Olympic Gold Medalist
Olympic Silver Medalist
NCAA & U.S. Open Record Holder
19-time All-American
Four-time Big 12 Champion
Former Husker All-American Adam Pine did what he had done numerous times
during his four years at Nebraska in Sydney, Australia on September 15, 2000.
He etched his name in the record books.
Only this time Pine was not wearing the scarlet and cream of the Huskers, but the
colors of his native Australia.
Pine was a member of Australia's gold medal-winning 4x100-meter relay team.
Although Pine was an alternate on the team, swimming in the preliminaries and not
the finals, he is considered a member and received a gold medal.
Pine then outdid himself a few days later as he swam in the preliminaries of the
4x100-meter medley relay. Pine swam the third leg, and again was listed as an alternate in the race. The Australian squad took home another medal, this time a silver,
and Pine again added another piece of hardware to his collection.
At the 2000 Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Pine became
the first Husker men's swimmer or diver to win a national title. Pine's title came in the
100-meter butterfly, when he outtouched the competition in 51.23. Pine's mark set a
new NCAA and U.S. Open record in that event.
The victory closed out a storybook career at Nebraska which saw the Australian
earn 19 All-America awards, four Big 12 titles and a school-record 102 points scored
at the NCAA Championships.
During each of Pine's first three years, he almost won an NCAA title. He came
close every year, and finally won it during his senior year, putting a total race together.
Pine's Nebraska career was nothing short of remarkable. The Ballina, Australia
native arrived on campus in the fall of 1996 and immediately made an impact.
Pine won his first Big 12 individual title in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the
wall in 47.02. His success carried him into the NCAA Championships as he recorded
the then-highest finish by a Nebraska male swimmer or diver in school history, finishing second in the 100-yard fly with a time of 46.40. Pine's time was only twelvehundredths of a second behind the NCAA record-setting time of Lars Frolander (46.28).
At the NCAA meet, he captured five All-America awards. Pine was also awarded both
the Marvin Grimm award for the best student-athlete and the newcomer-of-the-year
award from the coaching staff.
As the next few years progressed, Pine grew and flourished as a swimmer.
During his sophomore season, Pine again reached the NCAA Championships,
this time he finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (46.35). The field in the fly was
the fastest ever assembled, and Frolander again captured the gold, setting a new record
after touching the wall in 45.59. Pine again earned five All-American awards at the
NCAA meet. Pine also swam on Australia's 1998 World Championship team in the
4x100-meter relay. Pine registered a 49.4 split as he helped the Aussies to a silver
medal. Pine again received numerous postseason awards after his sophomore year.
Pine received the Pete Hagelin Special Contribution Award, first-team academic AllBig 12 and CSCAA Academic All-American awards.
Following his sophomore season, Pine represented Australia at the Commonwealth
Games where he came home with a silver medal in the 100-meter fly.
Pine's junior year was more spectactular than either his freshman or sophomore
years. Pine again finished runner-up at the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard
butterfly, touching the wall in 46.37. Stanford's Dod Wales took the title after finishing third in 1997. With a second-place finish, Pine equaled the highest finish ever at
the NCAA meet by a Nebraska male swimmer or diver after finishing runner-up in
1997. For the third consecutive year, Pine took home five All-America awards from
the NCAA meet. Following the NCAA meet, Pine won the 100-meter fly at the Phillips
66 U.S. Spring National meet, touching the wall in 53.73. Pine also finished sixth in
the 100-meter free (50.83).
Pine had accomplished nearly everything that he could have by the time his senior
year rolled around in 1999, except win an NCAA title.
The senior then rolled to victory, coming back from third place during the final 50
meters to touch the wall in 51.23, ahead of Nate Dusing from Texas (52.00).
"Coming into Nebraska four years ago, winning an NCAA title was what I wanted
to do," Pine said following his winning race. "We have had a lot of success here at
❖ Olympic Gold Medalist
❖ Olympic Silver Medalist
❖ NCAA National Champion
❖ First Husker male swimmer to win an individual NCAA title
(2000 100-meter butterfly)
❖ 19-time All-American
❖ 1999-2000 Team Captain
❖ Four-time Big 12 Conference Champion
❖ Two-time NCAA runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly (1996 & 1998).
❖ Set Husker record for most points scored at the NCAA Championships by
amassing 102 points during his four-year career.
Nebraska, and it is a great way to cap off my career."
Pine's victory in the race helped boost the Huskers into 13th place in the team
standings. The 13th-place finish by the men marks the sixth-highest finish ever in
school history.
After winning his NCAA title, Pine then headed to Australia for the Olympic
trials, where he earned his spot on the relay squads.
Pine continues to work toward degree in business administration as well as continuing his training for future competitions.
At the 2001 FINA World Cup in Paris, Pine continued his streak of excellence,
winning a pair of silver medals in both the 50- and 100-meter butterfly events. Pine
touched the wall in 23.99 to take second in the 50, and 52.04 in the 100. Pine's time
in the 100 was just behind fellow Aussie Michael Klim (51.08) who swept both events.
In March of 2001, Pine was elected into the Australian Institue of Sports's Wallof-Fame. The honor placed Pine among the greatest swimmers in Australia's history.
The AIS is regulated by the Australian Sports Comission, the country's governing
athletic body.
Pine is married to the former Sasha Van Hamburg. Sasha was a four-year letterwinner
for the Huskers from 1997 to 2000, and was a three-time NCAA qualifier.
Adam Pine was the first male swimmer in school history to capture an NCAA title
