Monday 27th June 2016 Term 2 Week 9
From the Principal’s desk
Dear Parents and Caregivers
It is my wish for this community to have a vibrant, rural
area school.
We are moving in the right direction with the unique and
varied programmes that we offer. We have visitors
commenting on the positive and happy environment they
encounter. And we have it with many parents and
community members.
To engage our community to let these messages and
experiences spread further and attract roll growth we must
be a part of the picture. Just this week I have attended the
Community Work Group and the first Board of Trustees
meeting and been impressed by the ‘roll up our sleeves and
muck in’ attitude of rural NZ, Tuatapere.
There are plenty of events to come from these groups and
our school. I invite you to attend these to support, promote
and encourage each other and build towards the vision the
Board has for our school. That means as a community of
people. I still have wonderful memories as a kid in rural
Canterbury being a part of my community’s school and
painting the school library with the other families. Might be
time for an 80’s themed community picnic with three legged
races. I am a bit of gun at the egg and spoon race I warn
you.
Don’t underestimate your input. The students and teachers
are always encouraged by your attendance at events. I know
the teachers have collected the data required to determine
an OTJ (Overall Teacher Judgement) and reports will be
posted on the Friday. Following this there will be interviews
the next week. This is a time that children enjoy sharing and
discussing their progress and achievement. Please contact
the school to organise your appointment time.
Should you feel the need to meet with staff when it is not 3way conferences please contact the school to make an
appointment. I am aware that this 3-way format doesn’t
always suit the situation or detail that wish to be discussed.
I look forward to meeting many of you next Thursday
night.
Keep warm and well.
Kind regards
Deborah Dunlop-McClure

Te Anau
Room 3 went on a trip to Te Anau Tuesday 21 June as
part of their integrated learning unit. They learnt about
how The Department of Conservation is run and the
technology they use.
st
Department Of Conservation
Room 3 have been learning about the Department of Conservation in their integrated unit: Who's Got the Power! As part of
this they have seen the Kakapo and went to Te Anau to see how DOC works in and around the Fiordland Area and who has
the power to make decisions about who gets access to the resources and funding. Also part of this unit they have been
looking at the technology that is used by the department, what its purpose is, the positives and negatives how the technology
impacts on what they do and how it has changed. Here is a couple of examples they have done.
Incubator
By Kassadee Scott Yr 6
Good
It keeps the birds Warm.
Hatches the eggs
It's easy to use.
Bad
Could blow up.
It’s not their mother and it wouldn't keep them safe as
well as the mother does. It might power off. The birds are
getting too much human contact.
Temperature.
The temperature of the incubator is meant to stay between
99 and 102F. Not too cold not to hot!
Environment
It would be best if the incubator was is a cool dry place
and hidden from drafts.
How has the incubator changed over the years.
Around 4 years ago the takahe eggs stopped using the
incubator. They wanted to stop using the incubator
because the birds were having too much human contact
which means they were humanised. After the bird has
hatched from the egg and you need to feed them they need
to get mashed up dry food eg rolled out, corn flakes and
weetbix. For the drink that just need a wee glass of water.
The
Purposes
The incubator is meant to set the perfect environment for
the eggs because it keeps them safe from pests. Warm
from bad conditions like winter. Chicken eggs are
recorded to hatch within 21 days some. The incubator
keeps the eggs safe by 1. Keeping them warm 2. By stop
things falling on them.
Facts about the incubator
Incubators can be used in farm houses or chicken raising
farms. Some industrial incubators can hold 124,416 eggs.
Other incubators only hold a few eggs.
How does the incubator help
It helps them by making sure it is warm for them. Keeps
the eggs/birds safe.
Why was it made?
It was made because when they don't have a mother the
eggs can go into another home the incubator. It's a safer
place for them than their mother. It will be warmer than
their mother.
Bird Tracker
The purpose
The purpose of the tracker is to find birds and see if they’re sick
injured or dead or need looked after. They put it on the back because it
doesn’t fall of. It can see if the bird is nesting or feeding.
The positive and the negatives
The positive is it can see if birds are sick or dead. The negative that it
can fall off and run out battery and brake.
How it has changed over time
The tracker has changed from big to small. And nowadays we have airplanes to find the
birds. In the old days they walked to the birds. and they went from
big to small batteries and trackers. They have airplanes because
it’s faster.
How it works
It works with a transmitter that plugs in the aerial and beeps when
it is pointing at a tracker.

From The National Area Schools Team
A huge thank you to all of those people who have
supported us with fundraising over the last few weeks.
Thursday night 23rd June we had a great turn out for our
quiz night where many prizes were donated before we
even arrived that we are very appreciative of. We raised
about $600 which will help us out a lot. A big thank you to
Quinton at the Waiau Hotel as well for allowing us to hold
our quiz night there and for your kind donation.

Football
A great time was had at football on Wednesday 15 June at
Waiau. We had some busy students who came straight
from the badminton court in Invercargill to the field here
in Tuatapere. It wasn't a win against Central Southland
College but was a great game with some awesome
supporters. The CSC parents mentioned how great the
students of WAS are and how they have a 'don't give up
attitude'. Congratulations to Angela Pierce who received
today's player of the day.
