As you read, make a list of all the scenes that depict survival as the main theme. There may be as many as 20 or 25. Due: Fr 10/9 B. In your group, compare your lists. Then draw a timeline that charts the dog’s/wolf’s many situations that entail survival. (in class, TBA) C. Read a summary/analysis of Darwin’s theory of “survival of the fittest”. Mark the situations on the timeline that support Darwin’s theory in one color. In another color, mark the situations where Man interferes/influences the outcome. (in class, TBA) D. Consider how much Man influences the natural order of things. Create a presentation that demonstrates your view (see below ). Read: Life of Pi : Start reading Life of Pi ASAP: A. As you read, keep a dialectical journal of references to survival, motivation, and nature . Copy (and cite) 30 quotes from throughout the book that include one of these topics (10 per topic above, total of 30, so 3 or 4 references per theme from each part of the book), and explain what is going on between the main character and the topic. In your groups, compare your DEJ responses and answer the following questions: (in class, TBA) 1. What is the source of Pi’s desire to survive? 2. What helps Pi most to survive his ordeal (what is his main motivation)? 3. How does Pi survive his ordeal (what resources, personality traits, actions help him)? 4. What generalizations can you make about people and survival in difficult situations? a. When/why/how do people survive difficult situations? b. Why do people sometimes succumb to them? c. What are the consequences of giving up in such a situation? d. What are the consequences of surviving such situations? PROJECT (individually/small groups): carefully constructed with an eye to public presentation. Create one product below to depict the theme of SURVIVAL through imagery, symbolism, dreams, and/or motifs . (50 pts.) Due: Fr 11/9 A.
