Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As warmer weather approaches, we have so many things
to look forward to as we finish out the 2016-17 school
year. It is unbelievable that we are entering into the
fourth nine weeks. Our staff and students continue to
work extremely hard and I am so proud of the Monticello
High School community!
I want to make sure I express how important it is to keep
working hard until the end of the school year. Spring
Break is a nice time to catch our breath, enjoy trips, time
with family and friends, and re-focus for the rest of the
year. When we return, we still have nine weeks left and I
want us to give all that we have to finish the 2016-17
school year strong.
You all can help us out by continuing to monitor your
child’s grades and attendance. Please stay in touch with
teachers and school counselors, as we finish the year out.
Here are some important dates to keep in mind for the next

Drama students visit NMAAHC
Forty students attended the National Museum of AfricaAmerican History and Culture. The Monticello Drama
program focuses on diversity and engaged citizenship.
Students regard history as an important part of education
and the arts as a way to educate and to enlighten. Trips
like this will result in discussion, scene development and
possibly a student written one act play.

Monticello Drama
Library News
Congratulations to librarian Michelle Kessler and family
on the addition of a new baby boy. Little Max was born in
January.
We also wish happy trails to long time library assistant
Gina Habermeyer, who retired from service in January.
Busy times in the library! Families, please make sure all
library books are returned to us; if you have any lying
around the house, have your little Mustang just drop them
off.
Mustang Band Earns Superior
Ratings
The drama classes are working on “Stories from a
Lunchbox” for Thursday, April 20. This production is a
series of original scenes, poetry and music from
Monticello drama students. After school, we are
rehearsing daily to bring the hip-hop musical In the
Heights to life May 11-14. Yes, before there was
Hamilton, there was Lin Manuel Miranda’s story of life in
the Latino neighborhood of Manhattan’s Washington
Heights. As we rehearse this show, the actors are being
tutored in Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation by the
native Spanish speakers in our cast. This show is a tribute
to our Latino community that brings so much joy and
energy to our school.
The Monticello Mustang Symphonic Band performed at
the District 13 Concert Assessment on Friday March 3rd.
The band, under the direction of Duane Coston, earned 4
superior ratings as well as “A’s” in all captions. The
Mustang Band performed “The Great Escape March”,
“Havendance”, and “A Zilliion Nickels”. By virtue of this
significant achievement, the Mustang Band will be
recognized as a Virginia Honor Band for the 3rd
consecutive year. Only a small percentage of high school
bands in the Commonwealth earn this distinguished
award. Congratulations MHS Band and Go Mustangs!
