Level A
1. Which steps solve this 2 step problem:
Behroz has £15 in his wallet, he spends £5 on a book then his sister pays him the £10 she
owes him.
The correct answer is: B. 15 - 5 = 10
10 + 10 = 20
Behroz starts with £15, then spends £5 (subtract 5 from 15 leaving £10). Then his sister pays
him £10 (add £10 to the £10 he had - meaning he now has £20)
2. Which steps solve this 2 step problem:
Mona has £3 in her purse, then she takes £20 out of the cash machine. Afterwards she
spends £2 on a coffee.
The correct answer is: D. 20 - 3 = 17
17 + 2 = 19
'Take' may make you think of take away which means subtract, but here Mona is taking
money out so she is getting more money - add £20 to the £3 already in her purse giving £23.
Then Mona spends £2 so subtract £2 from the £23, leaving £21.
3. Which steps solve this 2 step problem:
Cathy eats at a restaurant with three friends. The bill comes to £36. The group agrees to add
a £4 tip. Then they agree to share the total payment equally.
The correct answer is: A. 36 + 4 = 40
40 ÷ 4 = 10
First add the tip to the bill (36 + 4 = 40). Then divide the total equally among the four people
(Cathy and her three friends): 40 ÷ 4 = 10

4. Which steps solve this 2 step problem:
David buys a bottle of milk for 45p and a bar of chocolate for 42p. He has a coupon for 10p off
the price of the bar of chocolate which he uses at the checkout.
The correct answer is: C. 45 + 42 = 87
87 - 10 = 77
First find out the total cost of the milk and chocolate (45 + 42 = 87). Then take away the value
of the coupon: 87 - 10 = 77 (the word off gives you the clue that you need to subtract).
5. Which steps solve this 2 step problem:
Anil buys 2 bags of apples for £1.14p each. Then he buys a jar of coffee for £3.37.
The correct answer is: A. 1.14 × 2 = 2.28
2.28 + 3.37 = 5.65
First work out the cost of 2 bags of apples (1.14 × 2 = 2.28). Then add the cost of the coffee
to this total: 2.28 + 3.37 = 5.65)
6. Which steps solve this 2 step problem:
Marcin has £1.50 on his travel card. He adds on an extra £20. Then he travels by train and
the fare is £5.20.
The correct answer is: D. 1.50 + 20 = 21.50
21.50 - 5.20 = 16.30
The problem is about what value is on the travel card. First add the £20 that he put on his
card to what was already on there (1.50 + 20 = 21.50). Then subtract the cost of the fare
(21.50 - 5.20 = 16.30 left on the card).

2W = 2 × 5 = 10
12 + 10 = 22
6. Find the value of the perimeter (P) using the formula P = 4L
When length (L) = 10cm
The correct answer is: D. 40 cm

8. Find the value of the distance in miles (D) using the formula D = S × T
When speed (S) = 30mph and T = 4 hours
The correct answer is: D. 120 miles
30 × 4 = 120
9. Write a formula to show this:
If I think of a number (n), then add 8, I get 10.
The correct answer is: A. n + 8 = 10
number plus 8 equals 10
10. Write a formula to show the total cost in pence (C) of a number of cans of sweetcorn (n) at
65p each.
The correct answer is: C. C = 65n
The cost would be 65p for each can bought. If you bought 2 cans it would be 2 × 65. We are
using n to stand for the number if cans so the cost is n × 65. This is written as 65n.
Cost (C) = 65n

1. What does this formula mean in words:
(where S = speed; D = distance; T = time)
S=D/T
The correct answer is: D. Speed = distance divided by time
D/T means divide D (distance) by T (time)
2. What does this formula mean in words:
(where P = perimeter; L = length; W = width)
P = 2(L + W)
The correct answer is: C. Perimeter = two times the total of length plus width
The brackets tell you to work out what is inside them first. So you need to find the total of
length and width and then multiply by two.
3. What does this formula mean in words:
(where T = total cost; n = number of items bought and C = cost of one item)
T = nC
The correct answer is: A. Total cost = number of items times cost of one item
Two letters together means multiply the values of the letters.
