Letter from Fr. Mike Walker
Our Response to Corpus Christi:
This weekend we celebrate Corpus Christi. This is the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. It is
a reminder to us all that the gift that the Lord gave us in his Body and Blood is one meant to be
appreciated and participated in. One of the sad things that I've noticed since arriving here is
that there is a summer disconnect. It's almost as if we are taking summers "off" from the worship of our God. That is sad and it just tells me that I also need to do a better job helping God's
people to see the celebration of the Mass for what it truly is. This is why I am explaining the
Mass this weekend.
If we only fully knew what we were doing and what is offered, we would be breaking down the
doors in anticipation of the great things the Lord was letting us take part in during the Sunday
celebration of the Eucharist. For now, I'm not trying to get a response of guilt, but rather a response of inquisitiveness and anticipation to understand and appreciate the celebration of the
Eucharist. Jesus paid a very high price for us to be able to come to him so fully. Let's do our part
and take him up on his offer!
tan plenamente. Hagamos nuestra parte y aceptemos su oferta

Dear St. James Parish Families,
We have come to the end of the school year, and what a great year it was! We had our Spring
Music Program last week and the children did a wonderful job! Thank you to Mr. Pappelis who always
does a terrific job with the school music program and to Mrs. Hoffarth and Ms. Rogers who worked with
the drama club on their scene from the Music man! We celebrated our final Mass of the year on Friday
and the graduation of our 5th grade class. We are so proud of our 5th grade students, all that they have
learned and how they have grown and matured! We are sad to say goodbye, but excited for all they will
go forward to accomplish!
I want to give a HUGE “THANK YOU!!!” to all of our wonderful volunteers; our little school
wouldn’t survive without you! It is impossible to list everyone, thank you to Patti Stritzke who volunteers her time to teach technology, Sally and David Briedwell who volunteer to teach and keep our library running smoothly, the volunteer steering committee of SIP! McMinnville Wine and Food Classic,
the wonderful Parent Club members who support our school in so many ways, Heidi Albright who coordinates SCRIP, our room parents, the School Advisory Council, the volunteers who run our other fundraising events like the Brews and Barbeque and the Wine Auction, Linda and Len Illias who have given tremendous volunteer hours in religion and PE classes, Renee White and Karen Thwaite who volunteer every week to give phenomenal reading support to our students, Doug Thwaite and the Knights of Columbus
who support us with maintenance projects, the Catholic Daughters… I know there are many, many others, please understand and forgive the inability of my brain at this point in the year to remember everyone. Please just know how grateful we are for all you do for our St. James School community. God bless
you!!!
We are very sad to say goodbye to several individuals who have been an important part of our school
family for many years;
Rebecca Hoffarth has kept our school running smoothly for seven years. She really is irreplaceable and
will be greatly missed. We are hopeful to see her from time-to-time as we know she will miss us as well.
Destiny Thompson has only been with us for a year, but she has done a wonderful job in teaching our
third grade students and guiding their growth and learning. She has a great future in teaching ahead of
her and our thought and prayers go with her.
Fe Reynaga has kept our children well fed and nourished for all the learning and play they participate in
each day. We love you and will miss you. Thankfully we know you live just around the corner and will
continue to be part of our family.
Margaret Rutledge has enriched our school program and children’s learning with the culture and language of Spain and Central America. Gracias, Sra. Rutledge!
Lisa Hartman has lovingly cared for and prepared our four-year-old students for learning and growing as
elementary students. She takes with her our thoughts and prayers for a wonderful next step in her journey. Emily Chadwick has decided to accept a job in Yamhill/Carlton and so we are also sad to see her go.
She will be missed.
We invite you to join us on Tuesday, June 20th to share your own well-wishes to our staff members who
are moving on. Our send-off lunch will be at Mazatlán restaurant from 11:15-1:00.
Thank you for all of your support and well-wishes during my first year here at St. James. We have a wonderful school community and look forward to another great year ahead!
Have a fantastic, fun and restful summer. I will be in the office through the end of June and then back in
August to begin the new year.
Let the vacation begin!!!
In Christ,
Shirley Gray

We have concluded another successful year of Religious education for our children here at St.
James. This year 118 children received the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. What
made this year unique, however, is that five of these children had special needs, and for the first
time at St. James Church, were included in classes specifically tailored for children with disabilities.
Last year I attended a catechetical conference in Los Angeles where I found materials that helped me
to explore and develop ideas to include children with special needs into our parish religious education programs. With the help of the Archdiocesan Office for People with Disabilities, parents of special needs students, and my own experience of having a child with special needs, a successful lesson
plan for preparation for Reconciliation and First Eucharist was developed and used.
There is nothing more pleasing than knowing that we are doing the right thing and preparing those
who otherwise would not be able to partake in receiving these Sacraments. Seeing these children
among others makes us see the whole picture -- as God sees them. If you have experience working
with children with disabilities, if you like children and are patient, or if you would like to learn to
work with young people with disabilities, I invite you to become a part of this ministry. Share your
gifts by helping in this ministry. For more details, call Engracia at 503-472-5232, etc. 234
Thank you. God bless you.
Gracias. Dios te bendiga.
