GAIN there isn’t much going on with us at
this time of year. You will notice I did not say
“this season of the year,” because it seems that
the spring season has an indefinate time span. We
start this “season” with about five to six feet
of snow on the level and pass through a complicated range of temperatures to finally arive
at summer. It seems the temperatures were
controlled by Dow Jones with all the ups and
downs.
All we can hope now is for the weather “gurus” to
give us some sun and fair temperatures for our
parade season.
As usual we will welcome any and all parade
participants to ride with us whenever we bring our
LOH trailer.
Right now we are looking for qualified individuals
to assume our two open positions of Adjutant and
Finance Officer. Hopefully we will succeed.
Shifting gears, we will give you a recommendation for some
excellent reading. For those of you who are military veterans or who just enjoy
a very good non-fiction account of history, I must give ten stars to “The
Soldier’s Story” by Ron Steinman. It is a compilation of interviews with
Vietnam Veterans and CIA personnel and covers the war from start to finish.
I especially enjoyed the coverage of the final hours of the withdrawal, as
there has been a great lack of first hand details available in print. Barnes and
Noble has it at a very affordable price.
Currently I am reading “Mission to Berlin” by Robert Dorr and caught one
of those strange occurances that are sometimes accidental to warfare.
On August 17, 1942, 18 B-17E bombers of the 97th Bombardment Group left
England to carry out the first American bombing mission of WWII. Leading
the mission to Rouen, France was Major Paul W. Tibbets, Jr. in the aircraft
“Butcher Shop.” All 18 aircraft were carrying British bombs because American
ordanance was not yet available. Dispite the heavy losses of aircraft in the
European Theatre during the war, “Butcher Shop” was one of the few which
survived, only to be scrapped in 1945, long after the end of hostilities in
Europe.
Strangely enough on that very same day, the same Major Paul W. Tibbets,
Jr., dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima from his B-29 “Enola Gay.”
Coincidence or fate??
ELL we survived winter’s push, I
think. I'll probably write this article,
then we'll get a foot of snow. I've been
under the weather for the last seven weeks,
and doing much better now. Anyway, the
Provost Guard had a tough angry winter, but,
still always at the ready. Chief Howe, Maj.
Nepo and Capt. J.D. and all our proud volunteers stood tall. Its a good thing the Chief and
J.D. kept the three crusiers in tip top condition.
Especially, the Chief's crusier, as he has to go
all around and make sure all bases are covered.
O.K. folks, after this weekend’s card show its on
to our pride and joy, the circus. This is when we all
get together and see a lot of people, we don't get to see
during the year. I know its a lot of work, but, we seem to
appreciate ourselves after the show has moved on. So, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages, we hope you had fun at the circus.
It takes a special person to be able to work outside in some of the
weather we endure in New England; whether it is blazing hot in July and
August or freezing cold with wind and snow in January and February. If
you are a person who likes the outdoors in all kinds of weather, we can
use you in our Unit. The obligation of being a member the Provost, is that
you are expected to attend a minimum of 40% of all Tours of Duty. If this
would fit you, please give me a call.
