KAIMUKI ORCHID SOCIETY AUGUST 2016 PERIDOT AUGUST—Hot weather, heading toward the end of summer, and back to school. The weather suggests attention to full irrigation and continued fertilization. And even with the march to the end of summer, the weather will remain warm and not cool until the Fall. “Back to school” is a reminder to re-visit our orchid culture data and recall that pests thrive in hot weather. As such vigilance is required in combating thrips, spider mites, and other insects. And while we are at it, pay attention to fungus and diseases. Inspect and treat plants for any maladies. As a minimum, use Bayer 3 ‘n 1, a recommended multipurpose treatment. Water under the leaves. Keep your growing area(s) clean. Gather and dispose all dead leaves, flower spikes, and old canes. Keeping the area clean will make you and your plants happy, a hopefull goal of the backyard grower. Good growing! JULY MEETING – Calvin and Sherry Abe were the guest presenters at the July meeting. A multimedia presentation on the 2016 Tokyo International Orchid Show was the main order of business. Professional photography, expert narration, and excellent composition of images and music made for a very enjoyable experience, in some respects, the next best thing to being in actual attendance. The Abes, both retired educators, have taken their classroom disciplines into the world of orchid culture, photography, and presentations, much to the delight of the folks that experience their work. Society members were each provided, complements of Mr. Roy Tokunaga of H&R Nurseries, a hybrid plant named after Mrs. Abe, a very nice touch indeed, to round out a most enjoyable presentation. The KOS Board on behalf of its members extends a gracious Mahalo to Calvin and Sherry for taking time from their busy schedules to share their experiences with KOS. AUGUST MEETING – Mr. Scott Mitamura, chief horticulturist of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens, will be the featured speaker at the upcoming general meeting. Mr. Mitamura, a long time member of the Windward Orchid Society, currently serving as a trustee, is an expert orchid culturist. And while the breath of his orchid genus interest is wide, his focus on the elegant cattleya is without peer, as evidenced by regular receipts of top awards in the cattleya categories at many of the annual orchid shows. Story has it that the only time that Mr. Mitamura does not win top honors is when he does not enter the competitions. Mr. Mitamura’s expertise is not limited to his orchid culture knowledge. He is a master teacher and mentor, sharing information and tips with and offering guidance to anyone interested in orchid culture. He is a fixture at the classroom sessions at the orchid shows and publishes tips and suggestions in the monthly WOS newsletter and in the guidance section of the AOS website. KOS is honored and privileged to host Mr. Mitamura. This a “do not miss” presentation so come early, settle in, and be ready for great session. Do not forget ot bring your plants for Culture Award activity. POPPY Kaimuki Orchid Society, Inc. P. O.
