supplied what all people

5. Vikings & Leif Ericson

from Norway & Denmark
Killing tons and seizing land
A need for protection
• What did they make to
defend themselves?
Feudalism
So let’s try it!!!
Picking
your
parts!!!
Feudalism
• The King/Queen please take
a seat and get comfortable….
• Everyone else applaud the
king/queen and say “God
save the king/queen! ”
• You are more than welcome
to eat the snack provided
Feudalism
• Serfs go find a set of tables
and use the yarn to tie
yourself to a leg of the table
(just tie it in a bow)
• Everyone says…”Get to
work!”
• What does this symbolize?
• Get right to work coloring
the pictures….stay inside
the lines and then tape it to
a starburst
Section 2.4
1. Where did monarchs get their
power?
• The “divine right of kings” which
meant God gave them the right.
2. Why is William the Conqueror
considered an important monarch?
• Started the line of Norman kings in
England, bringing feudalism with
him. Feudalism brought stability
and order to England.
Section 2.7
1. What were the responsibilities of
peasants in the feudal system??
• They raised crops and livestock.
Some worked as carpenters,
shoemakers, and smiths. Peasants
paid taxes to Lords
• 2. What were some of the difficulties
and challenges?
• They worked hard and paid taxes.
Theywere required to grind their grain
at the lord’s mill and the miller kept
grain for the lord and for himself.
They lived in small homes with few
possessions. Serfs were bound to the
manor and couldn’t leave without
permission.
Now back to our
class feudal
system.
Feudalism
• Lords approach the king one at
a time and kneel before
him/her
• And pledge your oath
• “In taking this oath of loyalty,
I swear to be loyal to you all
the days of my life and never
to make war against you.”
• If you repeated it correctly the
king may gift you land.
Feudalism
• Lord go back to land you were
given…sit on top of the desk. Say to
your serfs tied to your land.
• Everyone says…”My lord, oh my lord
how amazing you are with all your
land.”
• “ I have allowed you to live on and
farm the land of my manor. In
exchange, you must give me a large
portion of the goods you produce. In
return, you can farm and live on this
land safely. Give me four of your
food tokens now.”
• Serfs hand over your tokens and
keep making food.
Feudalism
• Lords…now that you have
land you need to defend it
from the two imposing
groups…WHO ARE THEY?
• So what do you need?
• KNIGHTS!!!
• Everyone say… “Ooo, awww
a Knight..how strong!”
• Knights flex your muscles
Feudalism
• You need knights to defend
your manor, and you must
attract them by offering them
payment and a place to live.
(knights offer your services)
• You may offer a knight as
many food tokens as you wish,
but remember to keep some
for yourself.
Feudalism
• Swearing in a knight… (on
your knee)
• “In exchange for the goods
and land given to me, I
promise to be loyal to you
and to fight in defense of
this manor and kingdom.”
• If you repeated it correctly
you can stand with pride next
to the lord
Feudalism
• Knights it is your turn to
work for your keep…. (each
knight will compete)
First you earn 2 more food
token/land for your manor.
Second - 1 more food token
and a serf dies
Third – a knight and serf both
dies
Fourth – you are completely
taken over and all of you die
Feudalism
• The king is in need of help
and asks for the lords to
pay them back for their
generosity. They ask for
food from each lord (since
the lord lives on the kings
land – lords you may need
to take more food from the
serfs)
• The king also demands 1
knights from each manor
Feudalism Recap
• How did it feel to be a monarch?
A lord? A knight? A serf?
• How did it feel to be “born” into a
role you could not change?
• In what ways were the lord,
knight, and serf dependent on
each other?
• Why do you think loyalty oaths
were necessary? What do you
think would happen if someone
broke a loyalty oath?

organizing a society in this way?
Disadvantages?
