Wednesday 13th August
‘Shifty’ could be used to describe today’s wind conditions, but much less refined
terms were used by most of the helms on the water! With a line set from U the
classes all started their first race with 8 as the windward mark. A small shift in
the wind though meant that the courses became a little biased leaving a one
tack leg to the windward mark…but with 4 Saltonstalls on the water, who would
have expected anything else!?!
Cruiser ‘B’ Class
Today’s race saw the class ‘beat’ out to
8, take in G and back to U. As the
wind shifted the beat ended up being
from G to U leaving the boats all
guessing what the wind would do next.
As it was, Nemo and No Compromise
leading the class around the course.
With times corrected on PY it was
Dilemma, Starchick and Nemo who
took the top 3 prizes. Today’s results
see Starchick sitting in top spot, 3
points clear of Dilemma and 7 points
from Nemo.
Squib ‘C’ Class
Yet again the squib class showed
their abilities with cracking starts
in both races, leaving the races
wide open all the way to the first
windward marks. In race 7 Ghost
took an early lead although
Seahose, aLCHEMY and Perkers all
battled to claim the lead. However
Ghost hung on to keep hold of the
lead with Perkers claiming 2nd and
aLCHEMY 3rd. In race 8 the wind
had shifted to blow from the East
and 9 was used for the windward mark. After a very close start Perkers took
advantage as the wind shifted even further round to the North, allowing them to
lay the mark much earlier than anticipated. As they rounded in 1st; Ghost,
Seahorse and aLCHEMY all gave chase but couldn’t close the gap enough,
allowing Perkers to take the 2nd win of the week. Today’s results sees Ghost
ahead by 8 points with only 3 points separating Perkers and aLCHEMY in 2nd and
3rd respectively.
YOD ‘E’ Class
In the YOD class it was business as
usual in race 7 as all boats made a
clean start but were also affected
badly by the wind shift. Blackie and
Mona made their way to the front of
the fleet and stayed there until the end
of the race with Blackie taking their 4th
win of the week. This time though it
was Patience who managed to sneak in
for 3rd place. Race 8 however was a
much more open affair with Iolanthe
and Mona both OCS at the start and
having to correct themselves before
competing in the race. With only YoYo and Patience both opting for the extreme
left-hand-side of the course, things were going to be interesting at the
windward mark, and as it was YoYo rounded in 2nd with a close battle for 3rd –
6th!As the fleet made their way down the final spinnaker leg YoYo showed good
form to hold on to 3rd place (ruling themselves out of the champagne prize!)
behind Yilt in 2nd.
Contessa ‘B’ Class
The Contessas followed the Same course as the B class and also hit the same
wind shifts, although they at least got a warning by watching what had
happened to the 3 fleets before them. The class made their way to the
windward mark and found that someone had beaten Tessa to the windward
mark (but I cant tell you who it was because I couldn’t see!!) As the boats
made their way around the course I do know that the order changed and by the
end of the 1st lap Tessador led from Tessa. At the end of the race Tessa led
across the line with
Tessador in 2nd and
Contessina in 3rd.
