by Mackenzie K. If I were a sculptor I’d sculpt a portrait Of a dragon To do a proper job I’d use marble and stone From Mother Nature For his back I’d need a large snow covered slope From the Alps For spikes I’d use Rocks as sharp as knives For overlapping scales I’d peel bark From a great oak I’d sculpt his claws Like sharp scissors With fir needles His tail would be Forked Like a snake's tongue For his head, Titanium And tree trunks His eyes would Glitter Like a dancing fire But I’d keep the best for last For his hot breath I’d use Fire ants, peppers, rubies, And the light and heat from the sun. I was two then so it was a little bit of a challenge. I remember pushing my self up the couch. It felt smooth against my skin. When I got to the top, I did a silent cheer in my head. Then I saw my golden retriever, Wiley. I thought this is the perfect chance! “Wiley’s right up against the couch,” I thought. “So it’s really easy to climb on top of him, unlike last time when he was a foot away and my parents had to help me. Now I want to do it on my own.” I put my hands on his soft coat of fur swinging my legs over him. When I took my hands off him, I saw fur, fur, and fur on my hands because he sheds like crazy. Then, I pushed him forward and he started walking slowly I was so happy just parading on his back. Exemplary Writing Project, 2012-13 ● Nottingham Elementary School ● Arlington, VA
