Ideal location, professional people, English speaking With this in mind, our strategic vision is... 8 THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE NEWSPAPER - Since 1879 Ireland on course for 2020 Games Youth Olympic Games, Nanjing, China Late on Monday night the Irish Handball Team shocked the handball world at the Youth Olympic Games, scoring a dramatic 25-24 victory over Germany. The result is a major upset in handball terms and the result of a long journey for the Irish Olympic Handball Association who have developed excellent youth programs. One of the successes has been down to the transfer of athletes from other sports via the Green Giants program. “Every sports person dreams about the Olympics and I am just grateful to the IOHA for giving me the chance to represent my country” says Fionn Ó’Laoire, a former county footballer with Sligo. The result will be a boost to the Senior men’s squad ahead of their European Championship Qualifiers. These courses are a good match in terms of content, level and turnaround times Currently these courses are delivered by Sporting Structures UK. The IOHA will work with Coaching Ireland, Sporting Structures and EHA to train two tutors to deliver these courses in Ireland on behalf of the IOHA. This will create an additional revenue stream for the IOHA The IOHA is in the process of signing up to the Rinck Convention – a pathway to a standardisation of coaching pathways across Europe. the IOHA However, if we are to capitalise on our Olympic status to encourage growth and attract and retain top level athletes, we need to approach the national team structure in a different manner A SWOT Analysis and balanced score card at national team level led to the following summary conclusions: Strengths – young squad, good coaches, untapped potential in relation to conditioning and development Weaknesses - Lack of facilities, low player numbers at senior level, lack of ranking competitions, lack of senior international handball, inexperienced team, lack of profile Opportunities – identify athletes from other sports, youth international tournaments, hosting events Threats – inefficient use of funds for national team programs, lack of planning, lack of high performance culture A four part approach to performance was developed 45 Ireland Senior Team (High Performance) Youth International Green Giants National Academy 46 Performance Director Performance Psychologist Coaches Players Physio/Medial Team National Team Coordinator The national team coaching structure has been redesigned Additional support staff were appointed in Q2 of 2011 – National Team Coordinator, Physiotherapist, Sports Psychologist, Strength and Conditioning Coach The position of Performance Director was also created but this will be filled in Q4 of 2011 The new structure allows for better communication, planning and accountability of the group Greater accountability for funding The players will be better supported Strength and Conditioning Coach The team are developing a High Performance Plan in association with the Irish Institute of Sport to be completed in Q4 of 2011 There will be a greater focus on preparing a national team which can compete at Tier 2 in Europe by taking part in more youth events Initial planning meetings were held in Q3 of 2011 47 Street handball/Schools Open Academy Days National Academy Days have been very successful in the past These will be extended in 2012 Club National Academy Days Underage Representative National academy days will provide additional specialised coaching and allow for talent ID Regional/club coaches will assist in running these, as well as national team coaches This will be used as a tool to grow the junior club game from our traditional powerbase of schools by acting as a feeder system and helping to build a relationship between schools, clubs and communities 48 Green Giants is a talent search initiative to attract existing athletes to handball and a fast track to the Irish national team Assessment criteria are physical and sporting, but aimed at building a program for youth leading to a strong squad of players for Ireland in 2014 It is based on the UK Sport’s Sporting Giants program and Paralympics Ireland “Para Lions”. An integrated marketing campaign will interact with athletes from Rugby, GAA, Soccer and other sports It will take place over 7 screening days in Ireland from 2011 – 2012 to capitalised on Olympic Spotlight All athletes will be fed to clubs, but the talent that is identified will also train with the national team Development of an international scouting network to identify Irish qualified players overseas Initial 12 month trial to gauge success of the program This will be used as a tool to grow the club game by acting as a feeder system and helping to build a relationship between schools, clubs and communities Raise the profile of Olympic Handball in Irish Sports Community 49 The IOHA have no facility of their own In 2011 a floor was secured from the EHF – this can be stored and used repeatedly (value €40K) The IOHA is seeking partners (Futsal, Judo, Archery) to secure a long term home which will be multi purpose This will enable each sport to attract international events to Ireland and make Ireland more competitive 50 Goal Measurement Criteria Target Completion Improve national team performance in a professional manner Senior international friendly with Scotland, Andorra and USA (?) in Q4 Training Camp Nov - European Challenge Trophy Appoint Performance Director Annual Planning Process Coaching Review Full development of Performance Plans for Senior and Junior program with Irish Institute of Sport Q4 Q4 Q4 Q4 Q4 Q4 Q4 Green Giants Development of Green Giants program and pack Media launch Integrated marketing campaign 2 Screening Days Q4 Q4 Q4 Q4 National Academy Develop Academy Schedule and curriculum Q4 Facilities Development Seek interested partners for the development of a multi purpose handball facility Q4 Improve national team performance in a professional manner March – Festival of Handball (Faroe Islands) April - Warm Up camps for Olympic qualified teams Men’s European Championship Qualifiers Sep/Oct Tri-Nations Annual Planning Process Q1 Q2 Q4 Q4 Q4 Green Giants Screening Days x 2 Screening Days x 2 Review Q1 Q2 Q3 National Academy 3 Open Academy Days 1 National Academy Day Q1, Q2, Q2 Q3 Facilities Development Seek interested partners for the development of a multi purpose handball facility and develop plans Q1 Performance Year 1 2011 Year 2 2012 Goal Measurement Criteria Target Completion Improve national team performance in a professional manner Euro Challenge Trophy – hosting in Ireland x 8 teams Annual Planning Process Q4 Q4 Green Giants Screening Days x 2 Screening Days x 2 Review Q1 Q2 Q3 National Academy 3 Open Academy Days 2 National Academy Day Q1, Q2, Q2 Q3, Q4 Youth International U16 European Youth Olympic Festival Utrecht U-19 European Open Q3 Q3 Facilities Development Begin construction Q1 Improve national team performance in a professional manner Tri-Nations Annual Planning Process World Championship Qualifiers Q4 Green Giants Screening Days x 2 Screening Days x 2 Review Q1 Q2 Q3 National Academy 3 Open Academy Days 2 National Academy Day Q1, Q2, Q2 Q3, Q4 Youth International M U18 Euro M U18 Beach Euro Youth Olympics Nanjing China U20 European Championships Performance Year 3 2013 Year 4 2014 If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us: Irish Olympic Handball Association Sports HQ, 13 Joyce Way, Parkwest, Dublin 12, Ireland Tel: 01 - 6251165 E-Mail: [email protected] www.olympichandball.org 53
