Bones of the Body

English for living in the UK
Bones of the Body
At a glance...
Objective
This class is aimed at familiarising new arrivals to the UK with a difficult, but important area of vocabulary. This course will cover the names of bones that are
used regularly in medical environments.
1. Warm Up (15 minutes)
This is a short exercise to get everyone in the class talking and to flag up any students who may need extra support with their reading, or pronunciation.
2. Vocabulary (10 minutes)
This gives a quick run-through of the bones we are hoping to learn, using some
psychological techniques to help the words stick in the mind. Feel free to play it
twice at this stage.
3. Exercise One (10 minutes)
Hand out the sentence sheet and ask the students to find the correct words from
their vocabulary list to fill in each blank. Once complete, go through the answers.
4. Exercise Two (15 minutes)
Hand out the picture cards and ask the students to name the bones shown, then
go through them one by one, asking one student per card to read out their answer.
5. Roundup (10 minutes)
Watch the video again and take any questions.
Lesson Plan
1. Warm Up
Split the class up into pairs or small groups and give one person from each group a
picture from a magazine. This person must describe it to the others, who have to
draw what they hear.
Have fun with the class, getting people to show their drawings, then comparing
them with the original.
2. Vocabulary
Write the following words on the board:
Skull, Eye Socket, Cheek Bone, Jaw Bone, Vertebra, Vertebrae, Spine,
Shoulder Blade, Collar Bone, Rib, Rib Cage, Hip Bone, Femur, Knee Cap,
Shin Bone
Then watch the video (feel free to watch it through twice, as there is a lot of
