TEEN--O-VATORS Roundtable
The Teen Standing Committee is being transitioned
into the Teen-O-Vators
Roundtable.
The
roundtable will welcome
anyone on staff interested
in discussing and sharing
ideas and information
about teen programming
and services at IndyPL.
Opportunities for continuing
education in teen services
will also be made a part of
the roundtables! Whether
you work directly with teens
at your branch or are interested in learning more
about teen services, everyone is welcome to join the
Teen-O-Vators Roundtable!
We want to work together
to make teen services at
IndyPL exceptional and
continue the work that
IndyPL has been doing to
make our locations an inviting and useful resource for
teens!
Rountable dates and times
to be determined.
All American Boys Author Visit
Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, authors of All
American Boys will be
visiting IndyPL and local
schools on April 10 & 11,
2016. All American Boys
is a 2017 Coretta Scott
King
Honor
Book
about two teens (one
black, one white) strug-
gling to deal with the repercussions of a single
violent act that leaves
their school, their community, and, ultimately, the
country bitterly divided by
racial tension. The book
follows sixteen-year-old
Rashad who is mistakenly
accused of stealing and
classmate Quinn who
witnesses his brutal beating at the hands of a police officer who happens
to be the older brother of
his best friend. Told
through Rashad and
Quinn's alternating viewpoints.

Congressman Carson’s 2017
Youth Opportunities Fair
IndyPL will once again be
partnering with Congressman André Carson’s office,
the Marion County Commission on Youth, EmployIndy, and JAG Indiana to
offer Congressman Carson’s Youth Opportunities
Fair! The fair will connect
youth and families with
nonprofit organizations and
private employers offering
internships, volunteer opportunities, and paid jobs
for teens as well as youth
development programming
for all ages during the summer and year-round. The
event is set up like a job or
college fair, with vendor
tables in Central Library’s
atrium area. Participants
will be able to come and go
throughout the event, connecting with vendors individually at their own pace.
A new addition to this
year’s fair will be to include
opportunities for teens to
learn about resume building, IndyPL e-resources and
important library skills,
work etiquette, mock interviewing as well as help
submitting online applica-
tions and information
about work permits. Also
new this year is extending
the timeframe to include
an in-school component for
high school JAG students
who will be transported by
their respective schools
between 12noon and 3PM.
Youth of all ages are welcome to attend the fair and
learn about the many opportunities available to
them in Indianapolis and
Marion County. Congressman Carson’s Youth Opportunities Fair supports efforts by the City of Indianapolis to increase youth
employment opportunities
for teens.

Surveys are being distributed to teens at Central Library to gain input into the design of the new
Central teen space on the east end of Central’s 3rd floor in to be located on 3 East, the east ind
of Central’s 3rd floor. Teens are some of our most active and savvy users. It is important to give
them a say in shaping the programming and services available for them at the Library. (see action numbers 2-14 and 2-15 in the IndyPL strategic plan) For more info contact Michelle Sharp

IndyPL Receives 2017 ALA Great Stories Club Grant
For the second year,
IndyPL has been chosen as
one of the hosts of the American Library Associations
Great Stories Club.
“The Great Stories Club
(GSC) gives underserved
youth facing significant challenges the opportunity to
read, reflect, and share ideas
on topics that resonate with
them. “
The GSC has reached 700
libraries in 49 states and
more than 30,000 young
adults (ages 13 to 21) since
2006.
IndyPL is partnering with the
Indianapolis Public School
Reclaiming Our Opportunity
To Succeed (ROOTS) program.
Teens will be reading Jay
Asher’s Thirteen Reasons
Why, Ned Vizzini’s It’s Kind of
a Funny Story and Matt Weigle’s Romeo and Juliet (No
Fear Shakespeare Graphic
Novel) version of Shakespeare’s classic tale.
The spring theme for the
GSC is Structures of Suffering: Origins of Teen Violence
and Suicide. In addition to
having the GSC with the IPS
ROOTS teens, IndyPL will be
expanding the club to a
group of teens from Pike
High School led by Erin Webster Weir and will meet both
at the school and Pike
Branch Library.
IndyPL first received the GSC
grant in 2016 when the
theme was “The Art of
Change”. IndyPL, through the
grant, was able to bring Nate
Powell, illustrator of John
Lewis’ MARCH graphic novel
to speak to 90 GSC members and local teens in November of 2016.
2017 Great Stories Club Reads
Thirteen Reasons Why
By Jay Asher
It’s Kind of a Funny Story
By Ned Vizzini
Clay Jensen returns home
from school to find a strange
package with his name on it
lying on his porch. Inside he
discovers several cassette
tapes recorded by Hannah
Baker--his classmate and
crush--who committed suicide
two weeks earlier. Hannah's
voice tells him that there are
thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is
one of them. If he listens, he'll
find out why.
Ambitious New York City teenager Craig Gilner is determined to succeed at life which means getting into the
right high school to get into
the right job. But once Craig
aces his way into Manhattan's
Executive Pre-Professional
High School, the pressure
becomes unbearable. He
stops eating and sleeping
until, one night, he nearly kills
himself.
Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah
as his guide. He becomes a
firsthand witness to Hannah's
pain, and as he follows Hannah's recorded words throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever."
Craig's suicidal episode gets
him checked into a mental
hospital, where his new neighbors include a transsexual sex
addict, a girl who has scarred
her own face with scissors,
and the self-elected President
Armelio. There, Craig is finally
able to confront the sources
of his anxiety.

By John Lewis

Jr., the birth of the Nashville
Student Movement, and their

Michelle Sharp: Teen Librarian at Central
Michelle started
her
career with
IndyPL when she
was 15 years old
at Shelby Branch,
now Garfield Park
Branch, waaaaaay back in 1991.
Life happened. Then after graduating with her MLIS from the
University of Illinois she started
working at the Southport Branch
in January 2014 as a PSL. She
quickly joined forces with the
Teen Services Committee. During
her time at Southport she worked
with Volunteer Resources to
create forms and documents to
enable the startup of a teen
advisory board volunteer opportunity. After almost 3 years at
Southport, Michelle joined Central’s Learning Curve as teen
Librarian and Page Supervisor.
Now Michelle spends time managing pages and dreaming up
new ways to reach teens at
Central while managing the teen
collection. Her current teen
project involves surveying teens
to find out their vision for the
teen space at the library.
Michelle is currently serving on
the Young Adult Library Services
Association (YALSA) Teen Read
Week
Committee, the Indy PL Program
and Scholarship Committee, and
the Indy PL Reader’s Advisory
Committee. Likes: tacos, reading,
binge watching TV shows, cooking, social media. Dislikes: onions,
cold weather, short days.
