29 April 2012 Fourth Sunday of Easter Tigers and Sheep What dread hand? & what dread feet? The Lamb What the hammer? what the chain, In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? what dread grasp, Dare its deadly terrors clasp! Little Lamb, who made thee? Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Gave thee life, and bid thee feed By the stream and o'er the mead; Gave thee clothing of delight, Softest clothing, woolly, bright; Gave thee such a tender voice, Making all the vales rejoice? Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Little Lamb, I'll tell thee, Little Lamb, I'll tell thee: He is called by thy name, For he calls himself a Lamb. He is meek, and he is mild; He became a little child. I a child, and thou a lamb. We are called by his name. Little Lamb, God bless thee! Little Lamb, God bless thee! _________________________________________ The Tyger Tyger Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night; What immortal hand or eye, Could frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or skies. Burnt the fire of thine eyes? On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand, dare seize the fire? And what shoulder, & what art, Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat, When the stars threw down their spears And water’d heaven with their tears: Did he smile his work to see? Did he who made the Lamb make thee? Tyger Tyger burning bright, In the forests of the night: What immortal hand or eye, Dare frame thy fearful symmetry? William Blake has been described as 'a divine child, whose playthings were sun, moon, and stars, the heavens and the earth'. Yet Blake himself believed that his writings were of national importance and that they were of especial value to the mature and worldly. Today is Good Shepherd Sunday, celebrating Our Lord’s image of himself as the pastor and leader of human kind. But Jesus also uses the image of the Lamb to refer to himself as the redeemer of mankind. Blake’s poem The Lamb is often dismissed as sentimental and infantile. But Blake intended it to be read alongside the companion poem The Tyger. Taken together, the two poems give a perspective on religion that includes the good and clear as well as the terrible and inscrutable. The reference to the lamb in the penultimate stanza of The Tyger reminds the reader that a tiger and a lamb have been created by the same God, and raises questions about the implications of this. It also invites a contrast between the perspectives of ‘experience’ and ‘innocence’. The Tyger consists entirely of unanswered questions, and Blake leaves us to awe at the complexity of creation, the sheer magnitude of God’s power, and the inscrutability of divine will. The perspective of experience in this poem involves a sophisticated acknowledgment of what is unexplainable in the universe, presenting evil as the prime example of something that cannot be denied, but will not withstand facile explanation, either. Christians who live in the complexity of the modern world do EVENTS THIS WEEK SUNDAY 29 April 2012 - Fourth Sunday of Easter 0900 Family Mass - the celebrant and preacher is Fr Alan Gyle 1100 Sung Mass - the celebrant is Fr Stephen Young; preacher Fr Alan Gyle Mass in G minor - Ralph Vaughan Williams My soul, there is a country - Parry O salutaris (Eb) - Edward Elgar THIS WEEK Morning Prayer is said daily at 0900 Low Mass is said daily at 1800 and on Saturday at noon The Wednesday Evening Service is at 1845 NEXT SUNDAY, 6 May 2012 - Fifth Sunday of Easter 0900 Family Mass - the celebrant and preacher is Fr Stephen Young 1100 High Mass - the celebrant is Fr Nick Mercer; preacher Fr Stephen Young MUSIC?
