Character Education Through Cornerstone Values Character is who we are when no-one sees. Character Education ● ● Character Education is developing values; good habits and dispositions that lead students to responsible and mature adulthood. Character Education is not a quick fix, short term phase. ● ● For it to be successful it must become an integral part of the school life. Our school must become a community where these values are constantly practiced – classroom, playground, staffroom... everywhere. The Character Wheel The Wheel Duty - a willingness to do what is right, an obligation Respect - a willingness to treat with courtesy, to hold in high regard, to honour, to care about yourself and others Responsibility - a willingness to be answerable, to be trustworthy, to be accountable for your own actions and behaviour Compassion - a willingness to help or empathise with Consideration - a willingness to be kind, be thoughtful and consider the interests of others before self. Kindness - a willingness to help, show concern for and be friendly to others. Obedience - a willingness to obey rightful authority. Honesty - a willingness not to steal, cheat, lie or be unfair. An Analogy The Head The Heart The Hand The Head, Heart & Hand ● ● ● These three parts of a cornerstone value knowledge, desire and behaviour Character can also be defined as knowing the good, desiring the good and doing the good. It is about the habits of the head, the habits of the heart and the habits of the hand. The Implementation ● ● ● A character wheel will be displayed in every classroom all year round. One spoke of the wheel will be taught, discussed, implemented each term. We will start with the hub of duty. This is a two year cycle = 3 cycles in a learners time at Cambridge East. ● ● ● ● Community information evenings Certificates to recognise character at our assemblies. Character slips recognising what learners have been observed doing. Communication via newsletters, assemblies, our website, facebook, home learning and learning celebrations.
