Inside Page 2 Pastoral news—A endance Page 3 Pastoral news contd…… Star of the week Reminders Page 4 Enrichment It is my great pleasure to introduce this newsle er, in which you will find informa on about the manifold events, achievements and successes of the term. This will be the first newsle er for parents and carers of our new Year 7 students – who have made a fantas c start to their secondary school journey. The extra classes, sports teams and enrichments which are now running to accommodate twice last year’s numbers have added such dynamism to the Academy, even though we are s ll not half-full. A highlight of the term was the (belated) Opening Ceremony, which took place in late November. It was a pleasure to welcome the builders, architects and Hackney Council representa ves who made the opening of our Academy possible. Guests, including parents of students in the opening yeargroup, were given tours of the Academy, listened to wonderful performances from the band, choir and soloists, before a ending a short ceremony in the old chapel, where the Mayor of Hackney and Lady Bourne unveiled a plaque. It felt, to borrow a phrase from Churchill, very much like the end of the beginning. At the ceremony, one of our Year 8 students, Freya, gave a speech about being in the first year group and her love of the buildings. It was far beyond the years of a Year 8 student and highlighted another aspect of Academy life which is star ng to come into its own: the Oratory specialism. Amongst several new ini a ves this year (and if your child hasn’t shown you their Oracy/Oratory passport yet, do please take a look, it’s in their planner), perhaps the most exci ng is The Big Debate. Intended to boost students’ confidence in public speaking whilst also introducing them to current affairs, The Big Debate involves all Year 8s, every Friday, deba ng an issue which has recently been in the news. We have been treated to passionate and eloquent arguments, and perhaps the most impressive aspect has been how involved students have been from the floor. Page 5 Science Art Page 6 MVPA friends group - Winter Fair Page 7 CSD Diary Dates Student Parliament Page 8 Music news Page 9 Music news contd….. Trips Page 10 Sports news Performances of another kind, led by the inimitable Ms Black, have given our many talented musicians a chance to shine in the half-termly concerts which have taken place in the chapel. More details are inside, so I shall confine myself to thanking the parents and carers who came and supported the students. I know you will agree there has been a great deal of talent on show, and how wonderful it is to see events taking place in that beau ful space. Huge thanks must also go to the MVPA Friends Group for organising such a brilliant Winter Fair. It was the first large event that the group have put on and involved months of hard work and planning. To see students, parents and residents joining in with the games and ac vi es really showed how the Academy is becoming part of the local community, and long may it con nue. For any parents or carers looking to join the Friends Group, they are at [email protected]. Looking forward, the next significant event on the horizon is for our Year 8s, as they begin the process of choosing their op on subjects. This involves taking up more contact hours in op on subjects like Music, Drama or Compu ng, as well as the chance to study new subjects like Psychology, Economics and Sociology. The process of introducing students to the new subjects and suppor ng them in the decision of which op ons to choose and which subjects to discon nue is one that will be done over a period of months and will fully involve parents. It will mark the beginning, in Year 9, of their GCSE courses – important qualifica ons which are currently more demanding than ever. Page 11 Sports news contd….. Page 12 Library news Finally, I would like to thank you all for your support throughout the term and, on behalf of all of us at the Academy, wish you a res ul and happy break. Best wishes, Mr N Rutherford Page 2| Victoria Mossbournian| December 2015 Pastoral successes and reminders A endance 7 CICERO contd…. For Remembrance Day on 11th November, a select group of the students made and sold poppy cookies to members of staff at Mossbourne Victoria Park in order to raise money for The Poppy Day Appeal. Aztec Hot chocolate The Exhibi on Reviewed by Mia Perez (7 Angelou) The Fashion Journalism enrichment group visited the Dressed by Angel’s exhibi on in November at The Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane. Arranged in date order, the costumes lead us through the early Victorian era right through to the present day. These unique costumes were from famous TV shows like Downtown Abbey, musicals like Wicked and films like Titanic. Some were even worn by famous singers and actors such as Paloma Faith, Rihanna and Kanye West. We all enjoyed it very much because it was fun whilst also being educa onal. I saw many costumes that I recognised from films and shows. Amber Saadna from 7 Cicero said, “I thought it was amazing how they managed to make so many dis nc ve costumes”. The Grand Opening of MVPA Year 7 ‐ Girls’ Netball Team Before the opening ceremony of the school, the choir, chamber orchestra and some soloists performed in the auditorium to very special guests including the Mayor of Hackney, building contractors and architects who had helped to design the Academy. Page 10| Victoria Mossbournian| December 2015 Sports News Cross Country Following an outstanding debut, Tegan-Diaz McDonagh has become a regular in the team and has since consistently demonstrated self-confidence and a compe ve desire during matches. She most definitely is destroying any prevailing stereotypical views regarding women in football and has helped promote girls’ football within the Academy. Theo Grandorge’s consistency also earns him recogni on - he really has been world class in between the s cks, pulling off some incredible acroba c saves, maintaining posi vity within the camp. The team have worked hard at crea ng a posi ve culture within the football squad both on and off the pitch and with con nued progress, the team is shaping up for a successful future. A er a tough start to their football season, the Year 8 team are star ng to find their feet. Jean Ntaka has been instrumental so far this season asser ng himself on the pitch and boos ng moral in the changing room. Page 11| Victoria Mossbournian| December 2015 Sports News con nued Ellen McGann (VC) Santana McKen-Clarke Tia Morrison Julia Tran Sophia Tran Jaida-Phoenix Thwaites-Brown Lena Westerburg-Burr Netball This netballing season was always going to be a big one for us given that the current Year 8 team are the current champions of Hackney. We really have used this to our advantage in the sense that we have had the Year 7 girls training with the Year 8s each week. Not only has this helped the Year 7s to learn the game a lot quicker (given that some of them had never played netball before), more importantly it has nurtured a fantas c team spirit. Effec ve team Captains have also aided this. Tahlia Deaner’s consistently posi ve a tude has earned her the captain’s armband for the Year 7s… Well done! Aleyna Kuran can always be heard on the netball court mo va ng her teammates which is why she has been ever-present in the team and of course the Year 8 Captain. Table Tennis Club Following the arrival of 6 indoor tables as a kind dona on from Hackney Council, we have been able to run our very first ever table tennis club here at the Academy. Each Monday, over 30 students have had the privilege to work with a professional table tennis coach learning to master the skills that are central to this intricate sport. Both the Year 7 and Year 8 netball teams have excelled on the netball court so far this year. Both teams have excelled during the group stage, and have booked their place in the knock out stages next year. We wish them the best of luck! We look forward to further developing this club next year as we aim to par cipate in external tournaments as well as set up in-school tournaments. In September the Library re-opened in the Huguenot building, formerly a French Protestant Hospital.
The students are able to read and research books in this historic panelled room with beau ful Victorian features. BookBuzz With support from the Book Trust, each student in year 7 will be given a free book of their choice by the end of this term from the school library. In October the students were shown reviews, by authors and other students, of twelve books. They were given some excellent choices. I hope that they enjoy reading their chosen book over the Christmas break. Author Visit It was a real privilege when, author of Trash, Andy Mulligan visited the school on 20th October 2015; par cularly as the students are actually studying this novel in English. Andy Mulligan discussed his wri ng and research techniques including answering ques ons from our budding authors in our spectacular chapel. He then read an extract from his new novel Liquidator which the students thoroughly enjoyed. The students were able to purchase this, autographed book via Parent Pay. Book Monitors The Book Monitors started their du es in the library. They have taken on the role with great zeal and have been busy adding stock to our growing collec on. They are here to help and support fellow students; please ask them if you require any assistance. Four of the monitors from Year 7, from le , Izabelle Wilson, Sibel Cecen, Alexia Bent and Nashanna Campbell Book Fair and Book Club The Book Fair, which took place in June, raised £347; the Book Club, which took place in November raised £60 .
