Prohibition vs. Bootleggers
How are the effects/consequences of the
18th
amendment, which prohibited the sale of alcohol, different from the 19th amendment,
which allowed women the right to vote?
Prohibition
Banning the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol
18th Amendment
Protestant reformers often saw liquor as the cause of poverty
and crime
Many women’s organizations championed an end to selling
alcohol, believing this would protect families, women and
children from the effects of alcohol abuse
By 1919 reformers had created sufficient pressure that enough
states ratified the 18th amendment, launching the era known as
Prohibition
- The manufacture, sale and transportation of alcoholic
beverages was illegal.
Bootleggers
Dry = Prohibit sell of alcohol
Wet = Allow for selling of
alcohol
The people who illegally made, imported, or sold alcohol during
prohibition
Many Americans believed Prohibition wrongly tried to force one
group’s moral beliefs on others. Others opposed Prohibition
because the closing of bars, breweries, and distilleries put
thousands of people out of work. Also, the social impact of
prohibition was minimal. Disease and some social problems were
reduced, but society was not improved overall. In addition,
Prohibition led to a growth in lawlessness and the rise of
organized crime, which supplied illegal alcohol to willing
consumers
Huge Profits could be made bootlegging alcohol. Organized
crime became big business, and gangsters used their money to
corrupt local politicians. Al Capone, one of the most successful
and notoriously well-known gangsters of the era, had many police
officers, judges, and other officials on his payroll.
Speakeasies – Secret, underground drinking establishments
21st Amendment- fewer than 14 years after the ban of alcohol, it
was repealed by the 21st amendment. This demonstrated that it
was unpopular laws are sometimes unenforceable.
