November 1, 2015 REALITY AND SYNOD Last Sunday the Synod on the Family concluded in Rome. A relatio or report was made to the Holy Father and he will have time reflect, pray and evaluate the suggestions made by the Synod Fathers. I thought you might to know a little about these meetings and so I have formed a few very simple questions and answers. It is important that you know a little about synods because the media does not understand the Church well enough to give an accurate report. Here goes: When did these Synods actually begin? Although in the history of the Church there have always been some gatherings of bishops, these Synods were began by Blessed Paul VI in 1965 to have a number of bishops discuss questions that are of special interest to the Universal Church. This past Synod is particularly noteworthy since there was an extraordinary effort to get as much input as possible from any and all Catholics. Who votes at the Synod? The bishops or Synod Fathers are entitled to vote. These bishops are selected by the Holy Father. In certain cases the Holy Father permits non-bishops to vote. Four of the most recent Synod Fathers were Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, the current president of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops and Archbishop Blase Cupich, the Archbishop of Chicago and Archbishop Charles Chaput, the Archbishop of Philadelphia. What is the authority of the Synod? The Synod Fathers are privileged and valued consultors to the Holy Father and have been chosen by him. As bishops they share with him (as do all other bishops) the mission to teach the Catholic faith. It must always be remembered that all bishops teach cum Petro et sub Petro-with and under Peter. The Pope and the Bishops are consecrated to preach and proclaim the sure and certain truth of the Gospel. The deliberations of the Synod Fathers are consultative and as such are not binding on the consciences of the faithful. It is up to the Holy Father to make the definitive determination on the final report of the Synod. Did the Synod Fathers' Report suggest a change in Catholic teaching? No, it did not. Rather suggestions were made regarding pastoral practice. The synod reaffirmed the teaching of the Catholic Church on the Indissolubility of Marriage and urged that a better outreach be made to the divorced and the remarried. It is true that some bishops wished the Church to allow certain divorced and remarried Catholics to be able to receive the Holy Eucharist even if there was no annulment. This was part of the debate and discussion, but not part of the Final Report. Are there things the media doesn't understand? Absolutely. The media seems to think that the Church is a democratic organization and that the majority rules. It also has the idea that the Synod can in some way pressure the Pope. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Holy Father and the Bishops are united in an apostolic bond of collegiality (working together as brother bishops) and every bishop realizes that the Pope is the Vicar of Jesus Christ and enjoys supreme and universal jurisdiction. The Pope answers to Jesus Christ--and no one else! For your information, I thought you would like to see how the Code of Canon Law speaks of the role of the Pope: Can. 331 : The bishop of the Roman Church, in whom continues the office given by the Lord uniquely to Peter, the first of the Apostles, and to be transmitted to his successors, is the head of the college of bishops, the Vicar of Christ, and the pastor of the universal Church on earth. By virtue of his office he possesses supreme, full, immediate, and universal ordinary power in the Church, which he is always able to exercise freely. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald PLEASE VOTE Tuesday, November 3rd is Election Day. As your Pastor I encourage and urge you to exercise your right to vote. It is a long thin handled scoop which is dipped into the cruet containing water. This is something not often seen recently, but here is what it is and why it is used. At the offertory the priest adds a small quantity of water to the wine in the chalice. It must be a small quantity so that there is not the least doubt that the wine in the chalice can’t any longer be called wine. In other words, it cannot be so much water that it significantly dilutes the wine. So at the offertory the celebrant may use what we call a “scruple spoon”, a tiny dipper-shaped tool with which he dips up a tiny quantity of water from the cruet to put into the wine in the chalice. Psalm 16:3 Saints and Martyrs: "St.Thomas More and St. John Fisher, (are) martyrs who laid down their lives rather than violate their consciences or their sacred principles. Their courageous witness of faith continues to stir the minds and hearts of people yearning for authentic freedom, and specifically, for religious freedom." Archbishop William Lori homily, 6/22/12 "We surely are not facing (in America) the dire brutality that confronted St. John Fisher. But our Church and her institutions do find themselves today in perilous waters." The total number of Christians martyred in the early church is unknown. It is known that persecution occurred through stoning, crucifixion, burning at the stake or other forms of torture. The period before Constantine (3rd century) was the "Age of the Martyrs". (religionfacts.com/persecution; wikipedia.org) Today we are seeing another "Age of the Martyrs" as tens of thousands of Christians are violently killed every year. Saints and Martyrs Today: Religious persecution of Christians is rampant worldwide where followers of Jesus are the targets of religious cleansing. Pope Francis has repeatedly decried the persecution and begged the world for help, but it has had little impact. "Western leaders ... will be remembered for their near silence as this human rights tragedy unfolds", said author Kirsten Powers. (usatoday.com, 4/21/15) Recent Headlines: * Indonesian churches destroyed; * Persecution in Pakistan; * Egypt: Coptic Churches attacked; * Kidnapped Nigerian girls still alive, forced to convert, raped; * Eastern India pastor shot dead to 'terrorize Christians'. (christianitytoday.com, 10/21/15) O Lord, The plight and suffering of the Christians is heavy and frightening. We ask you, Lord, to give us peace and stability, to live with each other without fear and anxiety, but with dignity and joy. Glory to you forever. Amen Events: *Wednesday, November 11th 7:30PM Corpus Christi/St. Aidan CFFR meeting in the Convent. All are welcome! * Wednesday, November 18th, 7:00-9:00 PM, Thomas Renker, Esq. & Barbara Samuells, CFFR President, will speak about denials of religious freedom in America, Our Lady of Victory School - Memorial Hall, 2 Bellmore St., Floral Park, NY 11001 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA The Gospel for today is the perfect standard for our Christian life; at the same time viewed by the standards of our disordered society it is just moral platitudes. In these times where we are living, to look at the “Beatitudes” with the eyes of our soul, we see the blue print of a holy life. Let’s be joyful and be glad, let’s see in it a summary of the entire life of Christ, which we want to imitate. Yes, indeed, the Lord presents us with many paradoxes, “To be poor in spirit….” In these times when we are all attached to material gains and riches of this world, to be poor does not sound blessed; as long we do not ponder the divine call of our Lord to “be perfect as your Father is perfect” we will not see this call as to be detached from temporal things and seek the riches of the spiritual life. “Blessed are the meek …..” nowadays all that we admire is to be strong, to be in control, and yet the true strength is to be “wise as serpents and gentle as doves…” as Jesus describes.“Blessed are they who mourn….” No, we are looking for happiness, for a life lived looking for joy and we shall be happy when we mourn? Jesus does not refer to proper sorrow but forms of despair without hope, self-pity, mourning for ourselves, inner discontent, not seeking true consolation in the love of Our Lord. “Blessed are the clean of heart….”, and it is so difficult to maintain our bodily eyes clean when so much uncleanliness is around us. The eye is the lamp of the body, and if the eye is clouded from the vision of God it cannot be pure. Only when working towards the purification of our hearts will we find the true love that will permit us to see God clearly, and the spiritual face of Christ. And so on, the Beatitudes are considered to be a ladder, with each step leading us to the next; each step yields a reward, but also requires sacrifice and the grace available. As a result of being willing to follow, with the help of grace, the pathway the “Beatitudes” show us we will walk a pathway to heaven. Hope for today and for the future, let us ponder it through prayer, and everything we experience in this world, pain, anguish, loneliness will be transformed in the hope of everlasting happiness. Please, do not forget to go to see all our CDs in the kiosks, I am sure there are some that you need to hear. We now have DVDs to watch. After you watch them pass them along. God Bless you. Toti Conforti ST. AIDAN’S ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY Please attend our Corporate Mass for Roseanne Mushorn and Maureen Fitzpatrick on Sunday, November 1st 9:00 AM. The meeting will begin at 7:30 PM Human trafficking is a Global and Local problem. Pope Francis has been quoted as saying, “Human Trafficking is an open wound on the body of contemporary society. It is a crime against humanity. It is a scourge upon the Body of Christ.” We hope to raise awareness and change the future for women survivors involved with Human Trafficking. If you have not given in the past please consider donating to this year’s campaign. Your donation will be helping to feed the hungry, provide clothes and emergency support to the needy, strengthen parishes throughout our Diocese, help form our future priests and deacons and provide funding for Catholic Charities’ outstanding programs and services.
