Plymouth History
Festival 2017
6 May to 4 June
Discover Plymouth’s history and heritage
www.historyfestival2017.wordpress.com
Welcome to the Plymouth History Festival
I’m really looking forward to this year’s
Plymouth History Festival. This is the fifth
year in a row that our month long celebration
of the city’s fantastic heritage has taken
place and it’s a very proud feeling.
As always, the team at Plymouth City
Council’s Arts and Heritage Service are
extremely grateful to all the organisations,
societies and individuals who have
contributed to yet another packed
programme, which includes exhibitions
and displays, guided walks and tours,
talks and presentations, music, film
and performance, special events and
family activities.
featuring original pieces by award-winning
artists Frances Scott and Bryony Gillard.
One of the things I’m particularly excited
about is ‘Ropewalks’ - a series of theatrical
walking tours which will bring the stories of
the Barbican and Sutton Harbour to life.
Five years on the Plymouth History Festival is
still as strong as ever. I hope you enjoy being
part of this year’s events and make the most
of our annual celebration of the wonderful
heritage this city has to offer.
Nicola Moyle
Head of Arts and Heritage
Plymouth City Council
There’s a real variety on offer this year
with topics such as the 1950s, Crime
and Punishment, the Blitz and Sir Francis
Chichester. There are plenty of opportunities
to look around some of the city’s most
historic buildings and gardens and enjoy
learning more about subjects as diverse as
‘Slander and Insults in Elizabethan Devon’,
Winston Churchill’s ‘Secret Army’, Devonport
Dockyard, historic Plympton, artist Jack
Pickup and ‘Darwin, Dinosaurs and the
Plymouth Athenaeum’.
This year’s programme includes a range of
special events, kicking off with our wellestablished ‘Local Studies Day’ – and who
wouldn’t want to see displays of firepower at
Crownhill Fort, knights in armour at Plympton
Priory and live music by ‘The Revolvers’ at
the New Continental Hotel?
I’m really interested in the premiere of
the 2017 Peninsula Arts film commission

they argue that everything has a
history. The history of the itch, of
crawling, of clouds or of lightning, of
zombies, zebras, holes, perfume or
rubbish – they all have fascinating
histories of their own that can
change the way you think about the
past and present.

BRITAIN IN THE FIFTIES:

Throughout the month (runs until 3 June)
Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm
Come and see a vision of the country from 60

both inside and outside the home, with a diverse
range of objects including furnishings, fabrics,
ceramics, cutlery, magazines, machinery and the
iconic Vespa. It also includes objects and moving
images from the city’s collections.

ABRAM GAMES & THE FESTIVAL OF
BRITAIN SYMBOL
Plymouth Athenaeum, Derry’s Cross,
Plymouth PL1 2SW
Tuesday 30 May, 1.10pm to 2pm
In 1948, two years after being de-mobbed,
‘Official War Poster Artist’, Abram Games, won the
competition to design the symbol for the Festival
of Britain. This was to be a significant event in
his six-decade career, establishing him as one of
twentieth century Britain’s most respected graphic
designers. The ‘Britannia’ emblem was ubiquitous,
versatile and memorable. The same can be said
of its designer’s work. In 1951 Games’s Festival
contribution helped to give colourless post-war
Britain a much-deserved ‘tonic to the nation’. As
the city hosts a nationally touring exhibition about
‘Britain in the Fifties: Design and Aspiration’, his
daughter, Naomi, will tell the story of the design of
the symbol, drawing on Games’ personal archive.

AUDIO TRAIL
The Old Jewish Cemetery, Lambhay Hill,

Sunday 7, 14, 21 and 28 May and 4 June,
11am-4pm (last entry at 3pm)
Tours take place at quarter past, half past,
quarter to and on the hour
Located on Plymouth’s historic Hoe, in the
shadow of The Citadel, lies a hidden secret: The
Old Jewish Cemetery. Contained within high
stone walls it has always remained hidden from
public view. The only clue to its existence is an
insignificant door. With the aid of funding from
Vital Sparks and Drakes Foundation, recorded
with Stage Technical Services and hosted by
the Plymouth Hebrew Congregation, an audio
trail has been created in the garden cemetery
by Ruth Mitchell and Derek Frood, aka Ripple.
It brings to life the lives of those buried within
this hidden gem. In 1740 this plot was a family
garden; today it is a calm oasis that hides a
wealth of history and culture.
Bring your smart phone and headphones, use the
MP3 players available on the day or download from
https://soundcloud.com/ripple-theatre Please
note: The Cemetery includes entry and exit steps
with uneven terrain throughout and therefore is not
suitable for those with limited mobility. For those

Making History
Plymouth’s journey towards the creation
of a brand new cultural and heritage
attraction, currently known as the
Plymouth History Centre, is getting
closer by the day.
We are now in the delivery phase of
the project and it’s an exciting time.
Building and construction work has
commenced on site and things are
really starting to progress.
A partnership between Plymouth City
Council, the University of Plymouth, the
South West Film and Television Archive
and the South West Image Bank, the
Plymouth History Centre is scheduled
to open in spring 2020 as part of the
Mayflower 400 commemorations.
We have also been lucky enough to
confirm or secure an amazing amount
of funding support over the last 12
months from the Heritage Lottery Fund,
Plymouth City Council, Arts Council
England, the Coastal Communities Fund,
the Garfield Weston Foundation, the
University of Plymouth and the Wolfson
Foundation. We are very grateful to these
funders and everyone who is supporting
the project for their belief in what we are
trying to achieve.
The project will bring the city’s most
significant heritage assets on to one site and
showcase permanent collections on a bigger
and better platform than ever before. It will
also create new visual arts spaces, academic
and research facilities – all of which will be
boosted by ambitious exhibition, event and
education programmes.

While the Museum and Art Gallery building
