understood what he was trying to teach them.
b. I chose this TK because I explained the effect the Wave
experiment had on the students.
20) a. I think that Robert would agree with Laurie because the Wave
changed his life for the better. He stopped being the class loser and
gained new friends. He gained self-confidence and even started to look
better physically as a result.
5
b. At the beginning David was enthusiastic about the Wave and
thought it could help his football team. During the story he becomes
violent towards Laurie because of the Wave. At the end of the story
David agrees with Laurie that the Wave is dangerous.

Part III- Bridging Text and Context
E. Mr. Know All\ W. Somerset Maugham
The quote can be applied to Mr. Kelada. Kelada has many weaknesses. He
is arrogant, argumentative, bossy and dogmatic. He loves showing off and
telling people how smart he is. However, at the end of the story we see a
different side to Mr. Kelada. He is willing to sacrifice his reputation and
look like a fool for a woman he doesn’t even know, which shows us he is a
true gentleman. We like Kelada despite his weaknesses.
F. The Split Cherry Tree\ Jesse Stuart
Like Jesse Stuart, Dave comes from a family of farmers. He has to do
farm work. Dave's family was poor. Pa received only a basic education. Pa
taught Dave to value education. Unlike Jesse Stuart Pa was distrustful of
school education at the beginning and thought it was a waste of time. But
after visiting the school he learned to appreciate it. He knows that with
education his son can succeed in life and not have to work as hard as
himself.
