Ashes on Ash Wednesday - 5th March
The Marymount National Enhancing Catholic Identity Survey (2012) data perhaps explains why Catholic
rituals such as ashes on Ash Wednesday have appeal. They are a symbol of our confession we are
Catholic. That is, of our owning and proclaiming our Catholic identity. The NECIP data for Marymount
tells us that those adults surveyed who did respond (most staff and 20% of family representatives) do
not share the same understanding of our Catholicity but are far more certain about their belief in Christ
and the importance of their Catholic identity.
The message to carry forward is that it is absolutely important that we practise our traditional Catholic
rituals, and in this way confessing/proclaiming our Catholic identity, as our understanding of our Catholic
faith changes over our life time. As we begin the season of Lent this coming Wednesday with ashes
and confess our Catholic identity, may we take on the Lenten traditions of restraint, reflection, prayer
and periods of fasting in the journey to Good Friday and to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on
Easter Sunday.
March 17 & 18 Enrolment for 2015 & 2016 at Marymount
There are now limited places for Year 7 and Year 8 in 2015. Enrolment applications will be considered
at interviews 1:00pm -7.30pm March 17 & 18. If seeking a place for 2015 please apply immediately
for interview and consideration now. Further enrolment interviews for remaining 2015 places and for
Year 7 2016 are scheduled for May 19 & 20 and August 25 & 26. Reminders have been sent to families
at Marymount Primary School, St Augustine’s Primary School and St Vincent’s Primary School. The
message is: enrol now to avoid possible disappointment. Enrolments and plans are well advanced for
2015.
The first stage of the Middle Years buildings will be completed before the end of Term 1. The second
stage will be under construction in June. The Middle Years buildings will include 19 Classrooms, 2 larger
Music classrooms, 4 Music Practice Rooms, a Science Laboratory, an Industrial Technology & DesignFlexible Area, Amphitheatre, Learning Support Centre, Counsellors rooms, student amenities and
student lockers. The standard of finish and furnishings are as for the Arts, Media and Technology - Mary
MacKillop Building. Visitors to the College for last Monday’s Marymount Tours had the opportunity to
see our plans and the progress of these building works.
Work Programs for teaching Year 7 are being written based on the National Curriculum and our
curriculum plan for Years 7 to 10. Students commencing Year 7 will study Religion, Maths, English,
Science, History, Geography, and Health & PE as core subjects. Their introduction to electives will be
a rotation through two electives each term across Dance, Drama, Food, French, ITD, Japanese, Music,
Visual Art. They will choose their electives for Year 8 2016 in September 2015.

Year 7 and 8 2015 will introduce the new uniform for Middle Years students. The significant change is
a light blue shirt/top which will identify Middle Years students while maintaining the traditional darker
shorts/skirt and distinctive College Crest.
The College will advertise employment positions for additional teaching staff later in March as the
process of preparing for Year 7 and 8 in 2015 continues. We look forward to strong applications from
capable, inspiring and passionate teachers who teach to make a difference for young people here at
school and beyond into their future lives.

Year 10 News
Perhaps a surprise for some is that this newsletter marks the end of week 5 in a 10 week term. Certainly
formal assessment, such as assignment tasks, for mid-semester assessment and Term 1 reporting are
in students hands. These assignment tasks will be due now or shortly. Most teachers will have tests/
exams within the next 3 to 4 weeks. For Year 11 and 12 the Exam Block commences on Monday
24 March. Application to study, assignments and preparation for tests/exams should have started in
earnest. If not, study must start now.

We Keep Year 12 in our Prayers
We keep the Year 12 students in our prayers as they head off to retreat at five retreat centres across
Brisbane and the south-east: may they be more aware of God’s presence in their life and God’s love for
them. They will take time to reflect on and give thanks for the gifts God has given them personally, in
their family and in their friends. In many respects, this time away is about each person’s life and faith
journey, as well as the Year 12 students’ journey into adulthood. Perhaps their senior retreat is the
beginning of their journey from school.

I draw your attention to the procedures for students who arrive late to school. Students are required to
be at school in time for Pastoral Care at 8.30am. However, if you are late for school:

4.
Report to SAO and write your name on the pink sheet for late arrivals.
Collect a late pass and complete the top section
If you have a note for being late attach it to your late pass
If you do not have a note for being late you will need to have your parent/guardian sign your late
pass
5. Have your late pass signed by the teacher of the first class you attend
6. The following day give the late pass to your Pastoral teacher
You will find this and other College Procedures in your son/daughter’s Student Record Book.
While it is imperative that our data is always up to date and accurate on a daily basis, to maximise
learning opportunities students need to arrive for school on time. Any student who is late to school or
to class is adversely affecting their own learning and interrupting the learning of others.
We need your assistance to avoid repeated lateness to school.

Uniform Variations and Detention
As mentioned previously, students are expected to be in full school uniform each day. They are required
to wear the College uniform with pride and respect. For boys this means socks pulled up, belts on and
shirts tucked in. For girls this means skirts are no more that 10 cm off the ground when kneeling, no
excess jewellery or make up, and hair pulled back. Students are checked at pastoral each morning and
during the day by their class teachers.
If your son/daughter is out of uniform, they should:
1. Bring a letter of explanation from a parent/guardian
2. Have the letter signed by their Year Level Pastoral Coordinator before school and receive a variation
slip
3. Carry the variation slip with them until the uniform problem is resolved
Students who are out of uniform, or not wearing uniform correctly and do not follow this procedure,
will be given a uniform detention, which is carried out during the second half of lunch.

Reflection Day letter
emailed this week
Pope Francis’s message to young people is particularly relevant to our Retreat theme of
“Share the gifts you have been given”.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Student Leaders will attend 7.00am Mass on Ash Wednesday morning at Infant Saviour and bring the
ashes back to the College for distribution at the College liturgy. This will commence at 9.00am.
Also on Wednesday, Year 10s will travel to Bond for their Reflection Day which will be facilitated by
Michael Fitzpatrick.
Please remember in your prayers our Year 12 students on Retreat and Year 10s at Reflection Day and
all their teachers, that they will be blessed with the grace to enter fully into the opportunity these
experiences provide to come to a deeper relationship with God and to know themselves more fully.
Pope Francis’s message to young people is particularly relevant to our Retreat theme of “Share the
gifts you have been given”.
Dear young friends:
If we want it to have real meaning and fulfilment, as you want and as you deserve, I say to each one of
you, 'Put on faith', and your life will take on a new flavour, it will have a compass to show you the way;
'put on hope' and every one of your days will be enlightened and your horizon will no longer be dark, but
luminous; 'put on love', and your life will be like a house built on rock, your journey will be joyful, because
you will find many friends to journey with you.
Jesus is the one who brings God to us and us to God.
'Put on Christ!' in your life, and you will find a friend in whom you can always trust; 'put on Christ' and
you will see the wings of hope spreading and letting you journey with joy towards the future; 'put on
Christ' and your life will be full of his love; it will be a fruitful life.
Do not be afraid to ask God's forgiveness! He never tires of forgiving us, like a father who loves us. God
is pure mercy!
You too, dear young people, can be joyful witnesses of His love, courageous witnesses of His Gospel,
carrying to this world a ray of His light.
Pope Francis

Year 12 Update
Connor Faulkner from the Leadership Spiritual Committee is spearheading arrangements for Pancake
Tuesday, the last day before Lent. This a time when we give up some luxuries and practise self discipline.
Year 12s may like to think about how they can be of more assistance at home!
On Ash Wednesday, the student Leadership members will be attending the early morning Mass at
Infant Saviour Church Burleigh Heads. They will then bring the blessed ashes to school where there will
be an important ritual with the distribution of the ashes to our staff and students.
Year 12s then head off for their final school Retreat, to be held over three days. It is a time for students to
grow in their faith, understanding of each other and themselves. A final reminder to parents regarding
a letter, which needs to be written to their sons/daughters for distribution at a special moment during
the Retreat.

Griffith University Griffbus Program
On Tuesday 25 February a selection of Year 12s finest Business students headed to Griffith University
for the opportunity to participate in the Griffbus Year 12 Program. This program entitles students all
across the Gold Coast to visit the campus and spend three days spread across three terms, to grasp a
sense of university life.
By successfully completing the three days and passing the assessments, students will be offered Direct
Entry into any Griffith Business course in 2015. During Tuesday’s visit, hundreds of students were
divided into three groups, including Business Management, Commerce and Hotel Tourism & Sport
Management. I participated in the Business Management course. Our lecturer, Kate, outlined the
importance of Human Resource Management, focusing on recruitment. Fortunately, during Business
last year I learnt about Human Resource Management. These experiences assisted me throughout the
lecture as I had a background of understanding the information that was discussed.
After lunch, our group of 130 students was divided into four groups. We were then group assessed
on our ability to work together with various students from other schools. I thoroughly enjoyed this
experience and look forward to attending the program again in April. This opportunity enabled me to
interact with peers from different schools across the Gold Coast.

Last week Year 12 Business Communications and Technologies students buckled up and went on a tour
of the renovations currently underway at RACV Royal Pines.

As conferences and events are a specialty of this resort, we wanted to find out what went into planning,
holding and catering for large numbers of guests. We viewed the golf courses where the ANZ Ladies
Masters was held the week before, the wedding chapel where many a bride and groom come for
their special day, the back of house catering, and some of the very special rooms for guests. The spa
currently being built looks luxurious and the special sugar creations from the kitchen smelt delicious.

Year 11 Coordinator Update
This year, for the first time, all Year 11 and 12 students have, on their timetables, a double lesson a
fortnight called 'QCS Prep.' While the Year 12s are indeed using this time to prepare to take the
Queensland Core Skills Test later in the year, the Year 11s have been hard at work planning for their
successes.
Mr Michael Murtagh
The goal in these lessons with Year 11 students is to ensure that they work together with their teachers,
parents and advisors to plan their own individual pathway. This work has included study skills, study
timetabling, goal setting, motivation and self discipline. The aim is to support all students in being clear
on their own educational objectives so that they can work towards optimum success and achieve their
own personal goals both at school, in further studies and in the workplace.

Eric came in with a very positive attitude and
spoke us about the positive and negative impacts
in his life. He started off by saying that he was
NOT a motivational speaker; he was just someone
to help you achieve your best. It was clear that he
had had a lot of hardships in life; his career as a
NBA player failed because he helped his team win
while disobeying his coach (he was usually a bench
warmer).
Former NBL player Eric Baily inspired Year 11 students at assembly this week
Against the instruction of the Coach telling him not to score or even touch the ball, with the Coach
constantly saying that he ‘wasn’t good enough, he did it anyway and won the game. After the Coach
fired him he couldn’t find a team in the US to join and moved to Australia and played successfully for
the Melbourne Tigers, Hobart Devils and Gold Coast Rollers.
Later in the session he told us that as a young child he was given up for adoption because of his health
issues. He was also surrounded by a lot of negativity especially “livin’ in the hood” [sic]. Eric said that
the negativity was overcome when no one believed in him and when he was at a low at only 14, with
weak knees and told he would never play basketball.
Eric turned around and proved them wrong and gave his 100%. His story is inspirational and shows that
with clear goals and perseverance, anything is possible. Eric concluded with the thought that negativity
can only change to positivity with you.

Year 10 students with Senior constable Dave Sammons and Marymount College adopt-a-cop
Constable Warrick Fraser during Year 10 Personal Development Day
Personal Development
Last week, Year 10s experienced a Personal
Development day. Our cohort was split according
to House colours and attended 2 different sessions.
The other seminar was given by Alex, who taught
us to use different studying techniques to better
our grades and make us more prepared when an
assignment is due or before a test. We were given
a booklet to fill out so we could remember the
methods spoken about in the lecture. I believe
almost everyone remembered what Alex said
because of the stories she told to describe the
situations you may find yourself in if you forget to
study or if you study but don’t follow up on it. She
interacted with the students and got volunteers
to prove points in a manner that the students
wouldn’t forget, which helped all of us to pay
attention!
The first was about study skills, the second involved
an insight into police work and the potential
dangers we face as teenagers. This was presented
in association with the College’s “Adopt-a-Cop”
project.
Senior Constable Dave Sammons and Constable
Warrick Fraser talked to us about drug abuse, the
outcomes, parties, drinking, pornography and
crime stoppers. They told us stories about the
missions they have had to go on, the drug busts
they have experienced and why drinking, drug
abuse, and pornography is unscrupulous. We were
told about the dangers involving drugs, and the
long-term effects that will haunt us first, then lead
on to drinking penalties and brain damage which
drinking can cause.
That seminar opened my eyes to a
whole new world and awareness to
what harm drugs and alcohol are doing
to our society.
Karla MacPherson
The day was interesting and I would
love to do it again next term.
Fellow reporter Karla MacPherson makes the point
that, “It was made my peers and myself more
confident with study notes and preparation.”
Brittany Stimson
Constable Warrick Fraser talked about all
the penalties involved in sexting and taking
inappropriate photos. We were told that if you
receive, send, own or take photos that could be
classifies as sexually explicit you will be fined or
put on the child pornography list which can harm
your future if you wish to work with children in any
profession.
I believe the Year 10 Personal Development day was
a productive one that educated us to understand
the laws and restriction for offences most
commonly made in our age group. Brittany Stimson
found the sessions “interesting and informative”
and is looking forward to future PD days!

Year Nine News
This week Year Nine students have been talking about the importance of Goal Setting. In their Pastoral
time this week they were all asked to write three goals for this year and at the end of the year we will
review these goals just to see how well they kept to them.
Remember "If we don't know we where we are going – how will we get there?"
We would ask that parents continue to sign their son/daughter's record book every Sunday night. It
is important to see what homework has been set and what assignment work is in progress! It is also
important that any infringements relating to Work Habits are shown to parents. These infringements
are recorded with Work Habit stamps. Students should be explaining to their parents why they have
these stamps!
Also this week students were asked to choose Pastoral Representatives for their Pastoral Group:
9AA: Matilda Anderson & Thomas Fisher
9AB: Jordan Burns & Lily Van Der Meer
9AC: Jacinta Atley & Reece Jackson
9BD: Sarah McKean & Ben Carroll
9BE: Mia Beasley & Simi Tomsen-Ajayi

Year 9 Business Excursion to Westfield Helensvale
Last week both Year 9 Business classes ventured off to visit the Westfield Shopping Centre in Helensvale.
We had to walk to Treetops to catch the bus, then we caught the train from Varsity to Helensvale. The
train station is right beside the shopping centre at Helensvale so we walked into Westfield where it was
our task to go and talk to five different types of businesses to find out information about the business,
such as their ownership structure.
Once we had completed our workbooks, we were free to have lunch or go shopping before we had to
return home. All students thoroughly enjoyed their experience of travelling on public transport and
asking for information at the various businesses.
Thank you to Business teachers Mrs Mathers, Miss Burrows and Miss Crawford for accompanying us

sure all students have the correct equipment.
Yogurt Zone
I am pleased to announce that Yogurt Zone at Burleigh Heads has chosen to reward Marymount
students who compete in the AGCC inter school sport program. They have kindly donated vouchers
to be handed out to the best & fairest players from teams each week. Every week over 20 teams
will receive the voucher, with each team being given the voucher twice throughout the competition.
Yogurt Zone has also kindly offered all Marymount families 10% off any purchase – simply tell them you
are from Marymount when paying. Yogurt Zone is at 29 James Street, Burleigh Heads. Each week the
winners of the vouchers will be listed in the sport section of the newsletter.
District Trials
The following sports have trials in the coming weeks: Netball (Girls 19&under and 15&under), Cricket
(Boys 14&under). See Mr Balym to register and collect information.

Billets are still required for the 15 & under Boys and Girls Football teams competing at the State
