entire essay should
address the topic.
It’s better to use
words other than
those included
in the topic to show
that you really
understand what
the essay is about.
Notice that the
introduction contains
an explanation of these
ideas - it doesn’t just state
each point without adding
some detail.

‘E’ for ‘Explanation’ and ‘Evidence’:
The two ‘E’s are mixed in together so that your ideas
can be expressed in a logical manner.
You need to make sure that you have evidence in the
form of quotes to support the points you make.
Notice that the quotes
aren’t just dropped in
on their own? They
form part of your explanation.
The ‘Linking Sentence’ is the point at which
you clearly relate your idea back to the topic.
It’s also a good idea to link one idea to the
next (explain how the main idea of one paragraph
relates to the main idea of the next paragraph.
You can link over more than one sentence.
Topic Sentence 2: Again, clearly expressed, same idea
as in the introduction but with different words.
