Carey Pinkowski of the Chicago Marathon pres ented Warren his award. photo: Carey Pinkowski, Warren Utes, Ed Zylka You may know some of Chuck’s past adventures and activities, but when you put everything together, Chuck h as had a very full life and is a truly interesting man. Born in Chicago, Chuck has spent his entire life in the Chicago/North Shore area, except for his extensive travels around the world. He was always athletic, playing hockey (Yes Patti, they had ice back then!) and boxing during high school and he continued to stay in g ood shape. As with many of his cohorts, Chuck’s first offshore trip was th anks t o the US government. After going through Paratrooper training, his group ju mped into Holland and Belgium as replacements for the 101st airborne. Chuck saw some very tough action th roughout th e war, which made a deep impression him lasting t o this d ay. Warren now 94 years of age, began running at age 58 in 1978. His first race was the 1978 Park Fores t Scenic 10 Miler which he finished firs t in age with a time of 1:19:50, a finis hing time he went on to surpass over and over again. Over the next 25 years he competed in over 270 races, almos t always finishing first in his age group. Of those rac es fourteen were marathons, the last of whic h he ran in 1998 at age 78 in a time of 3:36:59. Some of his most noteworthy times at various distances are: a 5:22.4 mile at age 64; a 17:56 5K at age 69; a 37:45 10K at age 63, 1:02:07 10 miler at age 69; 1:23:27 half marathon at age 70; and a 3:01:14 marathon at age 70. In 1991 he won a gold medal at the World Veterans Championship in Turku Finland by posting a time of 38:23:69 in the 10K dis tance. LFLB & CARA Circuit Racing Update Race Directors: Laura Kennedy, Ed Packel There is a special Shamrock Team competition, which is separate from the CARA Club Team competition in which all LFLB members are automatically enrolled in. If you have signed up for Shamrock or plan to do so, think about joining (no extra charge) one of the LFLB RC Blue Teams (Age Group Bas ed Scoring). To do so send an email, ideally by Friday, March 13, to race directors Ed Packel and Laura Kennedy at [email protected] Note that the team signup is independent of whether you list Lake Forest/Lake Bluff as your running club when you sign up for Shamroc k (a good idea, though). Also note that we are allowed 10 runners per team but only the top 4 or 5 age group performances from eac h team are used in the final scoring. We are hoping to field 2 or 3 teams this year. During the war, Chuck would frequently go ‘AWOL’ to Paris, but would return to the regiment when they were ready to go into battle or they needed him in a boxing match. After finishing college (NU), going to work, and marrying Peg 62 years ago, Chuck returned to runnin g as he had in h is paratrooper training. He received h is MBA from UC and he and Peg started the Gu dbrand sen Frame Company, which th ey ran for nearly 35 years. If you are a CARA member, there is a rac e entry dis count. He soon took up biking and went on many bike trips visiting sites all over the world. His most meaningfu l trips were the ones that took him back to the venues from his war experiences. His bike rides took him to Nova Scotia, the Pyrenees, the Alps, Normandy and Dordogne, among others. But Chuck d idn’t stop there. He has wind surfed in the Greek islands, X-country skied in Wisconsin, backpacked in Colorado and played in racquetball tournaments all around the country. [bike] POINT TWO TO GO As imposing as all these athletic exploits have been, Chuck has a personal side just as impressive. He and Peg have raised five children and now have seven grand kids and twin great grandkids. He has been a mainstay of the club and has helped increase the female population of our club by st oppin g ladies out on the run and enticing them to join the club. Just last week I saw Chuck’s powerful impact on people. I met a gentleman who commented on my run ning shirt and then began asking me about the LFLBRC and then asked if I knew Chuck G. I mentioned th at he had just turned 90 and he immediately wanted to share a story. He told how he came to the area in 1982 and was looking for a running group. He made one call and didn ’t get a warm feeling so his next call was to Chuck and our newly formed club. Not only did Ch uck make him want to join the club , he and Peg went on t o invite him and his family (four kids) for Thanksg iving Dinner. This runn er, Alan Lowe who was a strong runner for the Club back then, still has glow of gratitud e when remembering Chuck. For all of you who come on Saturday, seeing Chuck and Peg at th e train station is a happy sight. To me, seeing those two every week tells me that all is right in the world and gives me a good feeling. Chuck turned 90 on April 26th and has slowed a little, (not sure what his 5K time is!), but he is still a font of wisdom and stories. In case you haven't done so lately, take some time to sit down and enjoy some of his wisdom either at th e train station on Saturday morning or at his home. He would love to talk to with you.
