Lesson Title: Solving Linear Equations
Learning Target: Find the value of x in a linear equation
Success Criteria:

Questions:
#4a
IN: What does it mean to combined like terms?
Give an example.
Know that inverse operations are used to isolate the
variable.
Know that “keeping the balance” is required.
Multi-step Equations:
1. If needed…..remove roadblocks.
- Combine like terms: terms with the same variable can be combined
3x + 5x = 8x
- Clear the parentheses using the distributive property.
a(b + c) = ab + ac
- Move the variable to one side of the equation using inverse operations.
8x + 2 = 4x + 5
-4x
-4x
4x + 2 = 5
2. Follow the steps for solving a 2-step equation.
Examples:
4a – 5 + 2a + 9 = 28
6a + 4= 28
-4 -4
6a = 24
6
6
A=4
4(a – 1) + 3 = 19
4a – 4 + 3 = 19
4a – 1 = 19
+1 +1
4a = 20
4
4
A=5
11a + 9 = 4a + 30
-4a
-4a
7a + 9 = 30
-9 -9
7a = 21
7 7
a=3
