Lesson Plan I.
Unit of Study: ColonialAmerica
-
Standard: 4 3: The student willdemonstrate an understanding of the
conflict between the Americancoloniesand England.
Indicator: 4 - 2.1: Summarize the politicaland economicfactors leadingto
the AmericanRevolution,includingthe French and Indian war, British
colonialpolicies includingthe Stamp Act, Tea Act, and Intolerable Acts; and
the Americancolonists' early resistance through various acts, including
boycotts and petitions.
Objective of the Lesson: The students will be able to identify and
understand how the colonist felt being ruled by England and why they
wanted to pull away from England and rule over their own colony.
list of Materials:
A large bag of skittles
Crownfor the King
Posters with the name of each colonyand one for England
Activity :
1. Choose one student to be the Kingof England(The kingshould be
chosen prior to the lesson and have lawsall ready written prior to the
lesson.). then divide the other students up into England,and the
different colonies.
2. Giveeach student (except) for the Kingof Englandan equal amount of
skittles.

3. Each colonyand Englandwill sit in a group under the nameof their
colony.
4. The Kingof Englandwouldmake up a rule or lawof his or her choice
and the students who break this rule must give up the number of
skittles the Kingof Englandasks for. (The rules can consist of things

like whoever is wearingjeans today has to pay me 2 skittles or if you
have brown eyes you have to pay me 3 skittles etc.)
5.. The people wholive in Englandare the onlyones allowedto speak to
the Kingof Englandand negotiate the amount of skittles they have to
pay. If you live in Englandinstead of paying3 skittles you can talk to
the Kingand onlypay 1 or 2 but if you live in the other coloniesyou
can't speak to the Kingor negotiate to pay a smaller amount of
skittles.
6. After the Kingof Englandhave taken most or all of the skittles from
the other colonist while Englandstill has the majority of skittles left
have the students to discuss in their groups howthey feel about what
just happened.
7. Have each group to share with the class their feelings and whythey
feel this way.
8. Ask the students what was fair about the activity as wellas what was
unfair about the activity.
9. Discuss with the students what they woulddo to change this activity
to make it fair for everyone and whywouldthey make the changes
they made.
10.Discuss with the students howthis activity relates to the treatment
of the colonistby England.

11.After the activity the students are allowedto eat the skittles and
other skittles are provided for the students who lost most or all of
their skittles.
Assessment: Havethe students write a journal entry from the colonist,
England,or the Kingof England'spoint of view. They must choose the
colonyin whichthey represented in this activity. They are to write about
feelings they have and whythey feel the waythey do towards England
whether it's for Englandor against England.
