IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS ON SEMINAR ATTENDANCE
Please read the following document, it contains the School of English policies
on seminar attendance and changing seminars.
CHANGING SEMINAR GROUPS
Seminar change requests from students will not be accepted after week 2 for all modules.
Please make sure you make any such requests in good time.
ATTENDING ALTERNATIVE SEMINAR GROUPS IS NOT ALLOWED
Please ensure that you attend the seminar group that you have been assigned to. Do not attend
alternative seminar groups as you will be marked absent.
Seminar changes are only permitted during the first three weeks of term.
ABSENCES CANNOT BE AUTHORISED
Please note that the School of English does not use Authorised absences. If you are unable to
attend a seminar please let your seminar leader know.
If you are not able to attend for a prolonged period please contact Dr Emma Bainbridge in
English Student Support as soon as possible via [email protected].
POOR ATTENDANCE
All School of English students must attend all lectures and seminars. Where we identify students
with poor attendance we will issue warnings and these could lead to students being required to
withdraw. In addition, when students and graduates apply for jobs, the employers regularly
contact us to ask whether their attendance has been good. We have to answer any such
questions accurately. A student with a poor attendance record may find it difficult to get
employment.
POOR ATTENDANCE - INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is taking firm action against students with poor attendance
records who are in the UK on a student visa. In some cases this has resulted in students having
to leave the UK due to their attendance. We will monitor the attendance of our international
students and will take firm action where we feel it is unsatisfactory; this will include initiating
disciplinary action and informing the UKVI of our concerns.
STUDENT SUPPORT
If you are struggling to attend your lectures and seminars, and/or struggling to submit your
coursework please contact the Student Support Team via [email protected].
The Team will work with you in order to identify what is going wrong, and will put in place the
appropriate support.
