Ok enough rambling....In other

I read an interesting letter from an

content shared in it had me thinking
about the level of dignity and

On a spiritual note; people don’t
know the struggles of one person

life’s decisions can be hard to make
and tough to break. There are those

between you and God. Do not interfere or cause pain because of what
you think is happening, but be a

rediscovery or salvation.
Yet, I was curious about the

populate the national barred cell

Dear Editor:
Please accept my humble
acknowledgments and recognition of OCN Citizens who were
a big part of the Treaty Day
Celebration. It was about one
year ago Councillor Philip
Dorion introduced a motion to
Council to move the Treaty Day
celebration to September 7th,
which is the real date the Treaty
was accepted by The Pas
Indian Band (OCN) in 1876.
With this motion acceptable to
Council, preparations began to
have
a
commemorative
celebratory event, and to move
the Pow-Wow to that date.
In preparation, the following
people made it possible, the
behind the scenes movement,
the organizers, organizations,
sponsors, coordinators,
volunteers, staff of OCN:

Letter to the editor: Treat inmates like animals and will behave like animals
My name is Mark Z McKay and I
am currently incarcerated on
remand till whenever the trial is.
I’m writing to you because of the
difficulty the inmates have to go
through, including myself. There
are certain issue’s that needs to
be addressed of the way inmates
are treated in The Pas Correctional Center.
One of them being is our right to
call a lawyer. I am not allowed to
do, instead the guards phone and
start asking questions for us, then
pass the information to us and
me. Corrections in The Pas jail
are stepping over our right to
legal counsel, I am not allowed to
talk to a lawyer or even speak to
the secretary that works for legal
aid.

Therefore I can’t apply for even

legal aid. I am not allowed; at
least that’s what The Pas
Correctional Center do to certain
inmates.
Second, The Pas Correctional
Center don’t wash the inmate
clothing very well, their very oily
and stink, because of the lack
laundry soap that the machines
don’t give. Maybe half ounce
soap spills in the laundry
washing machines. Inmate’s
clothes are not very clean at all,
and the washing machines are
very big, but only give ½ ounce of
laundry soap. Basically the
clothes are pretty much washed
99% water and 1% laundry soap.
Third, the kitchen is very filthy
due to the grease build up
beneath the fryer, stove and
oven. I find it very unsanitary and
very disgusting.

Fourth, certain correctional
guards don’t do their jobs in The

spend
their
time
playing
computer games that they download and not make their regular
checks that they should do on an

basis.
The

to care about inmate safety; they
only worry about their own safety.
Fifth, The Pas Correctional

Dear Editor:
War Veterans, Korean War, Vietnam,
and also to remember our active
service personnel. We have had
many Veterans from OCN who
volunteered. Our fathers, grand
fathers, grandmothers and mothers
who supported the war efforts.
Today, we have one WWII Veteran,
alive, Mr. Philip Bignell, 85 years
old. Mr. Bignell should be treated
like Royalty. Thank you to the PowWow Committee for honoring my
dad, RCA Gunner Alfred George
McGillivary, served 1939-1945.
Thank you also to the other sons and
daughters of all Veterans’ families in
their effort to remember all Veterans;
prayers were said, to give thanks to
the spirits. This is a good way to
remember our warriors.
Another way to honor the warrior
spirit is to organize as a Veterans’
group and a number of people have
expressed that interest. A meeting
will be called to discuss the
formation of an organization and the
purpose will be to remember and
ensure the efforts of our people are
never forgotten. Dates like
Remembrance Day, D-Day, Dieppe
Invasion, etc will always be
remembered by the people of OCN.
Another special event was the
Terrance Head memorial; Mr. Stan
McGillivary and family were
sponsors and it was an honor to be
asked to be a part of.
Finally, thank you for the opportunity to be stand-by judge and to
assist when the assigned judges
needed rest. It’s not easy being a
judge because everyone is a good
dancer. There are certain things you
look for when judging: presentation
(dance style); traditional dress
(regalia); movement of the feet;
movement to the beat of the drum.
Its fun to learn these things and great
to see, hear, and feel the songs.
And finally, thank you to Larry
Dorion for the pipe ceremony on
Friday morning. During this time,
the OCN Paspewin Group presented
cloth and tobacco to the spirits of
God to guide our efforts as we work
to resolve some of the damages that
were done in Day Schools and Home
Placement Programs. Just like the
horrible history of residential
schools, the Day Schools and Private
Home Placements were equally
horrific. Our group is now federally
incorporated and will work with
other national interests on this issue.
Ekosi Maka, I have no official
capacity, however, my letter is
presented to gratefully acknowledge
the positive efforts of all our people.
Without the dedicated efforts much
of this stuff would not happen.
Thank you to all.
I will share about the Treaty
celebration in the next issue.
Before it gets too late, I would like
to thank a number of people; people
who gave themselves to ensure our
community, our people, benefit from
these positive events.
These events we host, Opaskwayak
P o w - Wo w C e l e b r a t i o n s ,
Opaskwayak Indian Days are a
reflection of our history and our
culture, and therefore it is important
to promote and support both. One
reflects our prowess and abilities to
survive in nature. The other
promotes the spiritual aspect of our
Cree way. Both are important as we
try to preserve and bring our Cree
way to life. The spirit of the
Creator’s law is in our youth.
In the last submission, acknowledgements were sent to the OID Committee; to Council for their support and
to the Community for being
excellent hosts.
In this submission, my sincere
thanks to the Pow-Wow Committee
for an excellent presentation and to
the many people who were there to
help. Of course, the Pow-Wow
Committee has been meeting all year
to prepare for this event and to
ensure we have the proper financial
resourcing. Once funding is secured,
the planning starts. The funding is
the effort of the Monster Bingos, etc.
which Council guarantees. It is
known we profit when these events
take place; there is always a spike in
our sales, hotels are full, fuel is
needed, meals are bought; it is
important in the promotion of our
economy. The financial investment
of these events is returned in many
ways.
At this Pow-Wow, we had many
specials, memorials and good old
dancing the traditional way. It was a
great event to many of our youth, and
it was an opportunity for our young
dancers to be admitted into the PowWow family with their self-made
regalia; it was a special moment for
these kids. It was good to see our
community dance with the youth, in
particular, Adam Kaphesewat, a
chicken dancer, who was in from
Saskatoon to be here for his cousins
and to support their spiritual
admission into the Pow-Wow circle.
Many, many thanks to Phyllis
McLeod for her time and effort to
show these kids the traditional way,
and to show them how to make their
regalia. My wife said they looked
like angels with spread-out wings
when they were whirling around
with their shawls, spread-out like
wings. Also, thanks to the parents
who helped their children with their
regalia. Looking good.
Another special, worth mentioning is
the Veteran’s special at the PowWow, honoring our Veterans is
always a special moment, to Yours in Brotherhood,
remember the sacrifice our World Nathan McGillivary

Time and the Universe
By Jeremy Richards
Time, when did it start, how did it
come to be? There is no definitive
answer to what exactly time is. The
Big Bang Theory is the most widely
accepted theoretical concept when
debating the very existence of time
and the universe. Is there even a
direct correlation between time and
the universe? What is time, how do
you define time? The universe is said
to have started some 13.7 billion
years ago when an explosion of
immense cosmic energy was ignited
and the dark matter was filled with a
blinding explosion that is thought to
be still expanding outwards to this
day; perhaps expanding into nothing
like the flick of a match.
There are so many theories as to how
the universe works; from the sheer,
unfathomable magnitude of its size
to the age old question of “Are we
alone in the universe?” While there
is no assured claim to say otherwise,
consider that the speed of light takes
“only” 1.3 seconds to reach the moon
from earth; the moon is 238,855
miles from earth. A light year is the
amount of distance light travels in a
year (365 days); 1 light year = 6
trillion miles or 10 trillion kilometers. The closest star/solar system to
that of our own goes by the name of
Alpha Centauri , which is 4.3 light
years away from earth. It would take
roughly 76,000 years for a space
shuttle to reach Alpha Centauri.
There are over 300 billion stars in the
Milky Way galaxy, most of which are
giant red dwarfs at the end of their
life spans; they “only” have about
500 million years left before they
burn out, yet all of this comprises just
1 single galaxy. However when you
account for the estimates of the total
number of galaxies (which is anywhere from 150 to 200 billion by the
way) in the known universe? It’s
hard for the mind to wrap its logic
around this.
And you soon start to wonder at what
stage of evolution might other
planetary
creatures
closely
resembling that of earth are at; do
you think they wonder if we exist?
Are they more technologically
advanced life forms that fly regularly
from galaxy to galaxy, yet, they just
haven’t found our solar system out of
the 300 other sextillion stars in the
universe? (Sextillion is a number
value, it goes million, billion, trillion,
quadrillion, quintillion, sextillion and
so on... oh know, huge right?)
Once you get a sense out of just how
vast the universe is and take everything into account, like, light reaching the moon in 1.3 seconds; a light
year equalling 6 trillion miles; the
closest star system to that of our own
is 4.3 light years away; 300 billion
stars in the milky way; 150 to 200
billion galaxies and it starts becoming dizzying after awhile just thinking of how utterly small earth really
is. Our human minds simply cannot
process the sheer volume and size of
the universe considering how big we
think the Atlantic Ocean is, how big
North America is, how massive the
landscape of Eurasia is (Europe and
Asia).
A lot of people might not want to
hear this but we truly are an
insignificant part in the chain of
Cosmology, evolutionary biology,
and the complete understanding of
astrophysics. We are after all, just
another link in the time line of
evolution; all you need is a little
carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen
mixed with a little phosphorus and
you got yourself the main ingredients
to bacteria, which is the first life
form to inhibit earth. It followed
closely by 580 million years of
complex life structures taking shape
and the first land animals being fish
which, through natural selection,
deviated into a more diverse
selection of reptiles, lizards, and
bugs. The dinosaurs had their fun in
the sun for about 380 million years,
went extinct, which soon gave power
to the rise of another dynasty to reign
supreme.
This dynasty has
dominated the earth for the better
part of the last 90 million years
(Mammals).
Hey would you look at that, modern
human behavior only came into
effect 50,000 years ago and all of a
sudden the entire human race thinks
it is above being replaced or perhaps
even upgraded by an even more
superior genus other than Homo
sapiens. The remnants of our
evolutionary
brother,
Homo
September 21, 2012
rudolfensis, still bears vestigial
organs left behind that we don’t need
anymore such as wisdom teeth for
tearing through flesh or the left over
remnants of our tail now known as
the tail bone.
Might I suggest a new name for the
superior race that is set to dethrone
us in about 100,000 years or so, give
or take; that name shall be Homo
Posterus because the Latin word
“Posterus” means “next” as in the
next step in our evolution. (Homo
sapiens who have looked down on
past uncivilized members of the
Homo
Genus,
the
future
improvement of Homo sapiens,
Homo Posterus, will too be looking
down at us as particularly dumb
subspecies as well in quite ironic
fashion)
Somewhere along the way in this
infinite ocean of time, we will slowly
be weeded out into a superior race.
Hopefully one free from racial
discrimination or other trivial earthly
values so we can distance our past,
learn from our mistakes, and work
together towards the continued
search and discovering of the
mysteries that lay vacant from our
absolute knowledge. Because right
now we are limited, uncivilized
simpletons who think we have the
slightest clue on what is or isn’t
important. Take for instance the idea
of good versus evil. But how could
evil or good exist when both notions
are manmade concepts correlating
with mans own constantly evolving
brain capacity?
When you look down the timeline of
evolution and natural selection,
everything originates from a chance
meeting of hydrogen, carbon,
nitrogen and oxygen being fused
forcibly together 4.7 billion years
when the earth was still in the early
stages of cooling off. So what exactly
is a human being you ask well a
human being is a mammal that
breathes and drinks water and a
functioning brain relying exclusively
on instinct; along with some brain
neuron activity and hormones. Along
with a slow upbringing through the
last 100,000 years, the human being
didn’t reach consciousness until
around 50,000 years ago; and along
came with it the ability to function
and process with motor skills,
improved hand eye coordination and
most importantly, logic. When
humans became conscious and selfaware it sprung forth the “human
way” to question, understand, and to
want to have control over everything
it understands or lack thereof. That’s
where religion comes into play but
that’s another piece entirely all
together that you will read about
shortly.
Above all else, never stop learning,
never stop questioning, and always
challenge the accepted way of thinking with new ideas that venture into
uncharted territory. You can have
1000 bad ideas but all it takes is 1
good idea to start turning heads,
there by advancing and transcending
a once foreign concept into universal
acknowledgement.
