Politicians, Poll Boxes, and Public Servants: Participating in Politics
 What better time to have an exhibit like this?
 The exhibit has campaign artifacts, old voting equipment, and multimedia elements on
protest songs and the Presidential "campaign" of comedian Pat Paulsen in 1968.
 There is also a great deal of information on how we can all participate in the political
process and government.
 No exhibit of this type would be complete with political cartoons, and we have plenty.

“Poets, Painters, and Paper Public Workshop”

Point of Contact: 940-397-8900
http://www.wfmamsu.org/exhibitions/current-upcoming-exhibitions/poets-painters-paper/
“Poets, Painters, and Paper” explores the American printmaking renaissance of the 1960s-1970s
by bringing together broadsides and prints from poets and artists as diverse as William Everson, LeRoi
Jones, Lee Krasner, and Andy Warhol. Although Stanley Hayter relocated his famous studio, Atelier 17,
from Paris to New York in 1940, it was not until the late 1950s and early 1960s when United Limited
Arts Editions and Tamarind Lithography Workshop, as well small publishers like City Lights Books and
Oyez Press, opened their doors that artists and poets found the collaborative and creative atmosphere
needed to produce a more accessible, affordable, and democratic form of artistic expression.
The artworks presented in “Poets, Painters, and Paper” are the products of a turbulent social and
political time in America—a time rife with racial and gender inequality, growing anti-war sentiment, and,
hovering over it all like a mushroom cloud, the constant threat of nuclear annihilation. For avant-garde
artists and poets alike, this was a time for breaking down the rigid barriers between high and low art, a
time for collaborative imagination, and thus a time to break down the myth of the solitary (and hypermasculine) artist-genius as perpetuated by images of Jackson Pollock in the popular press. It was also a
time of creative cross-over, when the relationships between text and image were once again ardently
explored with the fervor of earlier Modernist experimentation.

The Dallas Opera, in partnership with The Priddy Foundation, presents Jake Heggie and Gene
Scheer’s Moby-Dick, simulcast live from the Winspear Opera House in Downtown Dallas to the Kay
Yeager Coliseum on Friday, November 4, 2016.
The action begins at 6:30pm, co-hosted by KLUV Radio’s legendary on-air personality, Jody
Dean, and special behind-the-scenes interviews hosted by WFAA’s morning anchor Ron Corning and
weather reporter Collen Coyle.
Reserve your free general admissions seats today and you will receive a complementary study
guide and email – reminding you to arrive early to secure your favorite seat in the coliseum.
Moby-Dick, which “opened in a blaze of glory” in 2010, has been met with thunderous applause and
critical acclaim in ports of call around the world. Composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer based
their world-premiere opera on Herman Melville’s epic tale of Captain Ahab’s obsession with the great
white whale, Moby Dick. You’ll sense the danger, tensions, and exhilaration of life aboard a 19th century
whaling ship, as crew members battle the forces of nature in addition to Ahab’s brewing madness. George
Loomis of the Financial Times raved that audiences “…can warm to Heggie’s musically lush, aptly
proportioned and forthrightly tonal score…(which) also boasts striking melodies, vivid atmospheric
scenes and vocal lines capable of showing off voices.” Texas-born tenor Jay Hunter Morris stars in the
role of Captain Ahab, a signature role for this opera world favorite. Music Director Emmanuel Villaume
conducts this Dallas Opera revival, which also stars tenor Stephen Costello as Greenhorn and baritone
Morgan Smith as Starbuck, both from the original cast.
