…unfortunately the home of Precious Moments Carthage, MO R-9 School District New High School building proposal. by: Michael Montague Introduction The Carthage R-9 School district is busting at the seams with students. The current High School was built in 1904. I was born and raised in Carthage, and am very familiar with the area. 2006 School Bond Issue Campaign brochure. Introduction School bond was voted on in April 2006, and was passed. New High School will help the whole district. Only one new school has been built in the last 40 years. The average growth rate of enrollment for the last seven years is 2.7%. The enrollment growth rate from 04-05 is 5.1%. Introduction http://www.yescarthage.com Introduction Main Goal: To use aerial photography to show the placement and the need of a new high school in Carthage, MO. Introduction Objective: To educate you why the city of Carthage needs a new high school. Objective: To show you where the new high school will be built with aerial photos. Objective: Download a digital elevation model, and construct a 3D mock build up of what the future high school might look like. Introduction Objective: To use a pair of aerial photos to show how the city of Carthage has expanded over the course of the last two years. Objective: To use the aerial photos, and my personal knowledge of the city, to propose a second possible build site for the new high school. Study Area The area studied is a field in the SE part of Carthage, MO on River Street, between Airport Drive and Fir Road. The city of Carthage is located in the center of Jasper County. Study Area http://msdisweb.missouri.edu/ Data Used I am using two aerial photographs of Jasper County. One is a 2003 image, and the other is a 2005 image of the county. I acquired these images from http://msdisweb.missouri.edu/. Flowchart of Methodology Methodology Download 2003 and 2005 aerial photos of Jasper County, MO. Observe Images, and clip necessary parts. – Clip: A tricky process. Creating polygon shapefiles to show future build site for high school. Methodology Showing new construction from 2003 to 2005. – Compare 2003 image to 2005, make new polygon shapefiles to show these areas. Giving new polygon shapefiles transparency. Original proposed site for new high school Current high school location Methodology Extract 3-D map of DEM. – Add aerial photo of Jasper County. – Place 3-D buildings, trees, roads, cars, etc. – Make a really cool 3-D animation! 3-D mock build up of future school http://www.yescarthage.com/GRAPHS/NEW_SITE.jpg Methodology Proposing alternative site for new high school. – Used aerial imagery, personal knowledge, and DEM to decide on a location. – Again used polygon shape files to show alternative site. Alternative build site for high school Results With new high school being built, student placement will be redistributed. http://www.yescarthage.com http://www.yescarthage.com// Results http://www.yescarthage.com http://www.yescarthage.com// Results My proposed alternative build site would probably never work. Positives: - Located right next to Hwy 71. - Plenty of Space. - Located in south end of town where new construction is occurring. - Already inside city limits. Results Negatives: – Safety of being so close to highway. – According to the DEM, and personal knowledge, location has flooded before under heavy rain. – Currently occupied by citizens of Carthage. – Surrounding land is planning on being developed commercially, not residentially. Results Only 2 main problems with the favored site: – Area restaurants will take a hit. – Location not inside city limits. Problems One problem with the DEM and 3D extraction. – The 3D model ended up a little exaggerated. Downloaded 2003 image of Jasper County was infrared image. – Still served purpose. Conclusion Confirmed the truth that geospatial science can be used in a number of different applications. Understand why Carthage needs a new high school. With more time, I would build the entire 3D model of Carthage.
