Nurses are important to the medical field. Kayla Roach Giorgi Topouria SCM 205 October 14, 2015 Roach 2 Have you every thought about what a nurse does for you when you are in a hospital, or just visiting for a check up? The Definition of a nurse according to Webster Dictionary is, “A person who is trained to care for sick or injured people and who usually works in a hospital or doctor`s office” (Merriam-­‐Wbster Dictionary). Nurse are the first people we see when going to the doctors they weigh us check out blood presser and pulse, with this in mind why did the View make such awful and derotory statements toward Miss Colorado. They said and I quote, “Why
does she have a doctor's stethoscope on?" Behar asked before Collins clarified, “She
helps patients with Alzheimer's, which I know is not funny, but I swear you had to see
it.” This one statement threw many nurses up in arms show and tweeted that nurse use the
stethoscope to listen to patcanet and it is not just for doctors to use.
Moving forward many of the View`s Advertisers are pulling out there support for
the View because of the huge backlash against Co- Host Joy Behar mocking Miss
America Nurse Monologue. Two of the major companies that have pulled away so far are
Johnson and Johnson and Eggland’s Best.
Johnson and Johnson has moved away from this so that they wont get a bad name
being associated with the View. Johnson and Johnson released a statement saying,
“Johnson & Johnson values and appreciates nurses and we respect the critical role they
play in our healthcare system. We disagree with recent comments on daytime television
about the nursing profession, and we have paused our advertising accordingly,” they also
went on to say, “We're committed to raising the level of awareness about the skill and
knowledge that the profession requires, and we send our thanks today and every day to
the millions of nurses who touch the lives of patients and their families. #NursesHeal
Roach 3 #NursesUnite” (Corinthois). Johnson and Johnson have used this scandle to help premote
there business and sepreate them selves from the controvers. To prove that Johnson and
Johnson support nures they released a comerial that feature nureses. The message of the
add went as so, “It takes a special person to be a nurse. It's a perfect day for us to share
one of our most-loved ads that celebrates the care, the healing touch, and the commitment
of nurses everywhere. #NursesUnite #NursesHeal” (Corinthois).
For Egglands best they took to Facebook to post a similar statement that goes like
this, “Eggland's Best appreciates nurses and values the important role they play in family
health. In light of the comments about the nursing profession recently made on daytime
television we will no longer be advertising on the show in question. Eggland's Best
believes in providing consumers the freshest, best tasting and most nutritious egg
possible and we thank the millions of nurses across the country who work to improve the
lives of their patients and families” (Corinthois).
As far as the View goes about fixing the situation they are in they had Behar
apologize on the broadcast. Her appologee goes like so, “I didn't know what the hell I
was talking about,”said Behar, 72, who also said that she was “just not paying attention”
and didn't realize Johnson was a nurse, thinking perhaps the pageant contestant was in
costume (Corinthois).
After Behar`s apology the American Nurses Association issued a statement that
talked about Behar`s “disturbing” decision to use “her national platform and influence to
mock Miss America contestant Kelly Johnson” (Corinthois). They were however pleased
that she apologized for her rude behavior.
When looking at this scandal you can see there are many elements to it from the
Roach 4 actual show to the supporters of the show. When someone says something on national
television today it can spread like wild fire, and affect more than just the show, but also
the supports of it. This is a great example of which all can be affected by negative things
being said on a show. I believe Johnson and Johnson, as done a great job and turning the
situation around to better help their company. I also believe the View needs to do more
than just apologize. All in all this is a great example of many different public relations
people coming to help save the face of their company.
