INSTITUTO DE INVESTIGACIONES ESTÉTICAS, UNAM VILLA I TATTI, THE HARVARD UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR ITALIAN RENAISSANCE STUDIES Call For Papers for an International Conference Latin American Perceptions of the Italian Renaissance April 22- 24, 2015 Oaxaca, Mexico Most studies of the Renaissance that address what is now known as Latin America have focused on European perspectives. This research explores how European visions and conceptions of the world were changed by the discovery and occupation of a new continent, an area that presented an unknown and immense territory of geographies, civilizations and objects. The purpose of this conference is to examine the Italian Renaissance from Latin American perspectives. Scholars from many countries and disciplines will explore how Renaissance ideas and knowledge were transferred, used, examined, assimilated or rejected in Latin America, from the sixteenth century to the present. We aim to draw attention to Latin American views on the Renaissance, broadly defined as the period ranging from the 13th to the 17th centuries, and to examine the distinctive and original transformations of the Renaissance in Latin America. Subjects covered include the visual arts, architecture, history, literature, material culture, music, philosophy, religion, or science. Proposals could address specific topics, time periods and areas, or have a broad geographic, chronological, or thematic range. The conference will address four key points relating to the Italian Renaissance and Latin America: 1. Local Manifestations. In the arts and sciences, how did Latin Americans react to Italian Renaissance works and ideas, and to the presence of Italian Renaissance artists and scholars? 2. Impact. What is the impact of the Italian Renaissance on the historiography, methodologies, and theories of the arts and sciences in Latin America? 3. Reception. What Italian Renaissance topics have been studied in Latin America? How does this research differ from that carried out in different time periods or geographic areas? 4. Interpretations. Propose or discuss specific examples of scholarly research on the Italian Renaissance, carried out by the applicant or other contemporary Latin American scholars. Guidelines 1. Applicants must live and work in Latin America. 2. Applicants can be PhD students (with a PhD topic already approved by the applicant’s university), or scholars who teach or research Renaissance topics. 3. Presentations must be given in Spanish or Portuguese, and last 20 minutes. 4. Applications must be sent via email to [email protected] or [email protected] 5.
