CEO’s Message
The saying “April showers bring May flowers”
stimulates immediate images of spring and our
gorgeous California weather. It is a time of
rebirth and growth for everything around us.
Taking the garden metaphor and applying it to
the human spirit, I think of all of the
blossoming that is happening here at Mercy
McMahon Terrace. Our many new residents are
bringing excitement and new personalities to
our extended family. Each resident contributes
a unique approach to the shared perspective of
getting older. I am so inspired that the
prevailing attitude from most of you is that
living here is an exciting new chapter rather
than an overwhelming change. Although
change can be difficult, it is much like good
gardening: with patience, love, dedication and
commitment, beautiful things start popping up
all over. Embrace the new growth that
surrounds us inside and out. Enjoy the beauty
of the blue skies, the brightly colored flowers,
and the smiles of those who fill Mercy
McMahon Terrace with love.

Happy Easter!
It’s a time of rebirth and
renewal. Whether you’re
celebrating the arrival of
spring, bunnies bearing eggs
or the religious significance
of Easter, our staff wishes all
of you a wonderful holiday.
Optimism
The definition
of optimism:
“hopefulness and
confidence about
the future or the
successful
outcome of
something.”
“Father, we
thank You that
You want to give
us good things.
Help us to be
positive, knowing
our hope is in
You! Amen.”
Also, consider
the benefits of
optimism,
keeping in mind
this saying:
’Twixt optimist
and pessimist
The difference is
droll...
The optimist sees
the doughnut,
The pessimist the
hole.”
Flourish of Flowers
Whether it’s tulips, daffodils or
azaleas, each spring from coast to
coast, folks celebrate the flowers of
spring. Here, we are happy to have
a new cutting flower garden. Our
local Boy Scout troop led by
Gabriel, who is earning his Eagle
status, and Arnold, who did all the
cutting of the boards, helped build
our wooden raised bed.
Mary, a willing gardener in the
local neighborhood has been
working diligently to plant and
tend the garden. If you haven’t seen
it, take a look. It is just beautiful.
You and Your Family Are
Invited to Our Easter
Buffet on April 16th!
Protecting the
Environment
The overwhelming public
support for the first Earth
Day in 1970 led to the
creation of the
Environmental Protection
Agency. Earth Day is
celebrated on April 22.

Grandparents
Ties between grandparents
and grandchildren are priceless.
Think of all the special things
you did with your
grandparents. There were
overnight visits and meals that
featured your favorite foods.
Your grandmother may have
taught you how to knit or your
grandfather how to bait a hook.
Maybe you went with them to
the garden or to the theatre in
the city. Whatever you did
together, it was exceptional.
We Acknowledge That You
Are the Tie That Binds the
Generations Together.
Anita with her newest
great-granddaughter
May discusses the
meaning of a story.
Times change, but the bonds
between the generations do not.
Your grandchildren think back as
fondly on your time together as
you do. They remember baking
cookies, having a special place to
sleep and the places you visit
together.
You can be an
“adopted”
grandparent by
reading stories
together.

Spiritual
Corner
The Risen Christ
(Jn. 20: 19-31)
The first is the
last is the One who
lives.
He passes
through locked
doors.
Forgiveness is the
breath he breathes.
His flesh is open
sores.
He bids us touch
the memory
We couldn’t stay
to make:
The severed side
The punctured
palmsHe lets us now
partake.
Redemption
leaves a set of
wounds
My Lord and
God extends.
We cannot
capture
Yet receive the
spirit that he sends.
-Rita A.
Simmonds
Let us allow God to surprise
us. He never tires of casting open
the doors of His heart and of
repeating that He loves us. The
Church knows that her primary
task, especially at a moment full
of great hopes and signs of
contradiction, is to introduce
everyone to the great mystery of
God’s mercy by contemplating
the face of Christ.
The Church is called above all
to be a credible witness to mercy,
professing and living it as the
core of the revelation of Jesus.
From the heart of the Trinity,
from the depths of the mystery
of God, the great river of mercy
wells up and overflows
unceasingly. It is a spring that
will never run dry.
Every time someone is in
need, he or she can approach it,
because the mercy of God never
ends. The profundity of the
mystery surrounding it is as
inexhaustible as the richness
that springs up from it.
May the Church echo the
Word of God that resounds
strong and clear as a message
and a sign of pardon, strength,
aid and love. May she never tire
of extending mercy, and be ever
patient in offering compassion
and comfort.
May the Church Repeat
Confidently Without End: Be
mindful of Your mercy, O Lord,
and Your steadfast love. -Pope
Francis Misericordiae Vultus 25
”Be mindful of Your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they
have been from of old.” (Ps. 25:6)

East Sac Inheritance
There was always a “we” in
childhood:
We walked to McKinley Park
unless it was dark, we swam in
Clunie Pool until we wrinkled,
then crossed the street to
Solander’s for a dime’s worth of
brown bagged popcorn. We got
our first ID, our library card. Boy,
we thought we were smart.
We took the bus downtown,
age eleven, roamed Weinstock’s,
Hales, Penny’s even. Had Blum’s
crumb cake after Jeff Chandler’s
latest movie at the Crest (we
thought him the greatest) and
topped it off with egg salad and
milkshakes at Countrymaid
across from the cathedral steps,
never thinking independence was
a lesson.

To All Our
Residents
Celebrating
This Month
Happy Birthday!
God gave a gift
to the world when
you were born: a
person who loves
and cares, who
sees a person’s
need and fills it,
who encourages
and lifts people
up, who spends
energy on others
rather than
yourself, who
touches each life
you enter and
makes a
difference in the
world. May the
love you have
shown to others
return to you
multiplied. And
may you have the
happiest birthday
ever!

Give Me Five!
A Paws-itive
Influence
If you’ve ever
had a pet, you
know the special
kind of joy they
bring to your life.
Interacting with
animals can
improve your
health and
longevity. Studies
prove both the
psychological and
physiological
benefits of pet
therapy.
Thanks to
Claire who brings
Gracie, a friendly
King Charles
spaniel, to visit
regularly. Now we
have Sharon who
owns Betty, a
golden Labrador
retriever, who
visits us, too.
It all started in 1977 when
Glenn Burke, LA Dodgers player,
held up his hand for Dusty
Baker, who hit a home run. Both
men slapped palms. Burke, the
very next at-bat, also hit a home
run. So, Dusty greeted him with
a congratulatory hand slap. The
“high-five” has been popular
ever since.
Happy Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a holiday set
aside to honor and celebrate
mothers, grandmothers and
mothers-to-be.
Shower the special women in
your life with love, hugs and
maybe a card or a beautiful
bouquet!
From all of us at Mercy
McMahon Terrace, we wish all
the moms who call our
community home a very Happy
Mother’s Day!
We Invite Family and
Friends to Join Us for Our
Mother’s Day Buffet on
May 14th.
Smile and the World Smiles With You
“Nothing you wear is more important than
your smile.”
~ Connie Stevens
Smiling is not just a universal means of communicating, it’s also a
frequent one. More than 30% of us smile more than 20 times a day
and less than 14% of us smile less than 5 times a day. In fact, those
with the greatest superpowers are actually children, who smile as many
as 400 times per day!
Mother Teresa said: “I will never understand all the good that a
simple smile can accomplish.”

Bill and Family at Car Show
Let’s Honor Dad
Most dads and granddads are
used to supporting their loved
ones without much fanfare or
applause. On June 18th, however,
our community will raise a cheer
to all the father figures here
during our Father’s Day lunch.
Join our grateful crowd and get
ready to be showered with praise.
They say that the way to a man’s
heart is through his stomach, so
we’re aiming to please with this
hearty and delicious meal. We
encourage family members to
accompany their dads and
granddads to this special event.
Things you don’t hear fathers
say:
• Can you turn up that music?
• Go ahead and take my truck,
and here’s $50 for gas.
• Why do you want to get a
job? I make plenty of money
for you to spend!
• Your mother and I are going
away for the weekend. You
might want to consider
throwing a party.
• Here, you take the remote.
• I think we’re lost. I better
stop and ask for directions.

Hugs for Health
Wrap your arms
around this news:
Studies show that
a 10-second hug
can reduce the
stress chemical
cortisol, increase
the “feel-good”
hormone
oxytocin, and
lower your blood
pressure—
resulting in a
calmer, happier
you.
Reach out and
hug someone
today! It is so
good for both of
you.
