Nutrient Testing, Soil Amendments and Amelioration
Nutrient Testing
Nutrient testing must be considered as compulsory prior to adding any amendments or nutrients. Factual test
results provide evidence of actual requirements to amend soils which sustain plant life. This point is often
overlooked and results in failure of revegetation outcomes and/or erosion control.
Soil Amendments
Soil amendments are the elements in the soil that are vital to sustain plant life, these include:
 Soil Organic Matter Content (Humus), Calcium, Gypsum, Dolomite
In addition to amendments, nutrients are also vital to sustain plant life, these include:
 Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus, Magnesium
Incorporation
Why incorporate into the soil profile?
By combining amendments into the soil profile three (3) major positive impacts occur:
1. Amendments are combined into the soil profile immediately providing a source of nutrients at the root
zone. Plant roots grow at a fast rate and can exceed the peculation rate through the soil profile, a
minimum depth of top soil and incorporation is 150mm.
2. Increased ability to store nutrients and moisture.
3. Soil stabilisation will occur upon plant root establishment.
Why not incorporate into the soil profile?
 Safety – Difficult terrain
 In some circumstances terrain may create an unsafe working environment; these sites are more suited to
application apically. If applied to the surface, it is ideal to complete this as soon as possible after soil
disturbance. This provides the nooks and crannies for the products to penetrate. Watering in is necessary
to help the penetration process, this is ideally managed in such a way that water is not able to cause
erosion or wash away product.
 If application is via apical method, consideration needs to allow for particle size. The smaller the particle,
the more translocation throughout the soil profile. Care needs to be taken to avoid fast penetration and
leaching, particularly in sandy soils.
