Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal Presentation About the Recipients Dr. Jenny Basran is the only Royal College Certified Geriatrician practicing in Saskatchewan. She is Head of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and an Assistant Professor with the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Medicine. Dr. Basran teaches medical students and residents, emphasizing cognitive impairment, impaired mobility, chronic and multiple disease management, and polypharmacy. She is a member of the Rural and Remote Memory Clinic and her research interests include dementia, interdisciplinary education and technology to assist people with dementia to remain independent in their homes. Dr. Basran has made a significant impact on improving the lives of people with dementia through her many contributions to the Alzheimer Society and the healthcare system: Dr. Basran has served on the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer Society. She conducts numerous lectures and presentations on dementia-related topics, as well as presenting at the Alzheimer Society Annual Provincial Conference. She is a Learning Series presenter via Telehealth on the topic of understanding dementia Dr. Basran acts as a medical advisor and media spokesperson for the Alzheimer Society on scientific and medical topics. She is the Program Head for the Geriatric Evaluation and Management Program at Saskatoon City Hospital. Dr. Andrew Kirk is a Professor and Head of Neurology at the University of Saskatchewan. He served six years as a board member for the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan. He received Honorary Life Membership in 2007 for his contributions and advisory roles at the Society. His current research initiative helped establish a Rural and Remote Memory Clinic using Telehealth technology. Dr. Kirk has also made a significant impact on improving the lives of people with dementia through her many contributions to the Alzheimer Society and the healthcare system: Dr. Kirk has conducted numerous presentations to help increase public awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, healthy brain presentations and ways to lower your risk of dementia. He has served as the medical advisor to the Alzheimer Society and acts as a media spokesperson for research and medical-related topics. Dr. Kirk acts as an ambassador of the First Link® program, referring his patients to the Society for information and support, and informing other medical doctors and health care professionals about the benefits of referring their patients to the Society. By presenting the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medals to Dr. Basran and Dr. Kirk, we are showing our appreciation for their contributions to Alzheimer Society, to the medical community and to Saskatchewan residents who are affected by dementia. On November 27, the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan CEO, Joanne Bracken and the Honourable Dustin Duncan, Minister of Health, presented Dr. Basran & Dr. Kirk with their medals at an Alzheimer Awareness Reception at the Saskatchewan Legislature.
