in the process, buying into operations which are an
optimal fit for the original business: a rare opportunity indeed for any company. And it was an oppor-

The objective – to improve market positions in a variety of
business areas and to make the new Kaba a profitable global
security group – was achieved in record time.

However, it was not till after the merger that the real work
began – that of merging Unican and Kaba. The project
bore the promising name “Turbo”. The first step was to put
a new organizational structure in place; then the “Turbo”
project was broken down into 81 different sub-projects, and
after a total of 900 days the process of integration was
complete.

A study in
convenience
Universities are enhancing security for all their students and
staff without impinging on their
freedom of movement.
Every university plays an important role in the social and economic fortunes of its location. The economic impetus, for
instance, which a university brings to the surrounding area is
considerable. Little surprise, then, that regions compete
fiercely when it comes to their universities. The requirements
which the universities have to meet are constantly increasing.
Firstly, because the number of students is always expanding,
and, secondly, because the faculties need more space and themselves make serious and very varied demands. So new buildings are constructed or additional facilities are created – and
the campus grows organically into an expansive complex of
teaching and research buildings, residential space for students
and infrastructure as well as sports and leisure facilities.
A lot of these buildings will need specific security arrangements.
Research facilities, for instance, where the valuable results of
years of work are stored, or laboratories containing hazardous
chemicals. Add to these the server rooms, the laptops, medical

SRD Vision sensor system
The SRD Vision optical sensor system combines efficient access
control with convenience of entry. It enables reliable separation
of individual users even in spacious revolving doors with diameters of up to 2.5 m. In conjunction with Kaba’s safety locking
mechanism, SRD Vision provides effective access security while
at the same time preventing people from getting trapped in the
door. Complete with full lighting in the chamber, the sensor system is not dependent on an external light source and can therefore be used in all light conditions. It has adjustable separation
parameters and can be maintained remotely. The SRD Vision sensor system will be on the market from the second half of 2011.

Compact reader
Read and control unit in one: Kaba’s new compact reader with
quickwire technology enables even easier installation at low
cost. With quickwire, all the contacts are wired directly to the
base plate, a job which can be done previously by the electricians on site. The unit housing with its integrated electronics
can then be installed on the base plate in a matter of minutes.
Customers also enjoy protection for the capital they have
invested if they want to switch from stand-alone to networked
online access control. The compact reader is supported both
by the Kaba evolo and by the Kaba exos access management
systems. The product recently received the coveted iF product
design award 2011.

Silca Diamond
The new Silca Diamond key collection is resplendent with its
eye-catching designs and crystals set into the top of the key.
Customers currently have twelve different patterns to choose
from to suit their own temperament and predilections. For
rock fans, for instance, there is an electric guitar design, or a
psychedelic pattern for ’70s fans. New patterns are continuously introduced exclusively to suit the customer’s own specific wishes or trends. Thus, a key becomes a lifestyle object
in its own right, and this is also reflected in the individual
packaging used. The Diamond collection is part of Silca’s Art
Keys product portfolio; examples of other lines are the Simpsons collection with scenes from the popular television series,
and the city collection displaying landmarks from the world’s
major cities or best landscapes.

Kaba c-lever compact
Innovative, digital, integrated door furniture solution for interior
doors, with a high-class design: as a rosette fitting, Kaba’s new
c-lever compact enables complete separation of door handle
and locking cylinder. And thanks to an imaginative clip-in system, assembly is so simple that only two screws are required.
The cost-effectiveness of the solution also derives from the fact
that the existing cylinder (along with its protective rosette) does
not need to be replaced. If required, the electronic, digital access
authorization for doors equipped with the Kaba c-lever compact
can be integrated into an online access control system straightforwardly and at no additional cost. Standardized screw fitting
makes a range of applications possible, for instance in glass or
wooden doors. Users are guided discreetly through by visual
and sound signals.

B-web 93 00 biometric identification
Time recording using only your finger – the new B-web 93 00
makes it possible. The integrated biometric identification unit
provides for convenient operation and swift booking. The optical sensor links to an internal database for up to 5,000 staff,
and identification lasts less than a second. For increased biometric requirements, there is an alternative biometric sensor
enabling enhanced approvals (PIV-IQS with FBI certification and
template analysis approved by FIPS 201). Combined with the
biometrics option of the B-COMM Java integration platform,
both an identification and a verification solution are possible.
B-COMM Java looks after enrolment at the PC, the administration of templates and their distribution to the terminals and the
writing of data to staff badges.

Efficient, precise and affordable: Those elements make the new
057HS key cutting machine for sidewinder keys an essential
addition to the Kaba Ilco product portfolio. Popular on European and Asian branded vehicles, the sidewinder style of key
has developed an increasing presence in the North American
market. Kaba Ilco meets this customer demand with its latest
addition to the portfolio – 057HS – offering functionality, ease of
operation and accuracy at an affordable price point. The Ilco
057HS is a three axis key duplication machine that is operated
manually. Designed by the engineering staff at Kaba Ilco, the
machine is assembled in the Rocky Mount facility (NC/USA) and
targeted to the North American locksmith, hardware and automotive market.

B-web 92 50 Power over Ethernet
The new access control manager B-web 92 50 is not only
itself operated via PoE (Power over Ethernet, standard IEEE
802.3af), but in turn also supplies power to the readers and
door openers which are connected up to it. With this new
type of installation, there is now a clear dividing line in the
IT structure between the electricity network service provider and the internal technology. The network service provider furnishes the PoE connection around which the internal technology is put in place. Thanks to an automated
launch system, the access control management operation
is installed quickly and efficiently. In order to protect the
system from tampering or sabotage, it is generally installed
in secure areas.

What is a
“green” lock?
“We have developed
one of the most
efficient and versatile electronic
locksets available.”
Michael Kincaid, General Manager,
Kaba Ilco Corp., Winston Salem (NC/USA)
How it works
How does this electronic pushbutton lock provide the required
power exactly? When the outside door lever is turned, this
activates internal gears, which turn a built-in generator
(stepper motor), which creates the power needed to operate
the lock’s electronics. The power generated is stored in
a bank of capacitors. We call this innovative power generation
“PowerStar technology”.
As an example, the user would walk up to the door, turn the
lever, and a green light will then flash, indicating the lock is
powered up. Next, the access code is pressed on the keypad,
the light will flash green again, indicating the code is valid —
and a brief motor noise will be heard, thus indicating the lock
has been unlocked. The user may now turn the lever to retract
the latch and open the door.
