SOLUTION BRIEF ORIGIN ACCELERATION Unblock performance bottlenecks in your origin servers, NAS or network WhY ACCELERATE YOUR ORIGIN? Origin systems are used to process and store copies of an operator’s entire catalogue of TV content. Most of this content is usually delivered to the viewer by a CDN. This might be a public CDN service or, if the operator wishes to control the quality of the delivery and benefit from economies of scale, they will more likely build out their own purpose-built TV CDN. THE SOURCE OF THE BOTTLENECKS All content that is not already cached in the CDN needs to be read-out from the origin system. For large amounts of viewers and content, even with a highly efficient CDN with a high cache-hit ratio, this can put a great deal of strain of the origin system, and it can reach limits in its capacity. This can be due to one of three issues: 1. The origin servers may be operating at their maximum performance 2. The NAS may have sufficient storage capacity, but the servers may have insufficient read-out capacity to meet the demands of the viewers’ requests for uncached content 3. The network connection to the origin location may be congested HOW TO ACCELERATE YOUR ORIGIN SYSTEM Each of these problems can be solved by deploying one or more high performance TV servers between the origin and the CDN. The TV servers provide an extra layer of caching for the most highly demanded content that is being served by the origin system – content not held within the CDN. The cached content is managed using an algorithm that automatically discards the least-recently viewed content in favor of retaining more popular content. So now the majority of content is read-out from these servers rather than the congested origin system. A single Edgeware TV Server can read-out TV content at either 20Gbps or 80Gbps, depending on model (4020 or 4080 TV Server). Content can be read-out on-the-fly as soon as it is available in the NAS, without having to wait for the whole file to be downloaded into the TV Server’s memory, eliminating latency. The servers can also support a mix of RTSP and HTTP services. Multiple servers can be used to build highly scalable and resilient origin systems. To solve congestion caused by insufficient network bandwidth, these TV servers can be placed in a different location to the origin system – either somewhere with greater connectivity, or distributed across several locations to spread network demand across multiple sites. 2 EDGEWARE SOLUTION GUIDE: ORIGIN ACCELERATION Bottlenecks unblocked from existing origin system ORIGIN ORIGIN ACCELERATION LAYER ‘Heavy lifting’ done by TV Servers Existing TV CDNs can now read-out content from the origin acceleration layer CDNs BENEFITS OF ORIGIN ACCELERATION Using Edgeware’s origin acceleration solution brings a range of benefits, ORIGIN ACCELERATION CASE STUDY: including: Remove bottlenecks in the performance of your existing origin system A large cable company in the Americas was experiencing TCP retransmissions due to congestion in its origin system, which was affecting its viewers’ ability to access content. It was faced with the expensive and disruptive option of upgrading its origin infrastructure. Instead it deployed 4 Edgeware TV Servers in front of its origin to act as HTTP caches and to stream its RTSP traffic, solving its problem easily and at relatively low cost. Extend the value of the existing investments in network, NAS and origin servers Minimize service disruption Scale to huge volumes of content and viewers Support any mix of RTSP and HTTP services Deterministic low latency performance, unaffected by traffic mix Low power consumption, with less than 100W per server, and little space required at only 1RU per server The origin acceleration TV servers can evolve into a full TV CDN, streaming content themselves, to further scale your delivery system and add greater control to the quality of the TV viewing experience www.edgeware.tv 3 STOCKHOLM HQ USA MEXICO HONG KONG Edgeware AB, HQ Mäster Samuelsg. 42 SE-111 21 Stockholm Sweden +46 736 126 840 [email protected] Edgeware, Inc. 200 E. 5th Ave., Ste. 125 Naperville, IL 60563 USA Toll Free Phone: +1 888 324-1970 [email protected] Edgeware Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra 193-802 Col.
