HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION Emergency Overview: WARNING! MAY CAUSE IRRITATION TO SKIN, EYES, RESPIRATORY TRACT, AND/OR GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT. MAY BE HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED, INHALED, OR ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN. SAFETY RATINGS: Health: 2, Moderate Reactivity: 1, Slight Flammability: 0, None Contact: 2, Moderate Protective Equipment: Safety Glasses, Lab Coat or Apron, Gloves Storage Code: Green: General Potential Health Effects: INHALATION: Causes irritation to the respiratory tract. Symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath. INGESTION: Causes irritation to the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. SKIN CONTACT: Causes irritation to skin. Symptoms include redness, itching, and pain. EYE CONTACT: Causes irritation, redness, and pain. POTENTIAL CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS: No information is available in our database regarding the effects of repeated or chronic exposure of this material in humans. MEDICAL CONDITIONS GENERALLY AGGRAVATED by EXPOSURE: Repeated or prolonged exposure is not known to aggravate medical condition. 4. FIRST AID MEASURES INHALATION: Remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If the victim is not breathing, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If irritation persists, get medical attention. INGESTION: Induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. SKIN CONTACT: Wash with mild soap and water. If irritation develops, get medical attention. EYE CONTACT: Check for and remove contact lenses. Immediately flush eyes with gentle but large stream of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. If irritation develops, get medical attention. Ammonium Chloride MSDS Effective Date: 11/18/2010 5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES NFPA RATINGS: Health: 2 Flammability: 0 Reactivity: 0 FIRE: Not considered to be a fire hazard. At fire temperatures ammonium chloride begins to corrode metals and may dissociate into ammonia and hydrogen chloride. Mixtures of about 16% to 25% (by volume) ammonia gas in air are flammable. EXPLOSION: Not considered to be an explosion hazard. FIRE EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Use any means suitable for extinguishing surrounding fire. SPECIAL INFORMATION: In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode. 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Remove all sources of ignition. Ventilate area of leak or spill. Isolate area of leak or spill. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as specified in the Exposure Control and Personal Protection Section 8. Pick up and place in a suitable container for reclamation or disposal, using a method that does not generate dust. 7. HANDLING and STORAGE Store in a cool, dry, ventilated area, away from flame, sources of ignition and heat. Keep containers tightly closed and upright. Protect from physical damage. Keep out of direct sunlight and separate from incompatible materials. Containers of this material may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues (dust, solids); observe all warnings and precautions listed for the product. Storage and use areas should be non-smoking. Wash thoroughly after handling. 8. EXPOSURE CONTROL and PERSONAL PROTECTION AIRBORNE EXPOSURE LIMITS: ACGIH (TLV): TWA: 10 (mg/m3) STEL: 20 (mg/m3) NIOSH TWA: 10 (mg/m3) STEL: 20 (mg/m3) OSHA (PEL) TWA: 10 (mg/m3) STEL: 20 (mg/m3) VENTILATION SYSTEM: In general, dilution ventilation is a satisfactory health hazard control for this substance. However, if conditions of use create discomfort to the worker, a local exhaust system should be considered. PERSONAL RESPIRATORS (NIOSH) APPROVED: If the exposure limit is exceeded and engineering controls are not feasible, a half face piece particulate respirator (NIOSH type N95 or better filters) may be worn for up to ten times the exposure limit or the maximum use concentration specified by the appropriate regulatory agency or respirator supplier, whichever is lowest.. A full-face piece particulate respirator (NIOSH type N100 filters) may be worn up to 50 times the exposure limit, or the maximum use concentration specified by the appropriate regulatory agency, or respirator supplier, whichever is lowest. If oil particles (e.g. lubricants, cutting fluids, glycerin, etc.) are present, use a NIOSH type R or P filter. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face piece positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator. WARNING: Air-purifying respirators do not protect workers in oxygen-deficient atmospheres. SKIN PROTECTION: Wear protective clothing, gloves, lab coat or apron, as appropriate, to prevent skin contact. EYE PROTECTION: Use chemical safety glasses or goggles. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick drench facilities in work area. 9. STABILITY and REACTIVITY STABILITY: Stable under ordinary conditions of use and storage. HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Involvement in a fire causes decomposition to form hydrogen chloride and ammonia. HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Will not occur. INCOMPATIBILITIES: Concentrated acids, strong bases, lead and silver salts, potassium chlorate, ammonium nitrate, bromine trifluoride, bromine pentafluoride, and iodine heptafluoride. Ammonium chloride reacts explosively with potassium chlorate or bromine trifluoride, and violently with bromide pentafluoride, ammonium compounds, nitrates, and iodine heptafluoride. Explosive nitrogen trichloride may result from reaction of ammonium chloride and hydrogen cyanide. CONDITIONS to AVOID: Moisture, heat, flames, ignition sources, and incompatibles. 11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION TOXICOLOGICAL DATA: Oral rat LD50 : 1650 mg/kg CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS: May affect genetic material (mutagenic) CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: Not known to cause cancer. 12.
