Why did you choose to come to Switzerland? /Why did you choose Università
della Svizzera italiana?
Actually few of my friends recommented Lugano for me and I was very interested get to know Switzerland
better. In the other hand I like to do skiing and hiking and I was already familiar with that Lugano provide
unique environment to do those things. And it did for sure.
What did you learn about Switzerland?
I have learned lot of during my trip to Switzerland which started about three months ago. Swiss people are
polite and they try to help you with your problems, if they just can. Of course sometimes it’s a pit hard to
find common language here with people, so that’s why I recommend to learn some Italian language before
coming here. Otherwise this is a perfect place for those who appreciate beautiful nature, chocolate and
good cheese.
Brief description of Lugano campus and learning experiences: Preparative
Intensive Italian Language Course / Courses offered at Università della
Svizzera italiana / Methods of teaching
Campus area of Universita della svizzera italiana offers very good place to study by yourself or in group.
Area isn’t too big and it’s very easy to get familiar with it.
I didn’t take intensive Italian language course. Maybe it was mistake, at least what I have heard from other
exchange students.
University offers lot of courses during all semesters. Unfortunately the courses I wanted participate in was
offered last semester, so I couldn’t find courses I really wanted for this semester, but now I have done
courses from field of finance and management which are new fields for me. Anyway it has been fun to
study something totally different as in Finland. Methods of teaching are pretty much same than my home
university: Assigments, group works and exams. At least I have found that it’s good way to learn.
Free time activities: What activities do you suggest in Lugano? Did you apply
to some activities organized by the sport service
Sport service organize so much that you have always something interesting to do. I playing basketball and
floorball every week and I have to advertise that it’s free of charge to join these happenings. In april I took
part of surfing trip to Sardinia. I was absolutely beginner when I went there to learn how to do find surfing.
Finally I could stand on the board and do surfing on beautiful ocean of Sardinia. I really recommend this trip
for everybody.
Social activities: Relationship with other USI students / Relationship with
other exchange students
Meeting people here in Lugano is very easy, so don’t be afraid of being alone. Actually Lugano is pretty
small town, so be aware that you going to meet same people very often, but good thing is that what ever
you going to do you can find always at least one person you already know.
I live in the USI home, so meeting people is kind easy. We are about 30 people and the residence is pretty
good, near the university.
Accommodation in Lugano / USI Home
I’ve been living in USI home for 3 months now and still 2 months left staying here. It is a good decision for
living in Lugano, for sure the cheapest one and it’s very good conserved. The residence is like 3 minutes
walking from University and it’s situated very nearby stores, services and central of Lugano as well.
What would you say / suggest to a person who is thinking about coming to
Lugano as an exchange student?
You have to think about very careful what kind of place you really want to go and what you want to do in
your destination. Lugano is quiet city which offers every basic services and activities. And of course Lugano
be located nearby Milano (50 minutes by train). I have really enjoyed for my time here and right now I
couldn’t even think about any better place to do my Erasmus year.
