EASTCHESTER UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT Summer Reading Program May 29, 2015 Dear Parent/Guardian, I hope this letter finds you well. As we enter the final stretch of the school year, I wanted to share with you the District’s revised summer reading list. Summer is a wonderful time for children to pursue interests that extend beyond those in our schools and to relax with family and friends. Summer is also an opportunity to enjoy a good book! Encouraging your child to read throughout the summer can be invaluable to his or her academic growth. Research has demonstrated that students tend to regress academically over the summer months (White, 1906; Heyns, 1978; Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al, 2004, Alexander et al, 2007, Von Hippel et al, 2007), often referred to as the “summer slide.” Fortunately, summer reading is a fun and appropriate way to keep your child engaged in learning! Please take advantage of the attached list to promote reading with your child this summer. We have partnered with Eastchester’s Public Library to ensure they are carrying many of the books that appear on our summer reading list. In addition, we are sponsoring a “Summer Reading Challenge” for the child who reads the greatest number of pages on each grade level (in each school). While visiting Eastchester (or Tuckahoe) Public Library this summer, be sure to ask a librarian to sign and place a sticker or stamp on your child’s reading log to earn 100 additional bonus pages. More information on the “Summer Reading Challenge” can be found on page 17 of this packet. Also, Senator Latimer invites your child to take part in the New York State Senate Summer Reading Program. If you are interested in learning more about this program please review the last page of this packet for additional details. In closing, I hope you encourage your child to read as much as possible this summer. I also hope you take the opportunity to visit museums, zoos, aquariums, and historical sites with your children-these experiences provide your children with authentic, first-hand learning. Interestingly, when asked for extended written responses for class assignments and assessments, children naturally draw on these experiences. Be sure to follow me on Twitter (@ronhattar) for summer reading updates throughout the summer! Sincerely, Ron Hattar EASTCHESTER UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT Summer Reading Program Choosing a “Just Right” Book Below are some questions to consider when selecting a “just right” book: Are you interested in the topic? Do you like the illustrations? Can you read or figure out almost all the words? Use the Five Finger Rule--as you read, count on one hand any unknown words. If you counted 5 words you didn’t know on a page, this book is too hard for you right now and you should try another book. Can you understand what you are reading? Are you reading the text smoothly without stopping to sound out unfamiliar words? 1|Page EASTCHESTER UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT Summer Reading Program Eastchester UFSD Summer Reading Program Students Entering Grade 1 Picture Books (any books written by the authors below) Verna Aardema Eric Carle Kevin Henkes Helen Lester Bernard Mos Dr. Seuss Aliki Doreen Cronin Ezra Jack Keats Leo Lionni Beatrix Potter William Steig Tedd Arnold Tomie dePaola Stephen Kellogg Robert McCloskey H.
