At this time of year, as we face a final stretch of winter, we’ve timed the return
of our most popular British mystery series on WGBX 44 to give us a virtual
escape to the English countryside, and the charming villages of Midsomer.
If you’re not yet among the devoted fans of Detective Chief Inspector Tom
Barnaby and Midsomer Murders, this might be the time to tune in. “These are
such cozy mysteries, you could call this comfort TV,” says WGBH Senior Director
of Progamming Ron Bachman.
“It’s an idyllic setting, with a
likable detective, interesting
guest stars, well written stories
– and an outrageous number of
quirky murders.”
The new season of the
classic British mystery series
begins March 13, with actor
John Nettles returning as the
pleasant and well mannered
DCI Barnaby. Describing his
character, Nettles says
Barnaby’s enduring popularity
stems from his ordinariness.
“He is the epitome of an English
gentleman – reserved and professional, the center of calm in the midst of mayhem. That’s the name of the
game, that’s the appeal: horrible murders and a corny policeman.”
Of course, if you prefer a grittier detective, you’ll also want to tune in
March 13 for the return – and the finale - of another favorite series, DCI
Banks, which concludes with its fifth season. But there’s more new mystery in
the schedule on Channel 44 in April and May, including returning favorites
Doctor Blake and Father Brown. “We’re fortunate to be in something of a golden
age of drama, with more programs available for us to include among our
offerings, so we’re able to select those that will appeal most to our viewers,”
says Ron. “We get a lot of feedback from audience members, and we take that
into account when making our selections,” he says.
Whether it’s weighing in on a good mystery, responding to our news
programs, or engaging with our educational children’s productions, your feedback is an essential part of what makes us public media. You are partners with
us, and your involvement makes a difference in what we do. We are grateful
for your generous support, which makes all of it possible.

The Odd Squad is an agency whose mission is to
come to the rescue whenever something weird
happens. The agents work together and use
math concepts such as probability, estimation,
time and degrees to save the day! In three new
episodes starting March 20, they get to the
bottom of a problem with a strange reflection, welcome new personnel to the team, and use kitchen gadgets in imaginative ways to solve
a riddle. The Odds get even with unusual situations!

Follow the real-life trials and tribulations of the famous Brontë sisters.
All unmarried, Charlotte, Emily and
Anne face a bleak future. Unable to
rely on their alcoholic brother and

governesses for privileged and

have to say as they turn 65 and recount heartaches and triumphs and

Votes for Women
In August 1920, all eyes were
on Tennessee to ratify the
proposed amendment that
would give women the
Constitutional right to vote. At
the last minute, 24-year-old
state legislator Harry Burn cast
the deciding ballot after recalling a letter from his mother
urging him to “be a good boy” and side with the suffragists. Watch how the
passage of the 19th Amendment became one of the most hotly contested,
controversial and colorful political battles in U.S. history.

Indivisible Analyzes Trump
Administration’s First 100 Days
Eric in the Evening
In an effort to present local listeners with voices from across the country,
89.7 WGBH recently began featuring a new national call-in show called
Indivisible, which looks at the first 100 days of the Trump administration.
The show rotates hosts and topics each night, bringing listeners across every
divide together to weigh in and participate in lively, candid and inclusive
conversations.
“We’ve provided our listeners with thoughtful, in-depth coverage
throughout the presidential campaign, and that commitment will continue,”
said Phil Redo, WGBH general manager for radio. “This new show allows us to
bring together voices
and opinions from all
over the country at a
time when we need to
hear them the most.”
The first few
weeks of the show
featured conversations
about President
Trump’s controversial
travel ban, the proliferation of fake news,
the White House’s relationship with the press, and a debate on the value of
protests. Listeners called in from a variety of states and shared diverse and
often passionate opinions on the each night’s topic.

Indivisible is hosted by WNYC’s Peabody Award-winning public affairs

emember watching those classic Warner Bros. cartoons on television
every Saturday morning? What made those shows so memorable was the
way they incorporated masterpieces of classical music, often making it a central part of the story. Once a year, WCRB revives the spirit of that childhood
cartoon experience with its Classical Cartoon Festival, a day-long event
where kids of all ages can enjoy their favorite Warner Bros. cartoons set to
classical music on a giant screen.
In its 18th year, Cartoon Fest takes place on Saturday, March 25 at
Boston’s Symphony Hall. The casual atmosphere offers a perfect opportunity
for you and your family to meet the talented team of people from WCRB. So
be sure to come by and say hello!
Although animation fans love it,
Cartoon Fest is much more than a day
of watching cartoons. As part of the
celebration, WCRB invites groups of
young artists from all over the area to
set up around Symphony Hall and
perform so that attendees can enjoy
a wide variety of experiences. This
gives children who come to Cartoon Fest a chance to see and hear music up
close, in a relaxed way that opens up new possibilities. Plus, you’ll be pleased
to hear that WCRB is bringing back the Instrument Petting Zoo, a novel idea
that gives children a chance to sample different musical instruments.
Cartoon Fest is an important part of what WCRB does every day to
attract more people to the wonderful world of classical music. There is no
age limit, so bring that special little someone to Symphony Hall, and watch
the excitement!
On your way to Symphony Hall, don’t forget to tune your radio to 99.5.
Enjoy our live Boston Symphony Broadcasts (Saturday at 8pm) and our highly
acclaimed WCRB In Concert (Sunday at 7pm). Find more complete information on ClassicalWCRB.org.
That’s all folks! Have a great month watching some musical cartoons and
listening to WCRB!

Pluto: Inside the Mind of Alzheimer’s.”
In 2009, at age 59, O’Brien was
diagnosed with early-onset
Alzheimer’s disease. The Cape Cod
resident and journalist said the disease is prominent in his family.
“As a journalist who lost his
maternal grandfather, mother, and
paternal uncle to Alzheimer’s,” O’Brien
said, “and whose father was diagnosed with dementia before his passing,
I’m compelled to write from inside the mind of Alzheimer’s, to write as an
embedded reporter now that the disease has come for me. Shame on me, in
my journey, if I don’t. This disease is targeting countless millions across the
globe. As someone far smarter than me said, we need to find the switch and
turn it off!”

The podcast will highlight the friendship Shenk and O’Brien share, while
also documenting O’Brien’s experience with the disease as its symptoms
become more pronounced. Both O’Brien and Shenk have strong followings
within the Alzheimer’s community. O’Brien is regularly featured on NPR’s
Weekend Edition.
“My hope is to encourage others to fight this disease in faith, hope and
humor, to offer day-to-day strategies for living with Alzheimer’s,” he said.
“The dying part comes later, as it does with all of us. As the great ancient
Chinese General Sun Tzu, assumed author of “The Art of War,” once counseled,
‘Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.’”
The podcast is produced by WCAI News Director Sean Corcoran.
“We’re very proud of this podcast, mostly because we think it will be
really helpful to both people suffering from dementia, including early-onset
Alzheimer’s disease, and their families and caregivers,” Corcoran said. “Greg
brings incredible honesty, while David, with his background in the science
behind the disease, is an excellent co-host.”
In addition to discussing Greg’s day-to-day life with Alzheimer’s and the
tactics he uses to deal with the disease, the podcast also features guest
interviews. Early episodes include Harvard researcher Dr. Rudy Tanzi, and Kim
Campbell, wife of country musician Glen Campbell, who is in the later stages
of the disease.
“Sometimes it helps to know you’re not alone,” Corcoran said. “And when
it comes to Alzheimer’s, more and more families are trying to find their way.”
