What could have been better? The sun was shining, the beer flowing, food from all corners of the world & people came in their droves. The JKs & CHAIN Summer Street Party
had all the ingredients of a successful event including some star quality thanks to Claire
King (Emmerdale, Bad Girls & Strictly Come Dancing), a live broadcast from Ace FM &
local rock bands – Costa Rock & Im & Er. Our local media did us proud by ensuring
maximum coverage & over €1500 was raised for the new project which aims to provide
a fully equipped vet van for the Malaga Province.
Let’s hope our CHAIN vet Wayne proves more of a hit
in the van than pushing one as seen by the results of
the strongest man competition! If you would like to
help with fundraising for CHAIN’s Vet in a Van project
please contact Bev on 651 444 908 .
We need your help & ideas to get this on the road.

CHAIN highlights a case of cruelty & a dilemma any of us could face
We hear about so many cases of cruelty to animals that we can almost become immune
to them. Then along comes a story that reminds you of a situation that any of us could
find ourselves in & why local charities like CHAIN are needed. Coin residents Sue & Alan
found themselves with a dilemma when their neighbour threatened to denounce them
as he accused their dogs of attacking his cat. Although able to account for the whereabouts of their dogs at the time the alleged attack took place, Alan & Sue sensed that
the situation was urgent & rushed to his house to find the poor cat lying in a pool of
blood. Without a second thought, they scooped her up
& rushed her to the new vet, Alpha Animals, in Coin.
Sandra the vet was not sure if she would survive &
operated immediately. They had to remove an eye it
was so badly infected, her jaw was broken & she had
internal injuries but she is a fighter & brave enough to
survive the horrendous incident. The vet stated that in
no way were the injuries as a result of a dog attack –
she had either been kicked or hit by a car. Appalled at
the nature of the injuries they even publicised the
case on the local TV station Canal Sur. The operation
& post care was costly &, with no sign of the owner,
CHAIN stepped in to fund the vet bills. Alpha Animals also very kindly reduced the cost
substantially due to the special circumstances. Sue & Alan named the cat Fortuna –
meaning “For Always”. She is currently living with them, safe, secure & happy at having
a second chance at life. We would like to thank Alpha Animals for their support for Fortuna.
Message of the Month...
"Women & cats will do as they please, & men &
dogs should relax & get used to the idea."
-- Robert A. Heinlein
I so agree! If you have a favourite animal anecdote, quote
or funny story, tell us all about it & help keep our readers
smiling.

Living the High Life in Hampstead
Julietta - A good news story!
Found as a pup with her mum & brothers on the
streets & then she spent the rest of her time in a
rescue centre. But Tania, a huge Podenco fan, rescued her. They found a home for her brother & couldn't bear to leave her on her own in the SOS shelter.
They knew she would have no chance of re-homing in
Spain & she would have lived all her life in the shelter or been put to sleep.
In the UK she has been adopted by a family in Hampstead & is being spoilt rotten.
Julietter is a Podenco Cross (pharaoh hound mix). Her regal looks means we think she
will do very well in posh Hampstead!

rescue animal why not visit

Sid The Sunbather!
Did you know? The Pharaoh Hound is one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds in the
world. As the name suggests they are thought to have originated in Ancient Egypt although for the past 2000 years they have been native to the isle of Malta.
Strange but True...Spaniel Adopts Owl
An orphaned baby eagle owl has been adopted by a Springer
spaniel. Bramble found a new mum in Sophie the spaniel when
she went to live at a bird of prey rescue centre, reports The Sun.
The unlikely pair have become inseparable & Sophie even gives
Bramble a daily wash by licking her. Bramble likes the attention
so much she now insists on flying to Sophie to be spruced up.
Sharon Bindon, 43, who runs the centre at Liskeard, Cornwall,
said: "When Bramble arrived she had no feathers & had to be
kept in the house. On her first day Sophie cleaned her as they sat
on the settee. "Every day since Bramble has had to be let out of her cage to be washed.
She has the cleanest beak & feathers in the country."

Animal Tip of the Month
Hot Dogs Anyone?
Be extra careful with any
dogs more prone to over–
heating in this really hot
weather. This includes
dogs that are overweight,
older or have lung or heart
disease as their respiratory
system is already suppressed. Those of a
brachycephalic (squashed
nose) head shape such as
bulldogs, pugs & shihtzus
also need to be kept cool
for the same reason.
