Learning Outcomes
Trace the pathway that mature spermatozoa take from site of production to ejaculation, naming each
organ or gland they pass through (or near) along the way.
Trace the pathway that oocytes take from site of ovulation to implantation, naming each organ they
pass through along the way.
Compare and contrast spermatogenesis & spermiogenesis with oogenesis, including:
o Timing of mitosis and meiotic events in gamete production
o Total number of gametes produced over a lifetime
o Number of functional gametes that result from one gametogenic cell
Explain the roles of the known secretions produced by each male accessory gland.
Compare the functions of cells of the testes with those of the ovaries:
o Identify cells with analogous functions
o Describe their general jobs and the hormones they secrete
Explain how sex hormones influence oogenesis and the major events of both the follicular and the
luteal phases of the ovarian cycle.
o Predict how alterations of various hormone levels will influence subsequent events of both phases
of the ovarian cycle.
Explain how sex hormones influence spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis.
o Predict how alterations of various hormone levels will influence subsequent events in
spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis.
