Pine Street Parent Council Meeting January 10th, 2017 The regular meeting of Pine Street Parent Council was duly called and held on January 10th, 2017 in the Library of Pine Street Elementary located at 133 Pine Street in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Quorum was present. In Attendance: Executive: Krystal Grichen (Vice Chair), Pam Briton (Treasurer) Administration: Evelyn Gaudet (Principal), Shelby Hines (Assistant Principal) Parents: Kristi Opalinsky, Lesley Bowman, Zia Pregitzer, Trina Loucraft, Lorena Ellsworth, Mary Sorobey Also in Attendance: Trustee Barb McNeill (Elk Island Public School Board Trustee for Sherwood Park) Absent with Regrets: Shanna Eveleigh (Chair), Vanessa Bower (Secretary), Lorna Magnan (Teacher representative) Meeting was called to order at 7:21 p.m. by Vice Chair, Krystal Grichen 1. Attendance and Introductions 2. Welcome, Treaty 6 Acknowledgment and Guiding Principles a. It was noted that during the Society meeting Principal Evelyn Gaudet acknowledged we are on Treaty 6 land and pay homage to those indigenous people who have walked the land before us. Also in the Society meeting, she referenced the stated Pine Street’s Parent Council’s and Society’s mandate. 3. Additions to the Agenda for Next Meeting 4. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes MOTION: Lesley Bowman moved to accept minutes from the meeting on December 6th, 2016 as circulated. Lorena Ellsworth seconded. CARRIED 5. Trustee Report a. JANUARY – EVENTS/MEETINGS/WORKSHOPS: January 4th – COSC Meeting January 9th – 30th – EIPS Parent Survey – parents are encouraged to complete the survey. This survey was to seek feedback to determine status of Parent Council Meeting Minutes DRAFT January 2017 Page 1 satisfaction amongst our stakeholders within the division. January 19th – Provincial Bargaining Bootcamp – hosted by ASBA – to assist all Boards with local bargaining with their Local ATA members, once the provincial component is confirmed. Prior certificated staff contracts expired August 2015. January 16th – Kindergarten registration begins January 26th – EIPS Board of Trustees monthly meeting, location: EIPS Boardroom, pubic session begins at 10:15 am. January 16th – 30th – PAT/Diploma Exams January 31st – Second Semester begins b. FEBRUARY – EVENTS/MEETINGS/WORKSHOPS: February 1st – The boundary exemption request process for the 2017–2018 begins Feb. 1, 2017 and ends April 7, 2017. There is no secondary or late process. For information related to the exemption process – full details are posted on the EIPS website. February 7th and 15th - Consideration of School Closure – Ministik School Public meetings will be held on February 7 and February 15 at Ministik School (21246 Highway 14, Strathcona County) – commencing at 6:00 pm each evening. February 9th – 10th – Northern Alberta Teachers’ Convention – Edmonton. Throughout the two days EIPS certificated staff attend a wide variety of professional development sessions. c. INFORMATION ITEMS: Davidson Creek Attendance Boundaries – survey has been completed and Stantec is in the process of compiling feedback – they will now compile possible options for the Board to review and then would coordinate dates and location for the Public Consultation Open Houses. Tentative timelines have been set for mid-February, information will be confirmed for all stakeholders once final details are in place. Carbon Tax Levy for School Boards – Minister of Education currently reviewing process regarding levy for school boards – at present no further decisions have been finalized 6. Administration Report a. Principal Evelyn Gaudet presented the following report. b. Pine Street has closed boundaries & will only be taking designated students for 2017/2018. Estimation is that there will be about 60-610 students, based on data from EIPS. c. ECS programs for next year - AM or PM half a day, every day; Full day - M/Thurs or Tues/Fri each with alternating Wednesdays. The parent information evening is on May 16th at 6:30 p.m. Shanna & Krystal to attend parent info meeting. Library fund - $10,000.00. Integration of technology in the library, exploration/maker space concept which could include: lego simple and powered machines, makey makey, makedo, ozobots, mbots, raspberry pi-BrickPi and Starter kit or GoPiGo, Sphero SPRK Robotic ball, Sphero Ollie, snap circuits, tinker toys. Currently sourcing the best prices and suppliers; Mr. Sudyk has been working on coding with several classrooms, Lego robotics have begun and this year targeting grades 4-6. Also researching 360 degree cameras and Virtual reality goggles. Will likely spend the money if council agrees. Campbell Cribb Speech Dates: February 13-17 students will write, correct and finalize speeches in class. February 20-24 students practice speeches in front of class. Speeches are 2-3 minutes in length, must be times, no props, costumes, violence or inappropriate subject matter, improvements. February 27-March 3 Select the best 5 speeches from each class. March 6-10 Select the best 6 speeches from each grade. March 16th school final. Adjudication in Library 8:45 11:40, presentation of awards in gym at 1:00 p.m. April 20th Young Speakers Invitational. EIPS Parent survey is to be completed from Jan 9-30. The link is on the division and our school website. Last year we had the second highest number of responses 8.6 % 156 responses. The top school had 13.4%. This is the opportunity for all parents in our division to have a voice as the accountability pillar by Alberta Education targets parents and teachers of students in grade 4, 7 & 10. The AB Education survey is sent to parents via the mail, so please watch for that and complete that as well if your child is in grade 4, 7 or 10. Last year we saw an increase in the response rate but this still could be better. The Grade 4 survey was sent out by mail. The first round of swimming lessons start in the next few weeks - all grades take lessons at Kinsmen except for one set of ECS students going to Emerald Hills. The last round are later in the spring and are all at Kinsmen. Grade 6 students go skiing to Sunridge on Jan. 25th. Thank you to Parent Council’s contribution to bussing. Money from that fund was used for the concert rehearsal to the Park church. 2017/2018 school calendar was distributed. Q: Where will items be stored A: There was space left in the Library. Carts will also be considered. Q: Will a list be sent as to what the money is spent on. A: Yes. The kids will also want to share creations.
