MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL NORTH
National Honor Society Information Sheet
Martha Pennington Chapter
Welcome! Thank you for showing an interest in NHS and being proactive about the application process.
The National Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding
high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have
demonstrated excellence in the areas of Academic Excellence, Leadership, Service, and Character.

Students should begin getting, and keeping record of, community service hours starting their
freshman year. Applicants are required to complete at least 100 hours of community service.
The spring application process will begin for juniors once the 3rd marking period grades are finalized
and the GPA report is updated. Students with a weighted 3.5 GPA will receive letters of eligibility
from their English teachers.
Students should remember that NHS is an exclusive club; therefore, attaining a 3.5 GPA and
completing 100 hours of community service DOES NOT guarantee acceptance.
The judging of applications includes five members of a faculty council, and is a double blind process
with a majority vote. That majority vote from the council is final. However, juniors will have the
chance to re-apply in the fall as seniors and are able to receive feedback on where to improve the
application for that time.
Remember, since your name is not on the application, you must represent yourself to the best of
your ability throughout the application. Include ALL that you amazing students do, and please don’t
be too humble.
The application can be found at all times by visiting the North website, clicking on counseling
department, then National Honor Society. Feel free to download the application, “Save as” to your
computer, and begin typing your information in!
If you have any questions about the application or need assistance with its completion, feel free to
