solid lubricated ball bearings

Solid Lubricated
Ball Bearings
Polymer solid lubricant
Graphite solid lubricant
When grease is part of the problem of keeping equipment with ball bearings running smoothly,
and when the best style of bearing for the application is a ball bearing, EDT offers a variety of
solid lubricants that replace grease.
Polymer solid lubricant
ƒƒ Oil is impregnated into a porous polymer matrix with other additives. When balls need to roll,
the oil lubricates them, with any excess lubricant getting reabsorbed into the polymer when the
bearing stops turning.
ƒƒ Food grade polymer solid lubricant is white, industrial grades of solid lubricant are gray.
ƒƒ Whenever possible, seals are installed over the polymer solid lubricant .
Graphite solid lubricant
ƒƒ A mixture of graphite and other additives is installed around balls on the cage of a bearing,
then treated with pressure and heat.
ƒƒ A minute layer of graphite adheres to all contact surfaces of the bearing, and when balls need
to turn, the graphite provides the necessary lubricity.
ƒƒ Graphite solid lubricant is especially well suited to higher temperature installations.
ƒƒ Various temperature formulas are available; vacuum-tolerant formulation is also available.
ƒƒ Graphite solid lubricant is not recommended for high impact applications, nor is it rust
inhibiting to the bearing metal.
Where to use ball bearings:
ƒƒ In many severe service applications* where ball bearings are traditionally installed
ƒƒ EDT plane bearings are an excellent alternative that completely eliminate grease
ƒƒ For more about plane bearings, refer to Sections B (Poly-Round®) and D (All-Round®)
Operating conditions in which ball bearings are usually the best alternative include:
ƒƒ High tension applications (v-belt drives, flat belt conveyors, urethane belts)
ƒƒ High speed devices (fans, pumps, table-top conveyors)
ƒƒ Overhung loads (shaft mounted gear reducers)
ƒƒ Trunnion applications

Different kinds of severe service applications require various solutions; EDT offers many choices.
Standard EDT ball bearings are stainless steel (400-series ss and hardened)
Also available: Stainless steel (300-series ss) in limited sizes
NCS (Non-Corrosive Steel) *NCS is a metal treatment that provides corrosion resistance to many fluids
52100 steel (where corrosion resistance not an issue)
Many sizes and styles in inventory, others available on a custom basis.
